Canadian bishop encourages boycott of President Clinton

.- After receiving complaints from across Canada, Bishop Gerard Bergie, is encouraging Catholics to boycott an upcoming fundraiser at which former President Bill Clinton is speaking.

Bishop Bergie, who is an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Hamilton in Ontario, says that Clinton is an inappropriate guest speaker for a $500 per seat fundraiser being held by the Catholic Family Counseling Centre, The Kitchener Record reports.

Clinton is well known for his outspoken support of abortion in the U.S., a stance which is absolutely opposed by the Catholic Church.  His administration also promoted abortion worldwide, especially in third world countries, in a stated attempt to control “over-population” and put an end to world poverty.  The Record also noted that while in office, Clinton twice vetoed a ban on partial-birth abortion, which is performed after 20 weeks of pregnancy.  One most remembered moments of his administration remains, however, the scandal surrounding his marital infidelity with a White House staffer.

More recently, the former U.S. President has opposed the Church his continued attempt to push condoms as a primary tool in the prevention of AIDS.

Taken in part or as a whole Clinton’s stance on life issues made him an inappropriate choice to speak at a “Catholic” event, Bergie said."We felt it wasn't appropriate to have Mr. Clinton as a speaker, based on the fact that they were a Catholic counseling centre," Bergie told the Record.

The bishop said that he agrees with the numerous people who have contacted him, concerned about the message Clinton’s message sends.  “They find it difficult to reconcile the fact that an organization that calls itself Catholic has extended an invitation to an individual whose views, in particular regards to life, go against the Catholic Church," the bishop said.

Cathy Brothers, the centre's executive director, told the Record that, “The decision to ask Clinton wasn't connected to the Catholic Church.  Nothing that we're doing, with having Bill Clinton, is a comment at all on what we believe. It's not about our Catholicism."

Brothers also claims that despite their name, the organization is actually a non-denominational agency, saying, “We're a very diverse agency made up of people of all different backgrounds and faiths."

While the organization was founded by a priest in 1952, Brothers said that the center still calls itself Catholic, but only follows the portion of the Church’s teachings.  “We see ourselves as having been committed to the social teachings of the Catholic Church around the importance of doing good works," Brothers said.  "The name has always motivated us to try a little harder to make sure everything we do is based on love and compassion."

But Bishop Bergie said that Catholic organizations don’t need to act in a manner contrary to the teachings of the Church in order to be effective in a world which may disagree with you.  "Personally, I feel you can be faithful to your Catholic tradition and still be able to minister to the greater community," Bergie told the Record. "The greatest challenge is how to deal with that, especially when an organization wants to proceed in a way the diocese feels is not appropriate."

It is clear that the "catholic" in the name of the center is just that, name only. The wishful thinking that George shares with us, is jut that, wishful thinking. At best, Clinton was an average president, fortunate in the enemies he had, and cursed with "friends" and supporters that did nothing to help his agenda. His contempt for the Catholic Faith, and all organized religion was clear. Morals and ethics only get in the way of self actualization and situational ethics.

As for "Uniates", the Maronites never were in schism with Rome. They may be Eastern Rite but they were always in Communion with Rome.

George of San Francisco your comment is out of place, as ususal, for a liberal apologist. You all seem to fall from the same box of cereal ... "a few nuts and a lot of flakes". (I stole that one from Mr. Eberle) The article was about Bill Clinton's stance against the teachings of the Catholic Church and you needed to blame Bush!!! Good Grief!!! By the way, all women plus our Catholic brothers and sisters in the middle east will benefit from the ending of Moslem persecution or were you not aware of that. And by the way, Hilary now claims to support the war effort, that will probably change tomorrow but for now the polls say that is what she should say. And by the way, if JFK ran today he would lose in the Democrat Party primary and win as an independent in the general election with the overwhelming support of conservative Catholics. You my friend would not have voted for him ... go to the library and listen to or read his speeches!!

I am amazed at the comment of Ms. Brothers. Is her organization receiving its funding from the Catholic Church? Is so, and with Catholic in the name of the organization, they are certainly NOT "a very diverse agency". If they are "committed to the social teaching of the church" in name, they should be committed in deed as well. I'm sure it is not inexpensive to have Mr. Clinton speak at their function and I don't wish financial difficulty on them; however, I pray that the good Catholics of the Diocese of Hamilton will not contribute any money which would fatten the pockets of a man who epitomizes the opposing opinion of those who would be attending this event. I hope His Excellency will continue speaking out against this hypocrisy.

Clinton will go down
in history as one
of the greatest of our leaders since JKF & I hope that
Hillary runs in '08 - she'll be even better.
Our current president
is a laughing stock around the world & is responsible for the
civil war that now exists
in Iraq - sounds like he
really "spread democracy"
in the Middle East, especially in light of what just happened in Lebanon; lest we forget,
many of our Catholic uniate Melkite, Maronite,
Chaldean & even Latin rite brother & sisters have been impacted in
both Iraq & Lebanon.
+May Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, pray for us.

Might we remember that this is the same Bill Clinton, who, as President of the United States of America, sat in stony silence while those around him stood and applauded the living saint Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Mr. Clinton has no respect for our Catholic faith, our Catholic nuns, our Catholic principles or our saints to be who point out that abortion is the reason there is no peace in the world.
Let us pray for his soul. Let us pray for his conversion to the truth of which he knows very little.

Bravo to Bishop Bergie for speaking out. Too many Canadian Catholic social agencies are run by people who have no compunction in pushing their personal version of
Catholicism. Clinton's fame and name should hardly be the yardstick by which Catholics measure their convictions. Why is Ms. Brothers running a Catholic agency anyway if she does not wish to follow the teachings of the Church?

Obviously if this family counseling centre uses the word Catholic in its name as it is doing, it should follow the teachings of the Catholic Church in all it does not only following a portion of the Church's teachings as Cathy Brothers, Executive Director of this centre is quoted as saying in this article. If it does not want to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church this centre should immediately stop using the name Catholic to describe its services. Bishop Bergie's comments asking Catholics to boycott this fundraiser because former U.S. President Bill Clinton is an inappropriate speaker due to his positions on life and family issues are correct and exactly what a Catholic Bishop should be publicly stating so all Catholics clearly know the teachings of the Catholic Church. Just out of curiosity Bill Clinton normally receives close to $200,000 for each speaking engagement. Exactly how much is Ms. Brothers and this so called Catholic Family Counseling Centre paying Mr. Clinton for his speaking services? The Catholic Church must remain vigilant as Bishop Bergie is in this case that Catholic Charities follow the teachings of the Catholic Church if they wish to keep the name Catholic in their titles.

Thank you Bishop Bergie for your leadership. For too long Catholics have apologized for standing up for truth. We need more leadership from our bishops.

Cathy Brothers states that what she is doing is "not about our Catholicism." Cathy, I am sorry that you miss the point of Catholicism - to live our lives in, for, and through Christ. True followers of Christ must make eveerything they do about Him and His kingdom here on earth. I pray that you will come to know His love for you.

Hurray for our fellow Catholics to the North!! I hope the Canadian News Agencies are broadcasting loud and clear the complaints about Bill Clinton. What an enormous embarrassment to the U.S. Not to mention Hilary. Sad to say many Catholics I have talked with are Hilary fans. Many American Catholics trust all the popular media people and not the reliable news from authentic Catholic Media. CNA & CWN are the people to listen to for the correct story. I never voted for him!!!
