Judge rules against Christian banned from Eastern Michigan counseling program

.- Attorneys of the Alliance Defence Fund (ADF) are preparing to appeal a federal judge's decision that a Christian student's beliefs about homosexuality were an acceptable grounds for her dismissal from a graduate program in counseling at Eastern Michigan University. Julea Ward enrolled in the university's counseling practicum course in January 2009, and was assigned to a client who sought assistance with a homosexual relationship. Ward considered herself unable to assist the client under the circumstances, due to her own moral and religious beliefs, and was advised by her supervisor to reassign the client. Eastern Michigan University, however, responded to the situation by initiating disciplinary procedures against Ward, involving a “remediation” program. According to ADF, the “remediation” amounted to an ultimatum: Ward would either “see the error of her ways” and change her beliefs about sexual morality in order to encourage her clients in same-sex relationships, or be dismissed from the counseling program. The university argued that she broke both school policy and the American Counseling Association code of ethics. But Ward maintained that faculty members questioned her in an “inappropriate and intrusive” manner regarding her Christian faith before formally expelling her from the program. She appealed to the dean of EMU's College of Education, who upheld the decision. In April 2009, with the assistance of ADF, she brought a lawsuit against the university. In March of this year, a district court in Michigan ruled that those professors responsible for Ward's expulsion could be held liable for discriminatory actions against her. This week, however, the court issued a summary judgment in favor of the EMU professors. ADF maintains that the university's policy is both personally discriminatory and legally unconstitutional. The professors' real aim, they say, was “to make all students conform to the views promoted within their schools” on “some of the most important and controversial social and moral issues of our day.” David French, senior counsel for the ADF's regional center in Tennessee and an attorney for Julea Ward, said that the academic freedom and constitutional rights of his client and others were at risk in the wake of Monday's decision. “Christian students,” he said, “shouldn't be expelled for holding to and abiding by their beliefs.” French also stressed the unprecedented nature of the court's summary judgment. “To reach its decision, the court had to do something that's never been done in federal court: uphold an extremely broad and vague university speech code.” Additionally, he pointed out that Ms. Ward had not personally refused the client her assistance, but merely followed the advice of her supervisor as to how her dilemma should be resolved. Declaring his intention to move forward with an appeal, Mr. French expressed his confidence on Tuesday that his client would be vindicated. “We trust,” he said, that “the Sixth Circuit will understand the constitutional issues involved in this case.” Subscriber comments:

Im surprised the medical community is so blind not to call same sex what it is---Gender Idenity Disorder.
Remember the story about the "Emperor's New Clothes"? Does this give creedence to many distrubing nuances today?
We love our brothers and sisters who suffer from same sex attraction but we do not have to go along with it.

The judge in this case, as well as the university authorities, have all been intimidated by the ever-expanding homosexual agenda. Homosexuality may be deemed a disorder without reference to one's religious principles. The answer to homosexualists, and those frightened by them, must be delivered in secular terms.

This is a pretty good summary of the case. Some key facts that many accounts (and the judge) get wrong:
1. She didn't refuse to counsel gays about anything but their same-sex relationships.
2. She couldn't counsel gays about same-sex relationships at EMU because EMU required her to affirm them (presenting alternatives is forbidden).
3. Affirmation of same-sex relationships is NOT a requirement of the ACA Code of Ethics.
4. The ACA Code of Ethics and Ms. Ward's assigned textbook both encourage referral when there is a personal belief that gets in the way of counseling.
5. Ms. Ward asked her professor what to do in the case at issue and was told to refer the student.

Let us all pray for this woman and the ADF - and try to remember that oft-misquoted but well-known poem - "They came for the Jews, but I wasn't Jewish, so I didn't care. Then they came for the Unionists, I didn't belong to a Union, so I didn't care . . . then they came for me, but no one was left to care." Julea is standing up for us all! Pray, pray and watch!

Pray for her and all Catholics (like me!) who are entering clinical psychology/counseling/social work fields. My wife in her undergrad social work class had to endure an hour of "diversity" when her professor bad-mouthed the Catholic church's opposition to "woman's rights" when talking about feminist social work theory. Tolerance of other races, alternative life styles, modern view points, but not of Christianity (much less Catholic Christianity). St. Thomas More pray for us!

What is truly ironic about all this is that the very same paragraph in the ACA code of ethics that prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation also prohibits discrimination on the grounds of religion. Why doesn't someone point that out?

By profession I am an HIV Prevention Specialist for the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health. Part of my job involves doing HIV testing and counseling; I also teach other social workers and health care professionals how to do the same. The definition of HIV prevention counseling is to assist clients in making behavior changes that can reduce their risk for acquiring or transmitting HIV. But counseling of ANY kind relies on certain skills and concepts, and one of the three important "Counseling Concepts" is this:
MANAGE YOUR OWN DISCOMFORT.
Anyone who does HIV prevention counseling is invariably going to be confronted with sexual behaviors and drug use behaviors that make us uncomfortable. But if we are unable to manage that discomfort, the counseling session will not be effective. If one of my clients feels that I'm being judgmental and sanctimonious, rather than caring and empathetic, that's going to drive a big barrier between me and that person.
Julea Ward is entitled to her views about homosexuality. But COUNSELING is the wrong profession for her, as any professional counselor will have you know.

I guess freedom of Religion which is found in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution doesn't apply to this woman or any other person who doesn't adhere to the political correctness of the leftist, Masonic and secular New world order! It looks like the pro-homosexual and Anti-Christian secular, Masonic, leftwing, progressivist liberals who have infiltrated and who now control most of academia, the courts, the media and politicians domestically and internationally are leading the USA and the world toward outright atheistic Socialism/Communism which eventually will lead to a One world Government lead by the people who I have mentioned above. The way things are going in the USA and around the world it won't be long until we have something resembling a "ministry of love". To some this all sounds like a "conspiracy theory" and something that is far fetched. Yet take a good long look at what is going on around the world, and how it has changed just in the last fifty years, where Christianity, natural law and Divine law were adhered to and obeyed in most countries, to now Catholics and other traditional minded people being marginalized, ridiculed and silenced. Ask anyone who lived in Eastern Europe when Communism was prevalent, they will tell you the first people and the first institution the leftists targeted was the Catholic Church, and other people of faith who didn't adhere to the communist and progressivist party line. Wake up people, this is all happening in front of us.

Forcing someone with an opposing view into a re-education program? - welcome to North Korea.
How long before the day arrives in the U.S. and Canada when christians will be rounded up and forced into re-education programs (camps) in order to help us see the "error of our ways"?
The gay lobbyists and their fascist allies in academia do not merely want tolerance of homosexual acts but approval as well. There is no satisfying a lobby or agenda that embodies an insatiable desire.
A victory for Ms. Ward will be a victory for all. Her conscientious objection merits the respect of all who value religious freedom as an inalienable right.
Stay away from the liberal 9th Circuit!
