Deaf couple wants to use genetic selection to have a deaf child
Related articles:
.- Reports are circulating in the British press about the case of two deaf artists who have said they are willing to use genetic selection in order to ensure that their second child—who would be conceived in vitro—is born deaf. British designer Tomato Lichy and his partner, theater director Paula Garfield, are deaf and have a three year-old daughter named Molly who was born deaf as well. Both were pleased at the news that their first daughter—conceived naturally—was born deaf and now they will attempt to have a second child. Due to Paula’s age, they doubt she can conceive naturally and therefore they said they are willing to use in vitro fertilization and genetic selection techniques to ensure the baby is born deaf as well. Their case has sparked a debate in Britain over the use of in vitro fertilization and cases of genetic defects. The British government’s current norms stipulate that clinics must reject embryos conceived in vitro that show evidence of physical or mental defects in favor of those that are healthy. A parent should want what is BEST for their child, and for a parent to deliberately create a disabled child so he/she would be like his or her own parents is beyond abhorent!
And by the way, if I had been such a child and I found out in adulthood what my parents had done, I would sue them for every single thing that they owned! No parent has the right to play God to the detriment of their children!

What?
Every time I hear of yet another atrocity, I can't help but wonder why we haven't heard the trumpets yet! How much worse will it get?! This is another instance of well intentioned "advances" being twisted into the unthinkable! I only hope that someone with the power to stop this, will take the time to contemplate the psychological impact this will have on the child. Imagine facing obstacles for your entire life, then one day learning that your parents had DELIBERATELY placed them in your path!! A new mudslide on the slippery slope of genetic manipulation....

Wow.
Being aborted and not being born at all. Being selected for birth, but with DEFECTS for LIFE that my parents decided on! Here's where the rubber hits the road when it comes to doctors, geneticists and scientists in related disciplines, playing "God". Science can always tell us whether we "can" do it. We need to listen to SomeOne Else to tell us whether we "should" do it. Dan in Calgary ADD A COMMENT (Your e-mail will NOT be published):
