Mexican states with pro-life constitutions now at 16
Related articles:
.- The State Congress of Oaxaca has passed a constitutional reform making it the 16th Mexican state to protect human life from abortion. The reform guarantees that human life will be protected from conception to natural death. A press release from the Congress indicated 31 votes in favor of the changes to the State constitution granting legal protection to the unborn. “The inhabitants of the State shall enjoy all of the rights and freedoms enshrined in this Constitution, without distinction of origin, race, color, sex, language, creed, public opinion, social condition or position,” the new text reads. State representatives said that the new measure is intended to strengthen the family, where respect for life begins. Without respect for the fundamental right to life, they said, “the rest of individual rights could not exist.” The dignity of the human person shall be defended, especially that of the women and children of Oaxaca, they continued, as “with the new constitutional norms the rights of the mother and the unborn are not in conflict, nor is one place above the other. Both complement each other,” they stressed. The reform allows abortion in cases of rape, life of the mother or fetal deformation. The other 15 states that have passed pro-life reform are: Querétaro, Baja California, Chihuahua, Campeche, Colima , Puebla, Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Guanajuato, Yucatán, Sonora, Morelos and San Luis Potosí. It's better than what they had, but Catholics should not be satisfied with maintaining the exceptions in this amendment. It can't stay in place unless it consistently recognizes the inviolable right to life from conception.
Catechism, paragraph 2270: "Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person—among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life."
"The constitutional amendment should clearly establish that, from conception onward, the unborn child is a human person in the terms of the Constitution...The constitutional amendment should restore the basic protection for this human right [to life] to the unborn, just as it is provided to all other persons in the United States...I could not endorse any wording that would allow for direct abortion." --Humberto Sousa Cardinal Medeiros of Boston, testifying alongside John Cardinal Cody, John Cardinal Krol, and Timothy Cardinal Manning before a Senate Subcommittee, on behalf of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, March 1974

This is good news. Of the 32 states (inlcuiding the nation's capital, Mexico City), 16 now have legal protection for the unborn, their mothers and whole families. That means half the country, and lets pray that God will aide us in keeping up with this struggle to save and the protect the innocent. Also I would like to add that the voting results of the proposed reform were 31 in favor and 6 against it. Those 6 votes were made by the leftist parties of PRD and Convergencia. It's not my intention to point fingers, but it is also important to know which parties and politicias are fighting for and against life.
