Bishop reminds Catholics to remember Judgment Day in the voting booth
![]() Bishop Robert Herman
Related articles:
.- Bishop Robert J. Herman, the administrator of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, has written a column reminding Catholics that their vote will be a decision weighed on the Day of Judgment. He urged Catholics not to treat the unborn as the neglectful rich man treated Lazarus in the biblical parable. “Judgment Day is on its way,” the bishop wrote in the St. Louis Review. “We cannot stop it. We don’t know when it will come, but just as surely as the sun rises daily, the Son of Man will come when we least expect.” “For many, this coming election may very well be judgment day, for this election will measure us,” he continued, referencing Christ’s words of judgment in Matthew 10:32-33: “Everyone who acknowledges Me before others, I will acknowledge before My heavenly Father. But whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.” Bishop Herman asked the faithful to consider what kind of witness they give to God when they enter the voting booth on Election Day. “The decision I make in the voting booth will reflect my value system. If I value the good of the economy and my current lifestyle more than I do the right to life itself, then I am in trouble,” the bishop wrote. He cited Pope John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation Christifideles laici, which said outcry on human rights is “false and illusory” if the right to life is not defended to the maximum. “The right of our children to be protected from destruction is greater than my right to a thriving economy,” Bishop Herman continued. “My desire for a good economy cannot justify my voting to remove all current restrictions on abortion. My desire to end the war in Iraq cannot justify my voting to remove all current restrictions on abortion.” Bishop Herman looked to the spiritual dimension as well. “Those 47 million children our nation destroyed are still living. We have destroyed their bodies, but their souls are still alive. When our Lord comes again, they may very well be there to judge us. Even worse, Jesus tells us that whatever we do to the least of our brethren, we do to Him. We would truly shudder if we heard the words, ‘I was in my mother’s womb but you took my life!’ “It is quite possible that we might see these children, but, depending upon the choices we have made, we may very well be separated from them by a great chasm which cannot be crossed, much as the rich man who ignored Lazarus, the poor man, during his lifetime here on earth but was separated from him after death.” Bishop Herman said the “deepest problem” with many Catholics is that they have become accustomed to rationalizing away a “life of sinful actions” headed in the wrong direction. “My goal is not to engage you in some political party way but to engage you with our Savior and His teachings. We need to constantly challenge our accustomed behaviors in the light of the Gospel,” he wrote. He said the issues of the coming election could help people learn about the teachings of the Catholic Church and to use the Sacrament of Reconciliation. “When we do this, both we and the heavens will be filled with joy!” he asserted. “Judgment Day is on its way,” he repeated, encouraging people to pray the family Rosary daily between now and Election Day. In a previous column for the St. Louis Review, Bishop Herman urged Catholics not to put politics ahead of the Fifth commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” “Save our children!” he wrote. “More than anything else, this election is about saving our children or killing our children. This life issue is the overriding issue facing each of us in this coming election. All other issues, including the economy, have to take second place to the issue of life.” Subscriber comments:

Whoa "pro-life"! First of all, let me educate you a little. The Democratic party runs on a platform of bigger government. It is basic element of Obama's party that most people learn in basic government class.
Secondly, we expect out government to tell us that killing people is wrong and don't scoff at them for putting murderers in jail, but you suggest that prohibiting women from killing their babies is "big government telling people what to do." Thats a stretch. Especially when Obama intends to pass the Freedom of Choice Act which would mandate that even Catholic hospitals offer abortions. That is the epitome of big government telling people what to do. Abortion is not a religious issue. It is a human rights issue. We do not refer to murder as a religious issue despite the fact that the Bible is our earliest publication telling people not to kill people. Our country was founded on the rights to "LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Probably ordered that way for a reason. It is sad that religious institutions are some of the only organization defending such an issue when if was one of the basic precepts of America. Protecting the unborn, the unable to defend themselves, the silenced, and the suffering is a human rights issue and no other people fit in those categories more than an unborn, unwanted child. When the Supreme Court passed Roe v. Wade, doctors, scientists, and the like were all in agreement that life begins at conception. We must protect life.

Why is it ok to vote for war, if killing is a crime? Why is the death penalty ok, when hundreds of innocent men have died as a result of man's imperfect judgement? Should those judgements not also be left to God?
Abortion is NOT the only issue that God's people need to pay attention to. Voting for the good of my countrymen is not an evil deed. How many will suffer and die because of a lack of available, affordable health care, or because they are homeless? How many children will be abandoned by parents who can no longer afford to care for them? Christians should not stand for that. There are many issues to consider. Mr. Obama is not "pro-abortion", how ridiculous. No one WANTS abortion!!! How quick to judge others we are. We should be ashamed.

I would like to comment on Natalies entry. First of all we are all guilty of murdering our unborn because we do not stand up, write our congress people and for the most part, (not all the faithful and thank God for those who fight for the cause for life), take a back seat in the fight against the culture of death assuming someone will take this on. Not as individuals are we guilty but as part of a society, as a country, as a nation whose founding fathers intended For God's law and natural law to remain in place which would thus, make us a trully free country. However the spirit of the world, or anti christ if you will, has superceded reason and now we are the culture of death, regardless of a pro life stance. We must become pro-active if we expect this to change and be trully ready for judgement day. Maybe our vote is how we do that!
Thank you Bishop Herman for call us to task!

The bishop is mistaken in alleging that concern for the economy or the war in Iraq are less important than abortion. Roe v. Wade is not the litmus test for protecting life. This is irresponsible of His Eminence.
In order to protect life in the best, most Catholic, most socially moral way, we must take a whole approach to the causes and effects of poverty, injustice and destruction of life. That means the poor cannot be forgotten, mothers must be encouraged to carry their children to term with help from communities and from the government, and our sons and daughters must no longer unjustly kill and be killed in Iraq. Voting for a pro-life candidate without attention to his sundry and varied other policies is dangerous, and our shepherd, Bishop Herman, is misguided in teaching otherwise.

I'd just like to clarify a few matters. The bishop explaining Church teaching is not breaking the conditions of the Church's tax-exempt status. That would only be specifically endorsing a particular candidate by name
You're making the assumption that a call to vote according to Church teaching is a call to vote for McCain. Possibly. But as long as no names are brought into the discussion, the bonds between church and state are intact.

Thank you, Natalia for refuting the irrational post from Lars. I was about to respond to it, but then I noticed your excellently worded post
There is a difference between a fertilised egg, and an egg and a sperm which has not fused to form life. Lars probably knows this- but is using this common strawman popular amongst the pro infanticide group
Published by: Linda
Brantford, Ontario, Canada 10/20/2008 02:33 PM EST
Separation of church and state means that the STATE doesn't dictate to the CHURCH. The church is obligated to use its influence to guide the state. (Obligated as in mandated by God.) The bishop has not spoken in favour of or against any candidate. He has spoken in his capacity of a teacher and explained what hierarchy the issues have. Simply put, NOTHING TRUMPS LIFE. You are free to ignore his teaching as you wish, but he is not free to ignore his responsibility to warn you.
As to the Church teaching abstinence over contraception, elementary school biology is quite clear that a woman's egg is nothing more than that UNTIL and UNLESS is is fertilized by a male sperm. There are no potential babies dying every month, but there seems to be a loss of intellectual honesty in some of these arguments.
Published by: Natalia
New York, NY 10/20/2008 01:38 PM EST
I can only conclude that this election has caused thousands, perhaps millions of people to lose their ability to reason.
Lars, an unfertilized egg is not a human being. It is an unfertilized egg. You'll notice that the Church defends the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. No conception - no human being. Basic science. The abundance with which women are endowed with ova (and especially men with sperm) would suggest that most gametes are destined not to become zygotes. Of course the Church encourages those called to marriage to be as open to new life as possible, but there is an obvious difference between the building blocks of potential life and new life itself. To suggest that couples who fail to conceive in any given month despite their openness to new life are guilty of murder is nonsensical. To suggest that a woman abstaining from sex while her husband is serving abroad is committing murder is ridiculous. To suggest that couples abstaining from sex for health reasons (e.g. one of them has HIV) are murderers is ludicrous. To suggest that a religious sister who abstains from sexual intercourse throughout her lifetime is responsible for the death of twenty nonexistent children is patently absurd. If your intention is to ridicule the Church’s teaching on abstinence, I would suggest abstaining from such irrational arguments.

It is NOT a violation of church and state for Bishops to speak the truth. It would be a violation if the Church endorsed a particular canidate, or took money from a certain canidate!!! Our good Bishops are just instructing us on the moral code of ethics we should follow when voting! Please, do your research and learn what the Fathers of this country intended separation of church and state to mean. The meaning of church and state has been radically changed by the media! People don't want to hear TRUTH from our Bishops, but it is the Church's role to instruct us to be model Christians! If we didn't need instructing then, yes they could sit back and be quiet like the world wants them to do!! And to the pro-life person in El Salvador, I almost laughed when this person said Obama is against abortions and big government. Please do some more research and look up the FACTS (not media opinions). Find out how Obama has voted in our U.S. Senate on abortions and "big government". Also to this same person...abortion is NOT just a religious issue!!!!It is also a civil right!!!If you were truly pro-life you would understand this concept.

You do realize, of course, that this violates the tax-exempt status of the church, right?
Church's get tax exemptions, in part to stay out of elections and not use the power they have in order to influence the way their parishioners vote. It's all part of that separation of church & state thing. Bishop Herman should've thought of that before he abused his power to speak out.

Amen! Bishop Herman. The heart feels Oh, so splendid when the TRUTH is revealed! Sometimes, for some people, the TRUTH may hurt. No one with a beating heart would ever support a law or law maker which would allow one to enter a home and slaughter its inhabitants. On the same hand, the WOMB is a sacred home that should be safe. Yet, on a daily basis it is invaded and its inhabitant is violently killed. Absolutely senseless loss of life! Life is LOVE. LOVE is mindful and reverent. LOVE is kind.LOVE fosters PEACE and UNITY. Each of us is our brothers' keeper. We are stewards to ALL of creation. On Judgment Day, our LOVING Father will ask the ultimate question that will determine our eternal destiny:"While on your journey, DID YOU LOVE?" This election day does answer that question based on for whom you vote. If you LOVE, you will vote for one who shares your same moral and value core. VOTE ALWAYS PRO-LIFE!

Abstination implies even more murders of unborn babies than abortion. Every female egg could evolve to a human baby and is wasted if not fertilized. A woman should be able to give birth to at least 20 children in a lifetime but with only two children per woman that amounts to 18 murdered babies per woman (in western countries - even in Africa with 5-6 children per woman, this amounts to more than 10 murdered babies per woman). We are here talking about billions of murdered children per year. So the Catholic Church must immediately stop talking about abstination and get going producing children.

Church officials should stop telling people how to vote. Their decision to vote is a personal decision as much as their religiou beliefs. However, if religious persons choose to campaign then their religious organization should no longer benefit from the tax exempt status. Stop using fear against people for choosing the candidate they decide to choose. Their is no moral sin for voting for one candidate or the other.
The fear has to stop. God won't punish someone based on a vote. You should be ashamed of yourself.
