Archbishop refuses to attend ceremony honoring pro-abortion politicians

Washington D.C., May 13, 2005 / 12:00 am (CNA).- Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans has refused to attend Loyola University’s commencement ceremony because the institution has chosen to confer honors to two pro-abortion politicians, Sen. Mary Landrieu and her brother, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu. National director of Priests for Life Fr. Frank Pavone commended the archbishop for his courageous decision.

"Archbishop Hughes has bravely stood up to the defiance of Loyola University," said Fr. Pavone.

"Some will counter that we cannot exercise this vigilance on abortion without starting to do so on a host of other moral issues. The fact is that support for abortion violates the foundation of every moral position, not just that regarding the unborn. If you deny a child a right to live, you've already denied his right to work, health care, education, and living in peace," added Fr. Pavone.

What the Archbishop has done by not attending the commencement excercises at Loyola is proclaim that to be a leader is to defend and protect life, from its very beginning to its natural end, life is sacred. This is true for every nation, every country, political party, every human person anywhere.

BRAVO! We need strong shepherds who will provide leadership faithful to Church teachings. Thank you Archbishop Hughes for being a courageous example of a true disciple.

We need more bishops to display this type of courage. Many of us are tired of our schools honoring proabortion politicians.

Archbishop Hughes deserves to be honored by the USCCB for attempting to buy back the faith. It takes courage and true faith to stand up and place values before others. The Vacatican should commend this man of Faith who will not water down what is Catholic.

We are so thrilled to hear of Archbishop Hughes courageous stand against Loyola U. If only the rest of the bishops and cardinals had his intregity and strength of character! This country and church would be far stronger and far holier!
