Bishops encourage journalists to courageously communicate the truth

.- In a message marking the World Communications Day—which will be celebrated on Sunday, May 28--the Committee on Communications Media of the Bishops’ Conference of Spain issued a statement calling on journalists to reflect upon the principles and foundations of their profession and to be courageous in communicating the truth. The bishops said that in today’s world of moral and intellectual relativism and manipulation of language, there is a need for principle, courageousness and determination. Journalism faces new challenges now and broadcasters have become the targets of pressure groups and political leaders. Media professionals must “return to the principles and foundations of their trade” and shun ideological, political and economic influences, which often pose an obstacle to truthful reporting. They should also recognize that they should be “servants of the truth and promoters of peace,” the bishops stated. They also called on members of the media to provide as much information as possible to the public, to respect different points of view, to support the family and defend “the great values of the dignity of the human person.” The bishops expressed their own good will to work with the members of the media in “courageously communicating the truth and promoting truly human communications in our country, where there are more things that unite us than divide us.” Subscriber comments:

The key statement in this story is that journalists communicate the truth courageously. That is the real problem with the mainstream media today, especially in countries like Canada. Except for a very few, journalists do not have the courage to communicate the truth. The mainstream media should make every effort to hire faith based journalists and reporters just like they hire visible minorities to be on-air and write editorial content and columns. That way, there would be far more balance in reporting pro-life pro-family morals and values in our society. In many of our daily newspapers in Canada it has become very difficult and even impossible in many cases to even get letters to the editors published that support pro-life pro-family values. And from my experiences I find that even when they do publish letters to the editors on these faith based issues, they are usually very ambiguous letters. Canadians and people throughout the world are not getting all the facts on these very important issues because the media has quite blatantly taken an anti-life anti-family biased agenda in their coverage and editorial policy. For Democracies to work and function properly, the mainstream media must reflect all points of views not just those of the secular world. People need to be told the whole side of the story, not just part of it.
