Editor's Note: Fr. George Rutler, a convert from Anglicanism, was asked by CNA what his reaction is to the Vatican's new Anglican provision. Fr. Rutler's reply follows. It is a dramatic slap-down of liberal Anglicanism and a total repudiation of the ordination of women, homosexual marriage and the general neglect of doctrine in Anglicanism. Indeed, it is a final rejection of Anglicanism. It basically interprets Anglicanism as a spiritual patrimony based on ethnic tradition rather than substantial doctrine and makes clear that it is not a historic "church" but rather an "ecclesial community” that strayed and now is invited to return to communion with the Pope as Successor of Peter. The Vatican was careful to schedule simultaneously with the Vatican announcement, a press conference of the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and the deeply humiliated Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury to enable the Anglicans to save some face by saying that this recognizes the spiritual patrimony of Anglicanism and that ecumenical dialogue goes ahead. That is like George Washington at Yorktown saying that he recognizes the cultural contributions of Britain and hopes diplomatic relations flourish. The Apostolic Constitution is not a retraction of ecumenical desires, but rather is the fulfillment of ecumenical aspirations, albeit not the way most Anglican leaders had envisioned it. The press, uninformed and always tabloid in matters of religion, will zoom in on the permission for married priests. They will miss the most important point: that this reiterates the Catholic Church's insistence that Anglican Holy Orders are invalid, and perforce so is their Eucharist. These married Anglican priests have to be fully and validly ordained by a Catholic bishop. Following Orthodox custom, they are allowed to marry only before ordination and not after. And no married man may become a bishop. (Thus, any Anglican bishop joining one of these "ordinariates" would no longer be recognized as a bishop. Under special provision, Anglican bishops would have some right to pastoral authority, but would not be bishops.) It remains to be seen how many Anglicans (Episcopalians in the USA) will be received into the Catholic Church under these provisions, but it is a final nail in the coffin of the rapidly disintegrating Anglicanism at least in the West and will radically challenge Anglicans in other parts of the world. Perhaps most importantly, it sets a precedent for reunion with Orthodox churches whose Holy Orders the Catholic Church already recognizes as valid. I should not be surprised if the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury eventually is received into the Catholic Church, at least when he retires and gets a patent of nobility and a pension. * Fr. George Rutler is pastor of The Church of Our Saviour in New York City and is a convert to Catholicism from the Anglican Communion. Subscriber comments:

Anyone who thinks that Fr. Rutler's words are "An uncharitable little diatribe", as well as "Crude and, sadly, designed to provoke controversy", obviously do not get it. Protestants committed a heresy and have made themselves in the eyes of Catholics and Orthodox, an obscenity. Those who choose to come back to the Catholic Church have accepted the truth and all will be forgiven.

To refute John Kertis comments. The truth does hurt when presented with facts. So, perhaps, the issue is yours, due to your acceptance of the heresy the liberals within the Catholic Chuch brought to the church in Vatican 2.

I find Rutler's comments base, crude and, sadly, designed to provoke controversy.
Perhaps, Mr. Rutler desires conflict, anger and fear. I believe his words to be harmful to the Church. I expected far more from a site presuming to speak for the Holy Catholic Church. How anyone (let alone a priest)can so disregard the teachings of Christ baffles me. Please exercise more inspection and caution when allowing folk's words to be posted. I think the entire church will benefit. Peace, John

What an uncharitable little diatribe.
Most Anglicans consider themselves to be, first and foremost, Christians. They not only agree that "Anglicanism [is] a spiritual patrimony based on ethnic tradition rather than substantial doctrine," they proclaim it. It says something about Fr. Rutler- a priest- that he sees that characterization as derogatory and yet is clearly eager to use it in public. Like Fr. Rutler, I know a little about Anglican conversion. I was brought up in an Anglican family with conversions to Rome in each generation. From what I know of their stories, for none were the chief obstacles issues of Magisterium or Mary. The Roman teachings on these are actually quite credible. Nor was there umbrance around Rome's opinion of Anglican Orders. They were layman-- those who knew and cared were equally skeptical of both Roman and Anglican claims (Wiki "Rebiba"). Please don't take offense when I confess the truth: the chief obstacles to conversion were the liturgy and the people-- liturgy like "guitar masses" and people like the bitter triumphialists who undermined the Pastoral Provision (also worth a Wiki). Praise God there will be a path around both these stumbling blocks.

I am a devout catholic; I"m not sure this is good for the whole catholic community all over the world. I don"t agree to married priests in the church.

I too am a former Anglican. I understand the theological nature of Fr. Rutler's comments, but wish he would follow St. Paul's lead that all such truth, whether theological or dogmatic or ecclesiastic, is nothing apart from love. I hear no compassion in these words. It's easier to "slap-down" error than to do right. The Pope is doing right, forging reconciliation. He has condemned no one in this Constitution, only offered a grace of communion to separated brothers and sisters. Such active grace will move more hearts than angry words. Christ's lament, "that they may be one," will be forged not in condemnation, but in compassion. Truth, of course. But there is no truth apart from love.

Placing aside the prejudices of the press in their coverage of this wonderful news; I say it is high time we not only seek out other denominations whom have a population that are tired of their clergy, their liberal theology(think relativism)and perverting of Church teaching but also couple this with a purging of the Catholic Church, removing its own relativist rebels. Doing so we'll be well on our way to full Communion with all who are disciples of Christ. Of course the latter will be branded in the press as the Grand Inquisition redeux, but as long as we stay true, does their opinion really matter?

As always, Fr. Rutler's deep compassion for those with whom he disagrees so righteously shines through.
Unlike Fr. Rutler, I am not at all convinced that Jesus is himself convinced that "validity" in His mind determines whether those who piously approach the Sacrament in the Anglican Church receive the Sacrament's graces.

"a...repudiation of the ordination of women, homosexual marriage..." I am cheering loudly for the Pope! Here is someone who is willing to hold the line, benefiting all Christendom. We used to have an Episcopalian family visit us weekly with one son taking a music lesson from my husband. I remember the husband and father of that family weeping and depressed when V. Gene Robinson was made a bishop. Our friend was a fervent, sincere Christian who didn't deserve to be put in that position. I hear he is now converting to Catholicism. Another hurray! We must not lie down for political correctness, no matter how seductive the rhetoric. Thank you, Holy Father!

Thank God for Father Rutler and his ministry. I find his weekly "Christ in the City" on EWTN always excellent, well thought-out and well presented. His comment on the Anglican community is likewise informative.

Father Rutler says, "Following Orthodox custom, they are allowed to marry only before ordination and not after."
Does that mean that Catholic lay men who are part of or raised in the Anglican personal ordinate who marry may be ordained to the priesthood? ADD A COMMENT (Your e-mail will NOT be published):
