Giuliani says he will not challenge Pope on abortion-Communion
Related articles:
.- Rudy Giuliani refused to challenge Pope Benedict XVI, who said last week that Catholic politicians who favor abortion have excommunicated themselves and should not take Communion. The former mayor of New York is pro-abortion and said his differences with the Catholic Church are between him, God and his confessor, not the Pope. Giuliani is running for the leadership of the Republican Party. "I don't get into debates with the Pope," Giuliani told reporters. "Issues like that for me are between me and my confessor. ... I'm a Catholic and that's the way I resolve those issues, personally and privately. Giuliani resorted to the common false idea that there can be a split between what one believes in public and what one legislates for the sake of the common good. "That's what religion is all about — it's something that's between you and your conscience and God and then whoever your spiritual advisers are," he was quoted as saying. The Giuliani campaign Wednesday night deflected questions about Giuliani's spiritual advisers and whether he takes Communion, saying that those are private issues. Subscriber comments:

The Church will not and should not drop this issue for any amount of time. Murdering unborn children is an abomination and to support it is against the ideals of this country. That's my big problem with Giuliani right now. He supports the rule of law (as he says) but he supports a woman's right to choose? Would he support a man who chooses to kill someone else in cold blood? That is just as much a matter of choice. The fact is, there is an overriding ideal of protecting life and that must be respected above any consideration of "choice". I am waiting for Giuliani to step up and start REALLY supporting the rule of law in this country by opposing this legalized murder. Bravo to the Pope and Catholics who stand firm against pro-abortion candidates. If you do not share Catholic beliefs, you are not Catholic - and are not in communion with the Church anyway. Period.

Giuliani is a public figure because he is a famous politician and not because he is representing the Catholic Church or advising Catholics on how to live their lives or even the difference between right and wrong. This is a free country and not a religious state. Even God has given us free will. The Pope and anyone else can have their say on the matter and as far as I am concerned even Mr Giuliani may have his say and respond to attacks on him and this matter. I mostly agree with what Giuliani said and commend him for saying this in such a very eloquent way as to not draw anymore negative attention to the Church. I don't think I would have done as good a job as he did in handling the questions. Our Catholic Church has been hurt severely enough with all the countless cases of priests involved with sex crimes over such an extended period of time and the cover up of it all by the Church at the highest levels. The leaders of the Church at this time do not look so good in the eyes of the rest of the world and do not set a good example of what it means to be Catholic. Of course the Pope can tell him what he can and can't do as a Catholic and even excommunicate him personally if he decides to do so because the Church is a private organization and not public or our government. I think it would be best for all if the leaders of the Church drop the matter altogether and forget about it. This issue now has stirred my interest about voting for Giuliani for President. He is a good Man.
