Catholic leaders react to Biden pick; Bishops say he should refrain from Communion

.- The selection of Sen. Joseph Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate is drawing a chorus of disapproval from Catholic intellectual and pro-life leaders because of Biden’s longstanding support for abortion. Most recently, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver has said that Biden should refrain from Communion. Over the weekend, CNA spoke with several prominent Catholics regarding Biden’s nomination for the Democratic vice-presidential slot. The well-known Catholic intellectual and author George Weigel explained to CNA that Obama’s choice was expected. “Barack Obama is a pro-abortion radical, so there's nothing surprising about his choosing a pro-abortion running mate,” said Weigel. According to Weigel, an Obama-Biden ticket is “deeply disturbing” because “neither Senator Obama nor Senator Biden seems to have taken Catholic arguments about the first principles of justice seriously.” “The Church's pro-life position is not ‘sectarian;’ it can be engaged by anyone willing to work through a serious philosophical argument,” Weigel asserted. “Neither Obama nor Biden seems willing to do that -- which casts a rather large shadow over their claims to be the ticket of thoughtfulness and intellectual seriousness.” Weigel predicts that the choice of Biden will present the public with the sight of "‘Catholics for Obama’ tying themselves into even tighter theological pretzels, as they try to justify a vote for what seems likely to be the most radically pro-abortion ticket in American history.” Deal Hudson, a Catholic political analyst, commented to CNA that the selection of Sen. Biden by Obama “has underscored his abortion extremism.” On the other hand, the tapping of the senator from Delaware may have some positive implications for Obama as well, noted Hudson, who called him “an affable, veteran politician who is unlikely to repeat the 2004 mistakes of Sen. John Kerry by overselling his ‘Catholic’ credentials.” Fr. Frank Pavone, the head of Priests for Life, took a broader view of Barack Obama’s vice presidential selection, calling it “a wake-up call to the Church (clergy and laity alike).” Among the steps that the Church needs to take, said Fr. Pavone, are: to “improve the way we hand on the Faith, be willing to exercise the spiritual work of mercy of admonishing the sinner, and to keep politically active so that such people are voted out of office.” Politicians, Fr. Pavone underscored, are engaged in publicly expressing “their support for keeping abortion legal” while at the same time consistently refusing to admit what abortion is. He added, “if a politician cannot respect the life of a little baby, how is he supposed to respect yours and mine?” The president of the national Catholic advocacy group Fidelis, Brian Burch, interpreted the Biden pick as having “re-opened a wound among American Catholics.” He added that, “the American bishops have made clear that Catholic political leaders must defend the dignity of every human person, including the unborn. Sadly, Joe Biden's tenure in the United States Senate has been marked by steadfast support for legal abortion." Burch also highlighted the fact that, “Biden's own bishop, Bishop Michael Saltarelli of Wilmington, Del., has said that the issues pertaining to the sanctity of human life are the ‘great civil rights issues of this generation’.” Bishop Saltarelli denounced the notion that politicians can 'personally oppose' abortion, but refuse to pass laws protecting the unborn. In fact, Bishop Saltarelli has made clear that pro-abortion Catholic politicians should refrain from receiving the Eucharist. On Monday morning in Denver, where the Democratic National Convention is underway, Archbishop Charles Chaput told the Associated Press that because of support for abortion, Biden should refrain from taking Communion. During his tenure in the senate, Joe Biden has voted numerous times in support of abortion and has characterized himself as a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade. Biden also revealed at a Democratic presidential primary debate in Las Vegas last November that his criteria for selecting nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court would include a pro-Roe test. “I would not appoint anyone who did not understand that Section 5 of the 14th Amendment and the Liberty Clause of the 14th Amendment provided a right to privacy,” Biden said. “That's the question I'd ask them. If that is answered correctly, that that is the case, then it answers the question, which means they would support Roe v. Wade." Subscriber comments:

TO the ex-nun comment above. The Church has every right and obligation to instruct and to encourage the Government to act correctly when it deals with life issues. Abortion is murder and infanticide and there is no other way to put it. Madame Pelosi opened the door for all Catholics to step up and be counted FOR LIFE and for the Constant teaching of the Church since her beginning and foundation by Jesus Christ. All life is sacred. Ex-nun you may also want to revisit the psalms and Old Testament where God speaks that He knew each of us, our days and thoughts before we were in our mother's wombs!

The "I'm personally opposed to abortion but can't impose my religious views on others" is the lamest excuse I've ever heard. It is the job of politicians to impose their views on others. That is the very nature if legislation. Other than the murdering of children their is not one aspect of daily life that politicians don't impose some restrictions on individual behavior. All legislation is based upon some moral code. Why do I have to slow down while driving through a school zone? Because, morally, we think it's a bad idea to put kids at risk. It's time that the Bishops start to act like the successors to the Apostle's they are supposed to be and excommunicate these people. Not out of anger but for the state of their souls, after all, does anybody really think our Savior is going to buy their lame arguement.

Why are the news media bringing to public eye that these 2 pro-abortion officials are in fact in violation of the church law?

I get so discouraged and fed up witht the vitriol that supposed Catholic "Christians" express towards anyone with whom they disagree. I believe that life starts at conception. But I do not think the Catholic Church, like all other religions, has any right to meddle in politics. Where is the compassion and tolerance that we are supposed to show. Frankly, the rabid life to righters scare the heck out me because of their fury and hatred towards others and I would never join their group. Isn't hatred just another form of murder?

It all boils down to this: "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul."

So you want to change life at conception for political purposes... just so you can vote for someone. In your heart and soul you know better. You can write it all you want, talk it all you want, spin it and change up the words and make your self feel all better, but abortion is murder and when you stand for your judgement, maybe he wont notice you supported those murders/murderers and looked the other way when you checked beside their names.... Yea, right!

To Jose: prohibition isn't the same as Roe vs Wade - alchohol isn't intrinsically evil, whereas abortion is.
If Biden isn't pro-abortion, than why does he continue to vote pro-abortion? Obama said that making a decision about a baby's life is "above his pay grade". If that's the case, he shouldn't be voting as if it is within his pay grade. When in doubt if a life exists, then you should vote on the side of life.

All life is sacred. Some, like Obama and Biden, say the tiny embryo in the woman's womb is not a human being. Tell me, Obama/Biden, has that tiny embryo ever grown and matured into anything else but a human life? Pro life is not about a woman's right to choose; it's about a new life's right to live.
How can anyone say that someone else has no right to live?

In keeping with the socialist leanings of Senators Obama and Biden, I'd like to call to mind the credo of another important socialist movement of the last century, the National Socialists of Germany. The National Socialists believed that not all human life is "worthy of life" - that is, that there is such a thing as "life not worthy of life," life that the government should help to destroy. The first documented victim of this philosophy - which ultimately resulted in the Holocaust - was not a Jew; it was a tiny, defenseless, disabled newborn baby. This child was declared an unwanted burden on society, and so, with the approval of his parents, he was killed. We in the United States are on a very, very dangerous path. Thanks be to God that we have strong and courageous spiritual leaders like Archbishop Charles Chaput, who put themselves on the line to warn us as to where we are headed as a nation, and to protect the most defenseless among us.

As an ex-nun, I firmly believe that the Catholic Church should not meddle in USA politics. Where were they hiding all those years when their priests could not keep their hands in the right places?

Sen Biden has repeatedly spoken out against abortion. He is not pro-abortion. Those who opposed prohibition were called pro-drunkeness and other names. But they only recognized that outlawing alcohol caused more problems than it solved. Before Roe v. Wade (an abominable decision that must be overturned), state after state was legalizing abortion because its criminalization was resulting in backdoor abortions and other public health problems. Criminalizing abortion will not make it go away. Putting women and doctors in jail resulted in worse problems than it solved. Sen Biden believes in government policies that help to reduce abortions and save the lives of the unborn. His policies help to reduce unwanted pregnancies and give support to women to continue their pregnancies until birth. Sen Biden fully supports the teaching of the Roman Catholic church against abortion. What he does not agree with is the political strategies of certain bishops, and this website, on how to most realistically reduce abortions and save the lives of the unborn.

Archbishop Chaput and Bishop Saltarelli state that pro-abortioin pols should not take Communion. However, they refuse to take responsibility to deny Communnion to these people as the Vatican instructs. Until they deny these manifest sinners the sacred species, and instruct their priests to do likewise, the pols will continue to smirk at the toothless directives, the sacrament will continue to be violated and the Church will continue to be mocked.

It seems that Senator Obama is described as having one of the most extreme positions that one can find when it comes to the issue of abortion….Normally, I can understand a lawyer’s dancing on the head of a pin for the sake of not wanting to undermine a future legal argument or position. However, regarding Senator Obama, some other details give me pause and raise questions about whether his stated motivation(s) can be trusted.

These are indeed Wolves in Sheeps clothing. Fr. Pavone best summed it up by his question - "If a politician cannot respect the life of an innocent baby, how is he supposed to respect yours or mine? Indeed! Lord, have mercy.
