Rev. John Hagee with his wife Diana

.- The Republican presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, has been garnering attention in the media with his surge in political polls. However, a campaign stop this Sunday by Huckabee at a mega-church whose pastor sees Hitler as linked to the Catholic Church, could soon steal the spotlight.

According to Mike Huckabee’s campaign website, the controversial stop at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas will take place this Sunday, December 23. He will speak at the church's two Sunday services at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m.

The Catholic League’s president, Bill Donahue, told CNA that the pastor of the church, Rev. John Hagee, is militantly anti-Catholic.

As the senior pastor of Cornerstone, Rev. Hagee is best known for his “End-Time” writing but also focuses on bringing evangelical Protestants and Jews together.

The Catholic League asserts that John Hagee has another goal as well, “slandering the Catholic Church.”

John Hagee’s Anti-Catholic Record

It’s not hard to find evidence that Rev. Hagee does not think highly of Catholics or the Catholic Church. In a video discussing the biblical book of Revelation, John Hagee suggests the Pope is the anti-Christ, and that the Catholic Church is "The Beast" (17:30 and following) mentioned in the book.

Another cause for concern is the pastor’s latest book “Jerusalem Countdown”, which has recently been revised and updated. “Though most of his rantings in this book are directed at Muslims, he just can't help but take another shot at Catholicism,” says Donahue.

“In one chapter, ‘Centuries of Mistreatment,’ he misrepresents the history of the Catholic Church so badly,” explains Donahue, “that it would be hard for any anti-Catholic bigot to beat.”

Hagee sees anti-Semitism as being born out of the Catholic Church.

“Anti-Semitism in Christianity began with the statements of the early church fathers, including Eusebius, Cyril, Chrysostom, Augustine, Origen, Justin, and Jerome .... This poisonous stream of venom came from the mouths of spiritual leaders to virtually illiterate congregants, sitting benignly in their pews, listening to their pastors. They labeled the Jews as 'the Christ killers, plague carriers, demons, children of the devil, bloodthirsty pagans who look for an innocent child during the Easter week to drink his blood, money hungry Shylocks, who are deceitful as Judas was relentless,'" writes Hagee.

At another point, Rev. Hagee says, "The Roman Catholic Church, which was supposed to carry the light of the gospel, plunged the world into the Dark Ages.... The Crusaders were a motley mob of thieves, rapists, robbers, and murderers whose sins had been forgiven by the pope in advance of the Crusade ....The brutal truth is that the Crusades were military campaigns of the Roman Catholic Church to gain control of Jerusalem from the Muslims and to punish the Jews as the alleged Christ killers on the road to and from Jerusalem."

"The Spanish Inquisition was perhaps the most cynical plot in the black history of Catholicism,” relates Hagee, “[it was] aimed at expropriating the property of wealthy Jews and converts in Spain for the benefit of the royal court and the Roman Catholic Church."

The influential preacher’s historical narrative even goes so far as to depict Adolf Hitler as being taught anti-Semitism by the Catholic Church. "Adolf Hitler attended a Catholic school as a child and heard all the fiery anti-Semitic rantings from Chrysostom to Martin Luther.”

According to Mr. Hagee, the Church even implicitly supported the Nazi dictator. “When Hitler became a global demonic monster, the Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII never, ever slightly criticized him. Pope Pius XII, called by historians 'Hitler's Pope,' joined Hitler in the infamous Concordat of Collaboration, which turned the youth of  Germany over to Nazism, and the churches became the stage background for the bloodthirsty cry, 'Pereat Judea'.... In all of his [Hitler's] years of absolute brutality, he was never denounced or even scolded by Pope Pius XII or any Catholic leader in the world. To those Christians who believe that Jewish hearts will be warmed by the sight of the cross, please be informed—to them it's an electric chair," wrote the pastor.

Bill Donahue did not rule out debate with John Hagee and added that “as long as the debate is civil, that is all that matters.” Yet, the Catholic leader does not view Hagee's teaching in that light, but rather as instruction that “clearly distorts Catholic teachings, or misrepresents its [the Church’s] history”.

CNA attempted to reach the Huckabee campaign for comment, but a phone call and an email were not returned before press time.

I do agree that catholicism is un biblical to begin with, I do not want your criticism, but your education to see this for yourselves. Any person, who says they are a certain type of christian is heracy in of it's self. God is one, not protestant, catholic, or baptist. He is his ways, peace, love, forgiveness, and to focus on the mental interpretation of the bible and not what it means to serve god, is to seperate yourself from him already.

I have no problem saying tha Mitt Romney continues to lie and change position on the issues.

We as a Nation, deserve a President that is honest and for the people. Like Abe Lincoln was.

It is up to us to choose the person we want for president. We all kow that media bias is controlling who people vote for. And some of the mainstream media is getting paid very well for what hey report.

Catholic.org put a great article that supports Mike Huckabee and talks about the un fairness that is happening in this race. The article is called "Let Huckabee speak" It is front page! Please go and read it. Not only are Protestants and Evangelicals supporting Mike, so are Catholics. As well as people who live with morals an values, common Americans are choosing Mike Huckabee. Please look carefuly at the candidates.

Huckabee Disavows Anti-Catholic Sentiments At Church Where He Will Speak
by: Jay Wagner
Saturday (12/22) at 22:20 PM

During an interview at his last campaign stop in Iowa before Christmas, Republican front-runner Mike Huckabee disavowed anti-Catholic comments and teachings made by the senior pastor of a Texas church where he will be speaking on Sunday.
Huckabee wrapped up an ambitious pre-Christmas tour of Iowa on Saturday with four appearances in the Fifth Congressional District, home to more than half of the state's registered Republicans. He returns to Iowa after celebrating Christmas with his family in Arkansas. But on the way home, Huckabee will make a stop in San Antonio where he will speak to members of the Cornerstone Church.

Cornerstone is one of the nation's largest churches, with nearly 17,000 members. John C. Hagee, senior pastor at the church, has told his congregation in the past that the Beast referred to in the Bible is actually the Catholic Church and the so-called Anti-Christ is the Pope.

"I have to say that I don't agree with those teachings," Huckabee told the Iowa Independent following a speech in Sheldon. "Several members of my staff are Catholic and have marched shoulder to shoulder many times in pro-life marches with people of the Catholic faith."

Every person has learned of Nazism at some point in their lives. Apparently, if no has the brains to remember, not even the Allies were aware of the Nazi attrocities until after the war. How can the Pope Pius be blamed for supporting Hitler? If we Americans were not aware, how could he have been aware either? I also believe history has been rewritten a few times (e.g. Henry VIII) to portray the Church as evil to raise support against it. It is happening once again. We Catholics do not show up at mass to slander against our brothers. Slandering may happen elsewhere in this country's faiths, but I have not attended a mass where we spend a sermon denouncing others. Church is meant to honor and learn about God, not spend the time denouncing others. I apoligize for my anger, but there is much ignorance circulating nowadays.

Mike Huckabee may be a pro-life candidate for president, but he is extremely divisive. As a Catholic, I am offended by this appearance.

Furthermore Huckabee engaged in immoral anti-Catholic push polling to sink the candidacy of Senator Brownback (a faithful Catholic). If it is Huckabee vs. any Democrat I will hold my nose and vote for Huckabee, but I would prefer ANY other pro-life candidate.

This is a hit piece on the Rev John Hagee, and only on Huckabee by association by speaking at the man's church. I am Cathoilic and seek to perfect my journey, not bash someone elses. Although defending Catholocism against outright lies is essential, I don't think there is any mileage in associating this Reverands opinions to Huckabee's here.
And regarding Peter Calabrese's comments, which is the only posted comment, Mike Huckabee was a pastor before being a Governor for 10+ years, I don't think you'd give Romney a hard time for speaking at a Rotary Club, or other business related organization. As a country we need to get past this "religion is forebidden in politics" atmospere. This nation is not secular, so don't march to their drum beat. If a politician says something that makes you squirm, then pray to figure out why you squirm, not to shut the messanger up.

A presidential candidate has to speak to a lot of people, and I think it's silly if an individual's views are attributed to that candidate just because he speaks at a particular venue. Gov. Huckabee is certainly not anti-Catholic. The two top people in his campaign are Catholic : Ed Rollins and Chip Saltsman. I'm Catholic, and I'm still voting for him.

Chip Saltsman, Huckabee's campaign manger is a lifelong devoted Catholic. Huckabee is very much supportive of Catholics and Mike Huckabee has many friends who are Catholics. It is completely unfair to taint Mike Huckabee with the complaints Bill has about John Hagee's beliefs. I'd like to see Mike invited to more Catholic functions. So how about it? Please call him and schedule them! He can't come barging in, he needs to be INVITED.

Call (515) 288-3708

Please don't let a book by John Hagee prevent that. Mike Huckabee did not write or endorse the book, nor will his speaking there endorse it in any way.

I have tuned in to John Hagee on occasion, and have enjoyed some of his Bible Studies. Since I'm only an occasional watcher, I haven't picked up on his anti-Catholic beliefs.

What do I do when someone is "anti" on my faith? I don't focus on the negative. I try to find areas where there is agreement.

I remember in the early seventies, the "Charismatic Movement" came into the spotlight. There were a lot of people out there who were "anti" that movement.

However, when Billy Graham put on his last Crusade in the Charlotte, NC area in the eighties, Catholics and Charismatics and Baptists and Pentecostlas and Lutherans and whatever worked side by side. It was an AWESOME experience!
We had differences, but there were areas we could agree.

I am not a one issue voter. Mike has appeal across all of the issues. I honestly don't think that this will cause a mass exodus away from Mike by Catholics. I hope those of the Catholic faith are "better than that".

Remember: Offense is a choice!

Regardless, the president and/or our future president will be the president of the whole United States, not just Catholics and not just secular people either. The president is the president of all races, religions, and creeds.

Mike Huckabee or any other candidate should speak at any and all who want to hear what he has to say, whether it's a church or a university or even a social event.

Mike Huckabee is not endorsing the church, he's only speaking there. Just like he spoke at the synogogue and just like he would speak at a Catholic function.

He's not rich like Romney where he can just set up places to speak. He has to go where he is invited.

Instead of complaining, WHY DON'T YOU CONTACT HIM AND ASK HIM TO SPEAK AT ONE OF YOUR FUNCTIONS? I am sure he would attend.

Good! I'm glad. I think religion is an important individual function. I am a Christian who supports Ron Paul. "Let what is Ceasar's remain with Ceasar." Paul will rule with true Christian authority to make the US the bright shining beacon on a hill. How ca true Christians vote for anything else. Christ was not an interventionist or he would have used his power and the Lord to overcome the Devil and the famine when he was tempted. Jesus denied the temptation of power. Paul is the only politician who would deny the temptation of power. WWJD.

This is pretty shocking if for no other consideration than that of politics. Iowa and New Hampshire have 25% and 35% practicing Catholics respectively. By speaking at Mr. Hagee's venue, Mr. Huckabee is giving credence to a man who has stated that the Pope is the anti-Christ and that Jesus was not the Messiah.

I agree with Peter; no candidate should be delivering Sunday morning sermons particularly one who claims to be such a devoted follower of Christ. Acts 5:2 and the story of Ananias should come to mind.

As a registered Republican and Roman Catholic few of the candidates met my Christian ethics, so I was going to vote for Mike Huckabee in the upcoming election. To my dismay I see Mr. Huckabee is entertaining a well known Anti-Catholic bigot John Hagee, due to this I have to reconsider my candidates in the up coming Florida election.

Huckabee is totally wrong in speaking at any church to further his political career, least of all Hagee's church. Hagee is the epitome of prejudice and non-Christianity. No one who professes to be a Christian, let alone a Christian leader, could spew such profanity against another Christian, namely Catholics. He is one of the ministers that is causing great division among Christians. Mr. Hagee wake up to reality,we were taught to love one another not hate one another.

I totally support the view of Peter Calabrese, far to many ministers are using snippits of bible passages to support their own political agenda. Since politics has been corrupted, we should be wary of partnering our political views with scripture. I want to hear and be with Christ when I attend church, and not become bombared with the ministers political agenda

How does Mr. Hagee feel about the twenty-first century evangelical christian crusade in the Middle East, which has slaughtered a million innocent people in a country that never attacked us and never intended to do so?

Apparently, he has nothing against baptist minister Mike Huckabee's willingness for a pre-emptive nuclear attack against Iran, in which radioactive fallout could easily slaughter millions more.

Eusebius accused the Jews of his day with crimes committed three hundred years earlier. Hagee accuses the Catholics of our day with the crimes commited by Eusebius . . . who lived 1700 years ago. Am I the only one to notice a logical disconnect?

Those of you reading this had better check your genealogies for the past two thousand years, because if Rev. Mike gets elected, you could do time for something your great-great-great-grandfather did!

You're right, Peter. But you have to take it in perspective. Hagee is nothing but a political figure, he preaches false doctrine and seemingly his only reason to exist is to lobby politicians on behalf of Jews and Israel. The Gospel comes second to that and for him to use his church as a political forum instead of a place meant to worship God should come as no surprise.

Gov. Huckabee's disordered religiosity is distracting Christians non-Christians away from perfectly acceptable presidential candidates who speak of universal principles and values. Moreover, voters are irritated by the Governor's fundamentalistic Christianity that is openly anti-Catholic. Finally, if non-Catholic Christians were leaning toward Christian Catholicism, they would turn away because of his maudlin advertising of a challenging and courageous faith tradition.

As a protestant I would like to pay tribute to John Crythostomon who Challenged the wealth and prosperity gospel at that time. Also to the many who martyred themselves in defense of the Christian faith such as Ignatius Bishop of Antioch (107 AD)Polycarp Bishop of Smyrna (156 AD)Justin Martyr (165 AD)Leonidas the father of Origen (202 AD)Perpetua and Felicitas (203 AD) The results of persecution included the spread of Christianity,as Tertullian writes “The blood of the Martyrs became the seed of the Church.” Such martyrdom also refinined and purified the church. This also resulted in the growth and maturity of Christians. The testimony of Martyrs and others who suffered produced
apologetic writings in defense of the faith. It is unfortanate that Hagee is unaware of such great men and women of faith.

As a protestant, I have to say our brethren John Hagee is misguded regarding his views of the early church, these saints were no more anti-Catholic than Christ. His veiws are the result of dispensationalism. I hope that Catholics realize that not all protestant hold Hagee's despensational or anticatholic views. I thank CNA for the artical as I will now hold Huckabee to greater scrutinany as I would anyone who associates with Hagee

Whether you are a candidate for the Republican or Democrat Party you should not be speaking in Church on Sunday morning - at least in a political role. Sunday morning is for the proclamation of the Gospel not the political coopting of that precious time for the people of God. I don;t like when the Democrats get to use the pulpit on Sunday morning and I won't second it for Huckabee regardless of whether it is an anti-Catholic church. TO cede the pulpit on Sunday morning is an endorsement that i not proper to the Church
