Dominican sisters to appear on Oprah Winfrey Show
![]() Dominican Sisters of Mary

.- The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist have made waves across the nation for their rapid growth and their devout orthodoxy. Now, they are once again in the national spotlight, being featured on the popular Oprah Winfrey Show. “They phoned us and asked if they could do a program on us with Oprah. That's all we know!” Sister Joseph Andrew Bogdanowicz, OP, vocations director for the community, told CNA in an email. The show featuring the sisters will air on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. The same day happens to be the congregation’s 13th anniversary. The coincidence is “amazing, as they did not know this when they chose the date -- but God did!” exclaimed the vocations director. When asked why they chose to accept the invitation and appear on the show, “Oprah is powerful -- we entrust this endeavor to Mother Mary for the greater glory of her Son! It's truly been a lot of fun as 'the world' does not begin to understand our life,” the Dominican said. “Hopefully, this will inspire more people to love God and serve Him in the manner He invites each of us -- and get the Gospel on the airwaves!!” The Dominican Sisters of Mary were founded in 1997 by four Dominican sisters responding to John Paul II’s call for a new evangelization. In the 13 years of their existence, they have grown to almost 100 members. Their newly constructed motherhouse is already filled to capacity. Currently, the average age of the sisters is 26 and the average age of their postulants is 21. “Young people, inspired by John Paul the Great and Pope Benedict XVI, are generous and desirous of living sacrificial, authentic lives as God asks of them,” Sr. Joseph Andrew said. “We agreed (to be on the show) because it will further understanding of Religious Life,” she added. “The Catholic Church is alive, well, and thriving as is authentic religious life,” she added. Vicky in Cincinati, OH, I want to believe that you are in one of the "liberated" religious orders or may have been a religious before. Also you seem to have issues with the Ann Arbor and Nashville Dominican sisters. They may seem childish for you, but in the eyes of God and his church, they are mature christians. You seem to confuse childlike christian witness with childishness. Remember what our Lord said in his word, the kingdom of God is to such as these (refering to children). You also seems to have serious issues with their talk about boy friends and what the left behind. Do they come to your apartment to talk about these things? They were on a show to proundly and confidently witness to their vocation. Ofcourse questions came and they answered it. I wonder why that is painful to you. These sisters as faithful to Christ and his church and the good Lord is blessing them with vocations, but that makes you so angry. I want you to know that the church does not lack vocations, but what she lacks is authentic witness. Those religious who in the name of liberation and freedom, threw away their habit, not even retaining a veil, are dying away. How can you expect vocation when many are ashamed and afraid to show themselves are religious? How will the young people reconcile your idea of religious life with how they feel called? If you think that the life that you and the liberated ones are living is okay, good for you, but dont vilify and mock others who witness to their vocation.

Clare Robbins, I rather say a big shame on you, for not using your reason. Your envy and pain has clouded your reasoning. Can you point out any way that the Dominican sisters negate your so called work that other people are doing? "Is the Religious life all about Doing, or is it also about Being?" You have to watch what you say to others. The Dominican sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist are sharing their life with others and are proud of their calling. I have never heard the sisters, neither in the Oprah show, did the sisters condem or mock other people. You have chosen to see what you want to see. The sisters are faithful to God and his church and they many people who are looking for authentic religious life are being drawn to them. That seems to be a big pain and sorrow for you. You feel that everyone should become a disident and should go against authentic Catholic spirit like you and your folks are doing. Instead of troubling youself with the sisters, rather look at why people are not coming to your order. Many of you threw away your habit in the name of freedom and liberation. Good for you, but don't expect everyone to follow you. If this is how those who have gone before us in faith lived the religious life, we may not have the church and the word of God today. May be you and your folks know better than everyone. Begin now to see the good in others. I know that its difficult for you and your folks to so see where you have gone wrong, but renew and reive your order

"The habit of a religious woman is not a symbol of a wedding dress nor has it ever been a wedding dress"
I believe the person who made that comment was accurate. In the past, but rarely anymore, postulants in some communities wore a wedding dress when they were received as novices. There is a great description of this custom in the book, "A Right to be Merry," about Poor Clares. The wedding dress symbolized the spiritual marriage with Christ, but I don't believe there was too much emphasis afterwards on being a bride of Christ. I think sometimes that the Ann Arbor and Nashville Dominicans are going overboard in their bride of Christ comparisons and symbolism. Some of the young women appear rather childish and they are of course very young, when they try to express themselves. I also find the endless talk of the clothes and shoes they left behind, not to mention boyfriends, to be silly and immature.

Sorry, but this conversation is divisive to the church. Shame on anyone, included these sisters, for negating the good that all other communities do to bring glory to God, not to themselves.

Kathy, you will be in my prayers. I have an acquaintance whose daughter and son entered different cloistered Benedictine monasteries during the past year. She is grieving their loss terribly. She said the loss feels like a death--she misses them terribly, but has great joy as if they were both in heaven. The rules for communication are quite like what you describe of your daughter. This mother is grateful that both of the children are pleased and happy with their callings, but the pain she is experiencing as their mother who has to let them go is great. She is trying to offer her pain as a sacrifice for their vocations and for the rest of their family. Bless you as you work through your grief.

Congratulations to the Dominican sisters for getting on the Oprah show!
so Oprah if you are reading this please come and do a Pro-Life show and continue the momentum generated by the marvellous Tim Tebow ad at the Superbowl!
Oprah you would surely know that life aint ever just for the privileged, the planned, the perfect and that the innocent unborn are part of the wider community.
Oprah your mother or someone else so prudently protected your passage to life so please help all the unborn get a chance at life like you did!

Kathy, I can understand missing your daughter and that is very natural. But the thing is IS YOUR DAUGHTER HAPPY? If your daughter is happy at the Convent be HAPPY AND REJOICE FOR HER! She could have been something negative in society. Many women turn to drugs or prostitution BUT SHE GAVE HER LIFE TO THE LORD!
If it is not meant for her to be a Nun then its not meant to be! But she is discerning and rejoice for her! KEep you and your daughter in prayers!

Kathy, in Rochester, NY, I was sorry to read that you feel heartbroken over your daughter's vocation. My brother is a cistercian (cloistered) monk on the west coast. He left when I was a senior in high school, 1981. I have seen him 5 times in the last 29 years. I missed him terribly at first. As I have grown in my Catholic faith I have come to realize that we cannot OUTGIVE God. I now think that his life is awesome and beautiful. I just want to encourage you and tell you that I will pray for you to accept and appreciate the special calling your daughter has received in her vocation. My three children all felt like they knew their uncle (the monk) as well or better than the uncles they saw occaisionally at family gatherings. Their three trips to California from the prairies of North Dakota will always be treasured moments of their childhood.

I wish Oprah and your paper would balance propoganda like this with the pain and suffering of the families who get to see their daughters but a few times a year. There are no phone calls, no emails - only letters twice a month (excpet during Adent and lent at which time there are none). Bully for you Mother Assumpta - I had to watch a National TV show to see my daughter, and yet you start each day with your blackberry. Would someone please, please look at religious life from a mother's perspective??
They don't know how this happened on the 13th anniversary?? Did anyone stop to think that billionaire Tom Monaghan phoned billionaire Oprah Winfrey and said "Hey O, can you do me a favor??" Oh my, how naive we have become.
It may be happy, happy, joy, joy at the convent but no one ever talks to those who have been left behind. I weep everyday of my life.

The Lord is great and mighty to be praised. Who is like you oh Lord and who understands your ways? I must confess that I had some doubts about Oprah, but the good Lord was fully in control as always. I learnt alot from this. Never to conclude things before it is done. We all can accept the fact that Oprah was very genuine in her show and was very charitable. The Lord used her to bring the message of true religious life to the world. The sisters were just wonderful. Very relaxed, confident and ready to share their joy to the world. I have read many comments here and some people like Clare Robbins and Donna from Chicago, Il. seem to be sad that the sisters are growing, instead of rejoicing with the church. The only advice I can give to us all is the advice of Gamaliel in the Acts of Apostles. If the new evangelization and the revival of the religious life that has begun in the church is of God, it will continue to grow and blosom. If it is out of human emotions, it will die out. My conviction is that The Sisters of Mary mother of the Eucharist and other such communities are responding to God's call to revive the religious live. As we can see, young people and those who are looking for a faithful community are going to them. I always say that the church does not lack vocations, but authentic witness to the priesthood and religious life. Many older orders spent too much time in the work of the Lord, but ignored the Lord of the work. Let us pray that we will all be faitful to God.

Dona from Chicago Il. Your comments speak for itself, it shows your shallow understanding of the Catholic Church. I think you should review the comments you posted. First of all you falsely accuse the church of sexism. Have you any idea what it means for something to be an essential part of a thing? I guess it was wrong choice of words. We are not talking about a male group here. Its women that we are giving thanks to God for. Women who understand the true and authentic progress for equality among human beings. If you are a catholic, then I would say you need to be sad about your comments. Even if your accusations were true, is it Oprah who now has the responsibility of balancing issues in your church? Can you imagine yourself suggesting that a non-catholic, a non-christian, who believes that Christianity is a feeling not a belief, to be the one to address issues in your church? I am by no means suggesting that we catholics are better or holier than them. However they have their beliefs and understanding of faith, so they have not place is addressing catholic issues. Your comments only goes to show how far off you and your fellows have gone in your faith. It is prescisely because we Catholics and christains have given our lives over to atheistic ideas and non catholic teachings, that is why we are where we are today. What is your understanding of the Religious life? Is it all about social justice, as wonderful as it is? Is the religious life all about doing or being? Think!!1

The habit of a religious woman is not a symbol of a wedding dress nor has it ever been a wedding dress. Historically, habits derive from the ordinary garb of women from whose village new orders arose. Village women wore the headdress of the area, and religious women did the same with the exception of simplying the garb. The Sisters of St. Joseph, for example, wore the garb of a widow from LePuy in France. They went about their active apostolate looking like widows. The updated religious garb/suit with symbolic identification finds its strong analogy in airline attendants whose garb identifies their airline and enables them to perform their service to customers.
What is good for the priest should be good enough for the religious woman. When in public, Carthusian or diocesan priest, or Dominican, all wear a black suit with Roman collar.

With all sincere charity, the Catholic Church is not sexist. It is ordered as ordained by God. And this order is understood and accepted by most, if not all faithful Catholics (both men and women)in the Church. It is something that is not easily understood by the secularistic society that we live in.

Praise the Lord! I happened to see the episode today on Oprah, I am not a Oprah fan but it was actually a good show. I know Oprah can be a little on the liberal side and new age wave but she was actually genuine and seemed "open minded" to the sisters. As for the sisters they were awesome, articulate and charitable. Of course the biggest question that came up was about chasity. They hand the Holy Spirit with them and answered very eliquiently. They are defientley living to serve, love and obey Christ and His Church. As a 38 yr. old father of 4 I can say that the world has hope with thriving communities as these sisters living their vows. We have in our Parish Sisters of SOLT's and they are the thriving just like the Sister of Mary and the Eurcharist. There is something to be said about the seminary's and convenants that are loyal to their vow's and Christ's Church and teachings. God Bless Sister's.

I'm excited about this opportunity for the sisters to speak about their calling in a world whose darkness can definitely benefit from their enlightenment. Opinions will certainly vary from message contents to host facilitative techniques, etc, etc. Either way, dialogue has already been ignited and will continue to be alive. That's good. We need to bring the Good News to the midst of the discussions. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.

This in response to Donna from Chicago, IL. When you saw "Contemporary" Dominicans who work for Social Justice are you talking about the rAdical Feminists Nuns who are disobedinece to the Church who will DIE OUT IN 10-20 YEARS?
Traditional CAtholic REligious Women orders are GROWING BECAUSE OF AUTHENTIC FEMINISM not some radical secularist views that Some Nuns expressed.
They are the future of Catholic Religious orders because Younger Catholics see the Crisis in REligious Life. Many Religious orders are confuse about their mission so they are dying out.

I am old enough to have been BLESSED to be educated as a boy by the Teresian Sisters back when vocations were not a problem and Catholic schools were graced by these beloved brides of Christ.
I have a deep love and appreciation of these wonderful women who wear the habit and give so much of themselves.
My daughter is a freshman at Franciscan University. This is her thirteenth year in Catholic school (not including pre K, K, etc). She has a priest this year for a teacher and it is the FIRST time in her life that she has had a teacher who was not a lay person. Thirteen years of Catholic school.
My first grade teacher was Sister Marie Annette. The very first teacher I ever had was a nun. Hopefully because of the good work of these sisters my grandkids will be blessed as I was and not have to wait until they are in college to be taught by such wonderful people.
For any good sisters reading this, you matter a great great deal, more than I can say. Thank you for your vocation. I love and pray daily for the wonderful consecrated brides of Christ.

"When they boast of their "problem" of not having enough room for all of their Sisters, it could be considered as very uncharitable, insofar as others, just as authentic, are hurting. I am very disappointed with these Sisters."
I rarely respond to people's comments on blogs like this, but I cannot ignore the above comments from Clare Robbins. Clare is not happy with the sisters even though she opened her comments with "I am happy". Her true feelings came out at the end. I wonder why she is angry or jealous of the sister's growth. I guess Clare Robbins is or was in the religious life. Many religious orders felt that turning way from the teachings and authority of the church and throwing away the religious habbit was a form of liberation. As a result they lost the true meaning of the religious life. These Dominican sisters of Mary and some others have stood by the church and continue to show the real face of religious life. Obviously the Lord has blessed them and this seems to be a problem for Clare Robbins. She talks about the sisters boasting of the number of vocations that they receive. There is nothing boastful in this. Its a reality for them. The truth which some religious orders have refused to accept is that the church is not lacking vocations. What the church lacks is true and authentic witness to the gospel and the essence of the religious life. Those who are faithful to their calling are growing. Young people want authentic witnessing, so they go to those who show it

Oprah has done more to undermine morality in America than anyone, and its all so subtle amid her personality, charity and "good works." The Dominicans may think of this as outreach, But the DANGER is that in APPEARING ON OPRAH, IT WILL GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE DOMINICANS ARE GIVING IN TO AN UNSPOKEN SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR OPRAH'S (PRO CHOICE, GAY MARRIAGE, ANTI-CATHOLIC, RADICAL FEMINIST ETC.)
