Cardinal Roger Mahony

.- Responding to a reporter’s question about the place of abortion in health care, Archbishop of Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony has said abortion should not be in the health care reform bill and that President Obama believes similarly.

The cardinal briefly spoke to CNSNews.com at a Sept. 22 panel discussion in Washington, D.C. on faith communities’ involvement in immigration reform. The event was sponsored by the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank.

Asked whether he thought that the proposals fund abortion and whether they should be amended to explicitly prohibit abortion, he said the issue was “way beyond his field,” which is immigration.

“I really haven’t kept up on that, and I spend all my time on this other [topic]. You have to get somebody who spends time on that,” he remarked.

Asked whether he believed abortion should be funded under the health care reform bill, Cardinal Mahony said “No, but that’s what the president said, too.”

The Cardinal's 'mealy-mouthed' weak response is entirely consistent with the ongoing suicide of the Catholic Church. Moral relativism is a crock. Abortion is murder, period. I wonder if Jesus Christ equivicated on the Cross? Just letting Obama speak at Notre Dame illustrated one of only two situations: First; the Church has given up it's own adherence to the Word of God and has NO moral authority; or, second, the Church has either lost control of the Catholic Educational System in America, or Notre Dame and the rest of the 'wayward' colleges have no fear of any consequences of their evil actions. The descent of the United States is being constantly aided by the weakness/and-or approval of the Church. Unfortunately, there is no other way to say it. I fear for us all...

Mahony talking morality again???, with his mouthpiece Tamberg surfing the internet to defend this protector of rapist priests along with his long time fellow complicit bishops. Sure Tamberg, Mahony is concerned about how abortions are funded?? In the Catholic Church, usually it's your local rapist priest, bishop or Cardinal who not only forces abortions on it's victims but funds them too with a wink of an eye. Heard of the: Fr.Lenihan rape case; church officials forces abortion on its child rape victim Not to mention I suspect many other cases of forced abortions of priest rape victims....thank goodness Lenihan's victim courageously spoke out. Yeah, Mahony wants no trace in the healthcare system of church officials rapes and abortions. His got a false image to protect. Hope Obama doesn't have or put his head in the sand on this one.

Incredible! Having lived in Los Angeles for most of my life, this recent lack of leadership from Cardinal Mahony doesn't surprise me, but still pains me greatly to watch. From his bungling and coverups of the sexual abuse scandals, to the chronic overspending of disocesan funds (re: Cathedral), to his legally conflicting position on immigration; to now this demonstration of "above my pay grade" Obama-like response in the presence of an opportunity to strongly support life, how much more can the Catholics in LA endure? I hope that soon the Catholic parishes in LA will finally petition the Holy See to review the conduct of Cardinal Mahony, and that the Vatican consider bringing stronger leadership to SoCal. Catholics need a strong leader in these times of moral relativism...Cardinal Mahony appears more interested in political correctness than he does in providing clear moral leadership. Please pray for him, and the Holy Father, that they will consider this most recent situation as a lost opportunity to demonstrate the Church's clear stand on life and will work hard to avoid offering up a soft-soap answer when given the opportunity again.

Be personally responsible for God's gift of creation, Benedict XVI counsels! Wow, if only the not so good Bishop could catch up with his mission as a leader of the Truth in the world, he would not be so gullible to believe Obama's lie about the current health care reform bills floating in congress. Does he really believe we will accept the idea that he spends so much time with one facet of the prolife movement that he is oblivious to what Obama has done against babies in the womb. Very sad, that is what Cardinal Mahoney makes me, very very sad! All he need do is follow the money trail and the river of blood!

As a journalist and spokesman for the Los Angeles Archdiocese, I am disappointed in this hit piece masquerading as news. It only gives credence to the saying that the Internet is more often the source for ammunition rather than information. The interviewer, in restating his question, presumably still referring to Cardinal Rigali's letter, asks Cardinal Mahony if he believes that abortion should be funded in the health care bill. The cardinal says, "No." He also holds the President to his pledge that it won't be in the plan he signs. Cardinal Mahony, past chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Pro-Life Committee, was simply deferring to Cardinal Rigali, current chairman, on the specifics of these bills. That's typical protocol for U.S. Bishops. In no way did he imply or state that he did not agree with Cardinal Rigali. Indeed, again, read his answer: He agrees with Cardinal Rigali. The Cardinals are long-time friends and seminary classmates. They are in complete agreement on this issue.

So, whether the health bill should be amended to explicity prohibit abortion is "way beyond his field". Unbelievable! So he believes what Obama says. Yet all pro-life groups says the existing bill includes funding for abortion. Obama wants funding for abortion and everyone knows it. I suppose Mahony is happy with the existing bill. God help us.

So the President and Mahony are in agreement---but does this imply the Cardinal's 'no' is just formality? They both can take the 'above my pay grade defense' on this bill it seems.
