Catholics United targets Archbishop Naumann, defends Gov. Sebelius

Archbishop Naumann, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, President Obama

.- In a startling defense of legal abortion supporter Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Catholics United has attacked Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, accusing him being more interested in trying to score political points against the governor than in crafting effective abortion policy within the reality of politics.

The salvo from Catholics United comes as advisors to President Obama have told the press that he has decided on Sebelius as his next secretary of Health and Human Services nominee.

Kathleen Sebelius, who professes to be Catholic, has a problematic record on abortion.

Although Catholics United mentions the Kansas governor’s "tireless support for children's health care and education, and her efforts to provide public financing for adoption and pregnancy support centers," the group fails to mention her 30 years of simultaneously advocating to keep abortion legal.

In the Spring of 2008, Archbishop Naumann met with Gov. Sebelius to ensure that she understood the gravity of her position. After meeting with her, Archbishop Naumann asked her to stop receiving Communion.

As Archbishop Naumann explained to CNA, he requested that Gov. Sebelius stop receiving Communion because of her "30-year history of advocating and acting in support of legalized abortion."

The Thursday statement by Catholics United, which is mostly dedicated to rebuffing the president of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, marks the first time that the organization has targeted a specific Catholic bishop by name.

"Like Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann – who often seems more interested in scoring political points against Gov. Sebelius than crafting effective abortion policy within the reality of politics – Mr. Donohue is doing a disservice to those Americans who will benefit from Gov. Sebelius's leadership as Health and Human Services Secretary."

To Sissy from Texas.

Thanks for your reply and critical comments.

Unfortunately you did not address my points but just criticised the implication that an education allows one to re-think the church. But that is the clear history of mankind, where social progress is tied into research and education that expands our views of the world, infusing our ideas and decisions.

You suggest that "a recent grad of a presitgious (sic) supposedly catholic univ." was sanctimonious. But you failed to take note of the survey that 60% of catholic university students think abortion should be legal. That's a higher percentage than President Obama's vote where only 54% of Catholics voted for him. This suggests that even more catholics will vote their personal conscience in future elections, further damaging the church's power to dictate behavior.

In medieval times the church held that dissecting a human body was immoral. Folks like Michelangelo had to do this work in secret to learn how the body was constructed. Today we have catholic hospitals doing surgery so clearly the church was wrong. Eventually it changed, but due to public pressure NOT due to the hierarchy studying the reality. The church view on abortion will also change in another few hundred years, thanks to brave folks like Gov. Sebelius.

Responding to Charles:

Not everyone who calls himself catholic is a true catholic. Also, I expect many catholics who thought Obama would make a good choice are now suffering a huge case of "buyers remorse".

Also, your sanctimony regarding the wisdom you and others claim to have attained due to the "well rounded education" falls flat. There is nothing brilliant about someone just because he/she has attended one of todays institutions of higher learning, where they are brainwashed and led to a loss of faith. Earning a cardboard hat does not make one smart. Today, quite the contrary, many may think they will gain the world, but rather will suffer the loss of their own souls. That's just plain dumb.

I heard the term catholic bs from a recent grad of a presitgious supposedly catholic univ. In all honesty, he had elevated himself to a level of sanctimony that was certain to lead to a disastrous fall. Those who have gained a measure of wisdom through lifes experiences have much more to offer the world than the brainwashed boneheads with the piece of paper and cardboard hat.

Abortion is killing of life from conception.
Professing to be a Catholic means Pro-Life. You can not be Pro-Choice. There is No Option. Our Catholic Faith comes through the Jesus Christ, Bible, Tradition, Magisterium.
Sin is forgiven through Confession. But to continue to practice the sin without remorse is a worse sin.
I will pray for all in the government of the USA and the World to change for Pro-Life. The World will change for the Good.
God Bless All.

Clearly Cardinal Newman is mostly interested in playing politics. He criticizes the Governor and publicly condemns her position on abortion, knowing full well she not only won't change but has the right, as a moral Catholic, to form her own opinion on abortion or any other church doctrine.

The Archbishop really wants to plant and maintain the fear, uncertainty and doubt in his catholics, trying to keep his ability to sway elections. Of course, that power is sinking faster than the stock market.

In the recent election, Catholics voted for Obama in larger numbers than the general population. And a recent survey found 60% of catholic university students believe abortion should be legal.

Once a catholic gets a decent, well rounded education they are able to see through the church's BS and form their own decisions.

Fortunately, the church has very little power to stop Governor Sebelius from becoming Secretary of HHS and continuing her tradition of support for the law of the land.

Governor Sibelius and her supporters--both catholics or non-catholics should remember that God is not a passive spectator in all of THESE EVIL deeds. Justice is inevitable! Evil will be punished in this life and in the next. The Archbishop's plea for her NOT to receive the Eucharist is a brotherly advice. This advice was meant not to oppress but to guide her. Whether you believe it or not, receiving the Eucharist in the state of public sin is sacrilege and brings very bad things to one's soul! THE ARCHBISHOP IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO TELL THE GOVERNOR TO STAY AWAY FROM FURTHER DOOMING HER SOUL--AND THAT IS THE CALLING OF EVERY BISHOP--TO CARE FOR THE SOULS OF HIS FLOCK!

I pray for all those commentators who have lost all objective sense of right or wrong.

Abortion is murder--whether the government agrees with it or not. Let us appoint men and women of life, not of death.

And if Sebelius is excommunicated, as so many here have demanded, will that solve the problem of abortion in Kansas? ( I suspect that Dr. Tiller will continue with or without Sebilius as governor.)
And will the excommunication of the members of "Catholics United" make some of the people here, happy? (There will ALWAYS be someone else that could be excommunicated for certain behaviors.) When physical violence (abortion) is fought with emotional/spiritual violence (demands to excommnicate others), only violence wins. The "loser" is charity toward all....the unborn and the born.

Steve - I am sorry, Gov Sebelius is a public figure and has publicly promoted abortion in her state. She has publicly opposed the Archbishop on many occasions. Her sin is not private between her and God. Actually no sin is. Our Church teaches that all sin has a social dimension. All the more so in this case.
As a Catholic leader her public promotion of abortion is not "problematic" or private. It is actually heresy in the true sense - public and persistent proclamations contrary to Church doctrine in spite of previous charitable admonishments to return to the Faith. Of course it would be up to the Archbishop to prove this through the Tribunal, something which he has mercifully chosen not to do.

I would like very much to make a very important point. I am a member of Catholics United for the Faith which is not associated with this organization calling themselves Catholics United. In my view they maybe united but they are not Catholics. CUF or Catholics United for the Faith has a long track record of being faithful to the Magesterium in all Catholic teaching. It goes to show how crafty Obama is in getting a pro-abortion Catholic to be the henchman (in this case henchwoman) to make sure the holocaust continues. The previous candidate was also a pro-abortion Catholic.

Men like Obama, who advocate for Abortion and Contraceptives, are weak minded men, and haven't made one decision, that is consistent with a Pro-Life Ethos. You're his pick, but you've left Christ, will He pick you, to be in His Heavenly Home, someday? Not, if you continue on as you are, w/o repentance, and fruits befitting repentance. I am so proud of Archbishop Nauman for standing up against Sebelius. It sickens me that she is going to be head of HHS but at least maybe we will get pro-life legislation passed in this state. She may not have actively supported abortion but Tiller - the famous abortionist - gave more campaign funds to her than anyone else and as long as she is governor no one can touch him. She has vetoed many pro-life bills including one that would have required abortion clinics to be regulated. Right now veterinary clinics have to pass stricter regulations than abortion clinics.

God bless Archbishop Naumann. And may the Lord Himself intervene and impede this Governor, this renegade anti-Catholic organization, and the Obama administration from committing further evil against the unborn.

Let the Church exercise its rightful jurisdiction over those who claim the name, "Catholic:"

"Whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven;" and "Whose ever sins you forgive, they are forgiven. Whose ever sins you retain, they are retained."

If "pro-choice" Catholics value their souls, let them repent before God and be reconciled to Him and His Bride. If they do not value their souls, or if they are simply wolves in sheep's clothing, then by exercise of Her rightful jurisdiction the Church will protect the sheep from them.

Amen.

Correction to the referenced Bible passage...Please see John 8:43-45
Here it is:
43 Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. 45 But if I say the truth, you believe me not.
Please note that Jesus equates death and lies. Does that sound familiar in our present day politics?

I fully support the teachings of the Catholic Church and pray for an end to abortion. Gov. Sebelius' tolerance of abortion is problematic, but I found the tone of a number of comments on this site inappropriate, calling for excommunication. Gov. Sebelius has not, as far as I am aware, ever "promoted" abortion. We all sin, and her situation is a private one between God and her. Jesus warned us : "judge not lest ye be judged." In the end, abortion will cease not when Roe v. Wade is overturned (there were abortions before Roe,usually of the back-alley kind), but when there is no more demand for it. Spread a message of love and convert hearts and minds. Tone down the sputtering rhetoric.

In one of his most famous passages, Dr. Martin Luther King reminded Americans of the different roles religion and government play in society. “The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state,” King wrote in Strength to Love, a sermon collection. “It must be the guide and the critic of the state, and never its tool. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.”

The Church needs to show in no uncertain terms that politicians who support abortion are excommunicated. IMHO there is a need for clarity because groups advocating abortion present themselves as still faithful Catholics. Now more than ever, we need the strength and power of convictions of our bishops to practice their teaching as well as their pastoral role when putting these posers in their place i.e. outside the communion of the faithful. So, the Mystical Body of Christ is asking for the formal excommunication of pro-abortion politicians. Can this have the power of Sensus Fidei?

We need more bishops like Archbishop Naumann to point out the problem of compromising and selling the Catholic principles to the nominally Catholic politicians. Even if Catholics in America were traditionally associated with the Democrat Party, there is now a clear divergence between the essential goals of the two realms. Hoping that prayers only will convert Democrats to the pro-life position after 30-40 years of opposite practice, is, in my opinion, inadequate. More concerete steps taken by the bishops, like Archbishop Naumann, are a necessary act of courage. The same message was given to Nancy Pelosi by the Holy Father. Catholics United will also want to accuse the Pope of 'scoring political points'. May be they should finally choose between being Catholic and being Democrats.
