Fifteen Catholic Senators voted against Nelson Amendment
![]() Sen. Barbara Mikulski
Related articles:
.- A total of fifteen self-described Catholic Senators voted to table the Nelson-Hatch-Casey Amendment, which would have significantly restricted abortion funding from the Senate health care bill. The Amendment failed by a 54-45 vote on Tuesday. It was co-sponsored by Democrats Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania, who were joined by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. Senator Nelson is a Methodist, Sen. Hatch is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Sen. Casey is a Catholic. Besides Sen. Casey, Sen. Ted Kaufman of Delaware was the only other Catholic Democrat to vote against tabling the Nelson Amendment. Sen. Kaufman replaced Sen. Joseph Biden when he became the Vice-President of the United States. The Catholic Democratic Senators who voted against the Nelson Amendment were Patrick Leahy of Vermont, John Kerry and Paul Kirk of Massachusetts, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Richard Durbin of Illinois, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray of Washington state, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Mark Begich of Alaska. Sen. Kirk, appointed to replace Sen. Edward Kennedy, is the great-nephew of Archbishop of Boston William Henry Cardinal O'Connell. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the only Catholic Republican to vote to table the Nelson Amendment. In a Dec. 7 statement, Sen. Mikulski argued that the Nelson Amendment went “too far” and claimed the unamended bill is pro-life. “Making it a debate about abortion is misguided and wrong,” she said. In her view, the bill’s aims of providing universal access to health care, ending the denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions and strengthening Medicare are “pro-life principles.” She claimed that the Nelson Amendment’s allowance of a woman to buy an “abortion rider” to specially cover abortions was “like putting a scarlet ‘A’ on a woman’s forehead.” “No woman or family will buy such a plan - because no woman expects or intends to have an abortion,” Sen. Mikulski said. Jason Jones, founder of IAmWholeLife.com, said Sen. Mikulski’s statement showed a “fundamental misunderstanding.” “There is no social justice when the life of an innocent child is taken by abortion; abortion destroys a whole life and protects no one,” Jones continued. “The greatest threat to human dignity in the United States is the destruction of human life in the womb, not a lack of 'health care reform.” Jones urged Sen. Mikulski to take a pledge recognizing that all human rights are based on a respect for all human life, “especially at its earliest stages in the womb.” Subscriber comments:

Pat, what are you talking about? Roe v Wade was a Supreme Court decision, not a legislative bill. There is no legislation legalizing abortion - it came about at the hands of activist judges. Learn what you're talking about or shut your ignorant trap.

I feel the Catholic Church is being very hypocritical. I am a devout Catholic but I am sick and tired of the church blaming the democrats for passing Roe V Wade in 1976 to legalize abortion. What the Church won't tell you is the abortion bill was authored by Republican Senator Harry Blackmun and 8 of the Supremem Court Justices that voted to PASS the abortion bill were REPUBLICAN!! What did these pious republicans think would happen when abortion became legal? The abortion bill was authored by a republican, passed by Republican Justices and very much approved by Republican President Nixon. Now chew on that for a while!! Quit pushing your lie on to the democrats and fess up to your immoral sinful act!!

There are those "not too deeply-rooted Catholic" politicians who conveniently set aside their fragmented faith and sign on to POWER. I have found that politicians in general, have no interest in what their constituents have to say. How many of you, when writing to the politicians who represent you, get a form letter back? It will say something like this, "Thank you for your interest in (fill in the blank), BUT THESE ARE MY VIEWS"! In other words, don't bother me!

How can their priests be giving them the Eucharist under these conditions? I hope they repent and ask for forgiveness, or they are going to have a lot on their consciences. See what Warren wrote about Canada? That will be the US very soon. What Charles wrote about Archbishop Sheen is so true. I heard the bishop of Washington D.C. does not want to use the denial of communion or the possibility of excommunication to be used as a "political club" to bring wayward catholic politicians in line with church teaching. He said he is trying to "educate" them by being pastoral on church teaching. Make no mistake about it. Each and every one of these so-called Catholic senators will render an account of their actions to Christ on the the day of judgment. He will demand from them an explanation why they did not use their political gifts and power to protect and promote the lives of the unborn. Of course, no satisfactory answer will be possible; the question will be rhetorical coming as it will from the omniscient Lord; no excuses, no fine rationalizations will be accepted. These senators will see all the harm and death their decisions have caused to the most defenseless, but by then it will be too late. I exhort these senators to reflect on these words while they still have time:
"Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me." One wonders what Catholic politicians are afraid of! Perhaps they fear that acting on their faith's moral precepts would be perceived as pressure to conform to the Pope? Or maybe their smarter than we think. Over the years I've read plenty of online comments that claim Christianity and Islam are "twins" and that the religio-political ideology of Islam is no different than Christian political influence.

It is easy to picture these 15 Catholic Senators faced with having to sign the Oath of Supremacy in England in the 16th century. Their thinking might be along these lines: "Have you seen how the Mass will be? Why, it's the same. And they will wear the same vestments and keep all the churches. And all decisions can be made right here in England. We'll still believe in Purgatory and the saints. There'll be no difference. It's going to be the same, you'll see. I don't know what the fuss is all about. Just about everybody is going to sign the oath. Just a few rightwing extremists, like our Lord Chancellor, aren't signing. It's a matter of supporting our king."
This way they keep their heads and perhaps lose their souls. Not unlike keeping now their party loyalty, killing the unborn, and still perhaps losing their souls.

So, why should another legislator who votes now against something Casey sponsors, be similarly shunned?

We have had the same problem in Canada for years. A series of "catholic" Prime Ministers and Supreme Court judges have destroyed every protection for the unborn. To this day, we have no laws of any kind restricting abortion. We live in a lawless state. We all, laity and clergy alike, must remind our brothers and sisters that, if they refuse to live as faithful Catholics, they should reform. Yes, we all fall from time to time, and everyone deserves the opportunity to be reconciled to God and Church. However, it is another thing entirely when a person obstinately opposes the will of God and claims they are being faithful. The despicable actions committed by these politicians deserve unequivocal public condemnation. There is no justification for a sunshine policy that attempts to appease culture-of-death politicians. To whom much is given, much is demanded. Our legislators in Congress are at the pinnacle of our judicial system. They bear much responsibility before God for the laws they enact. I would not want to be in their shoes at this moment...or, for that matter, when they face God....
The very first Catholic Catechism, written about 60 A.D., by St. Clement of Rome, who accompanied St. Paul on his missions, is still in existence. It clearly states, "YOU MUST NOT ABORT A FETUS. THAT IS KILLING."
Padre Pio, now declared a saint (to no one's surprise - we already knew), repeatedly chastised women who'd had abortions but did not confess them (since he had the gift of reading souls). His motive in doing so was "to bring them to repentance", which he said was then their salvation. So this is NOT a light matter.
In Medjugorje, Our Lady said abortion is the sin that offends God the most.
So "Catholic" Senators voting for abortion? I don't think so. They are not Catholics. To be learned from this is "How do we all fall short of what God is asking of us?" and while we're praying for these Senators (and that is also our duty), then we must work to improve those areas where we ourselves fall short. When we see such things happening, do we do as the Cure of Ars and offer God sacrifices and fervent prayers? Let's begin in love to cry out, "Eternal Father, we offer you the Body and Blood of Your Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for these sins! Have mercy on us!" Pray.

What right is our government protecting?????????"Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death".

Why are not these 15 so called Catholics excommunitated and denied Holy Comunion? Our Bishops need to take a stand.

And the home Bishops of these Catholic Senators sit uselessly. So what does the average Catholic see, that you can choose what you want on the Faith and consider yourself in good standing with the Church. Of course they will say we are trying to work with them.....abortion has been around for what 40 years with such action???

Please remember them in your prayers and then do your part to vote them out of office at first opportunity for the sake of their souls.

When will Catholic bishops show the episcopal spine to respond by excommunicating those who give public scandal by supporting abortion as a matter of public policy? There should be no question in anybody's mind: somebody who supports dicing, salinating, dissecting, or leaving unborn babies to die in their own blood in surgical buckets is not somebody living the Christ-like life that reception of the Eucharist presupposes.

These people aren't Catholics... they are "Catholic" in name only. These people have chosen secularism and liberalism over Our Lord and his Catholic Church; you can't be a leftist secular liberal and be a true Catholic. These "Catholic" Senators are heretics and apostates and should be excommunicated along with the rest of these leftist liberal pseudo "Catholics"!!
