Catholic boy in UK refuses Cub Scout pledge of allegiance to Queen

.- An eight-year-old Catholic boy cannot be a Cub Scout in Britain because he refuses to pledge allegiance to the Queen of the United Kingdom on religious grounds.

Matthew McVeigh, who lives near Glasgow, refused to recite the Cub Scout Promise because it requires swearing allegiance to the Queen. He was told he cannot become a full Cub Scout as a result, the Daily Mail reports.

“It's not fair. I don't want to say a promise that I don't believe in. I really enjoy the Cubs and don't want to feel left out or different from everybody else,” Matthew said.

Matthew’s mother, Tracy Anne McVeigh, said her son’s refusal to recite the part of the oath promising “to do my duty to the Queen” was a matter of principle. She said she was especially irked that other nationalities living in Britain can change the wording of the promise to accommodate their requirements.

“The 1701 Act of Settlement specifically discriminates against Catholics and only allows for Protestants to take the throne -  so why should we make an oath to the monarchy?”

According to Cub Scout Association spokesman Chris Foster, people of other nationalities residing in the United Kingdom may change the section regarding the Queen to pledge their duty “to the country in which I am now living.”
“However, British subjects must promise to do their duty to the Queen,” Foster said. “She is the head of state.”

Scout Association rules also allow for the word “God” in the promise to be replaced with other deities according to people’s religion, but the guidelines are strict for the section regarding the Queen.

Matthew’s mother said the boy has been going to Cub Scouts since January and was preparing to become a full fledged member.

“He was really excited about it,” she said. “But when he had to fill out the application form, he realized he would have to pledge duty to the Queen.

“We weren't happy as we don't think it's necessary in today's world. We are supposed to live in a multicultural age but this just flies in the face of that.”

She said she expected Cub Scout leaders to allow a change of wording.

“I was gobsmacked that the Cub Scout commissioner said that if Matthew didn't say the Promise then he would effectively be out the door,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.

“He said he could still go along to trips but he would not be insured. As he can't wear the necktie, that sets him apart from his friends and I think that on trips it would be a safety issue too.

“I am not asking for special treatment. I would just like him to be a Scout without compromising on what he believes in,” she said.

If this is a mtter of conscience for the boy he should consider goign to America. I suspect he'd have to make a similar oath in Canada or Australia. In America boyscouts have to say to God an my country but gays scouts are kicked out- (i think it's the God part). The Queen is very mucha real part of the governemnt and not jsut some anachronism from everything I've read about the commmonwealth. Britain has freedom of relgious practice and diseent which is not the same thing as religious equality and neutrality. Britain ahs an official state religion and church as do the Belgians, Sapnish, Swedes, Dutch, and others. You fail to see that allowing a Catholic to have the throne udnermines the effort and struggle and sacrfices of all those who died so Britain could be protestant. Catholics are not persecuted as they once were and under Brittish law that is a privilege of good behaviour on the part of Catholics. Brittish rights are privileges to be granted and taken away - few Brits udnerstand that - The Queen is decidely benevolent in being as hands off as she is. Before you say the whole monarchy should be abolsihed realize that your mixed system is more politically stable and acheives several Greek ideals of freedom and good governance. Brittish naitonal identity and independce from mainland Europe is wrapped up in its becomming protestant and forming its own church. She is as mucha sybol of antioanl unity as our flag is or our eagle.

Since the time of this publication has young Mr. McVeigh been allowed to join the scouts? Is he still being told he can't be a scout unless he recites the Cub Scout Promise including the "to do my duty to the Queen" line? Is there anyway to contact the family?

Well done, young lad. You did what many before you did not have the courage, conviction or knowledge to do. You stood up for your faith, though it cost you something you truly enjoy, and are staying true to your faith. If only more, older and "wiser" people were like you, perhaps we wouldn't be in as big a mess as we are.

Mr.Matthew McVeigh is brave. He can't make a promise that he feels he can't keep! He isn't willing to risk his soul by lieing -what guts!!!

Matthew McVeigh, at 8 years of age, is showing more courage than all of the other Roman Catholic boys and their parents, who join the Cub Scouts. Matthew McVeigh has read the conditions of membership and as a result of the discrimination against Catholics, in "the 1701 Act of Settlement...that only allows PROTESTants to take the throne", has refused to recite the oath promising "to do my duty to the Queen".

It is time to form Catholic Cub Scouts and eliminate this discriminatory oath!

Too bad the parents are using their child and our ancient Faith for shallow posturing. He is being taught not to be loyal to the Queen who is in fact loyal to him.

Thomas More was always loyal to his King, even though his loyalty cost him his life.
