Minnesota Catholic school revokes honors for legislator over abortion

.- A Catholic high school in Minnesota has denied honors for a state legislator who is a candidate for governor, citing his active support for “pro-choice issues.” Holy Angels Academy in Richfield, Minnesota had considered alumnus State Rep. Paul Thissen as a nominee for its Activities Hall of Fame, which recognizes those who “through their citizenship and achievements, have brought honor to themselves, their school and the community.” Thissen, a 1985 graduate of the school, was to accept the honor at a January ceremony, the Star Tribune reports. However, the school’s president called Thissen days before the ceremony and asked him to withdraw his name from consideration. He refused and was told the day before the ceremony he would be stripped of the award because of his support for abortion as a state legislator of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. According to the school, an alumnus’ record at the academy constitutes the primary criteria for the award but the nominating committee also considers activities and professional life afterward. Thissen’s legislative actions contradicted Catholic teaching. "Mr. Thissen had an outstanding activities career at Holy Angels and has had much success beyond," the school's president, Jill Reilly said in a statement. However, she reported that the nominating committee was not aware of his voting record regarding “right-to-life issues.” “As a result of Mr. Thissen's public and professional position to actively support pro-choice issues, with regret, AHA has chosen not to include Mr. Thissen among this year's inductees,” Reilly said, according to the Star Tribune. Thissen reportedly wrote a letter to Reilly citing his record as a proponent of health care coverage for children and as an advocate for the poor. He cited his participation in football, basketball and track while at the academy and also noted his position as president of the student council. “It's not the biggest thing in the world, but the school was and is important to me," Thissen told the Star Tribune. “Many of my closest friends, even today, were my friends back then. The recognition meant a lot. “When I heard about this, I really was disappointed, not so much because of the award, but because the award was for something that had nothing to with my position on giving women the choice of what to do during a pregnancy.” Thissen is reportedly a regular Mass attendee and has been a frequent contributor to the school. Explaining its decision, Holy Angels Academy referred to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document “Catholics in Political Life.” The 2004 document states that those in public life who do not work to correct abortion laws are “guilty of cooperating in evil and sinning against the common good.” Dennis McGrath, spokesman for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, told the Star Tribune that the archdiocese did not intervene in the matter, calling it “purely a decision by the school.” Subscriber comments:

As a 1982 graduate of AHA I also applaud your courage in making an important point. Elected officials and their formation matter when it comes to affirming life.
Keep up the good work AHA and we will pray that Rep. Thissen will consider his need to help support life by through his elected position. Tim Class of '82 CoStar

Kudos to the Minnesota School upon taking a positive stand on the evil of abortion.
We have to stand up and condemn the guilty.

Thank God this school has stood up tall. Why didn't the Archdioces of St. Paul and Minneapolis stand just as tall and back up AHA? Instead they say it "was a decision by the school" Where are our Shepards? We need leaders in our church! Be proud Holy Angels, be very proud!

Congratulations to Holy Angels Academy. You have made us all proud of your courageous action. You by your example have taught your students the greatest lesson they will ever learn in life. You have demonstrated that knowledge of the faith is only the first step towards their real goal which is to make their faith their way of life. God Love you all,--Quinn

Mr. Thissen is the tip of the iceberg. How about Ted Kennedy, Nancy Palossi, Joe Biden and many others; when will the Church speak out against them?

For a politician to win and maintain his office he must reflect the will of his constituents. You have allowed the Republican Party to thrive for the past decade because of the abortion issue. The results for the poor have proven disaterous. (In another article in this issue it is argued that the Republicans are being chided for their ideological objections which harms the poor who desperately need the help.) If you really want to eliminate abortions, and help the poor, address the people. When sufficient numbers are convinced, the politicians will follow. Making grandstand plays by publicly going after high profile individuals might make you feel good, like you are really doing your job - but you are not.

It's about time that our words took action..It's commendable that Mr Thissen is so involved in his alma mater and works for issues that are pro children..hopefully he will see this action in the light of Christ and not become bitter...hopefully he will rethink his position on abortion and now work for those rights of the unborn.

I applaud the school for making this decision. My only further hope would be that the St.Paul/Minneapolis diocese would add the following to their statement - that it was "purely a decision by the school...and we fully support their decision..."

As a Catholic school teacher in Minnesota, a state that routinely votes for and supports pro-abortion politicians, I applaud Holy Angels Academy, and its leadership.
How refreshing to see a Catholic institution resolve to be fully Catholic, and to take a stand for the human rights of the unborn. Mr. Thissen might be eligible for reconsideration if he would change his heart, and recognize that unborn children are utter innocents, waiting to be born and loved and cared for. They are fully human, and are the ultimate dream and miracle of our God, not "choices."

While it is regretable that the committee did not consider his public record prior to the nomination they did the right thing in withdrawing his name. Despite his reasoning that he is an advocate for the poor, Mr. Thissen has a warped view of what that means as a Catholic. He is not a good representative of what a Catholic politician should be! The school, at risk of losing his financial contributions and causing contraversy, has done the right thing. Thank God for people of character and values who are willing to be right instead of politically correct!

A moral-ethical decision to be commended and maybe the former intended recipient learned that he must effectively fight to bring his Catholic Faith into the public square. That's what receiving the Eucharist in Mass is all about....for Jesus--we His body, doing what He would do in the world no matter to cost to personal success.

Good on you guy's at Holy Angels - if more of our schools would set this example maybe the Catholic Church can get somewhere in establishing it's definition of good and evil.

Holy Angels Academy acted properly in this matter. It is another and most sorry circumstance that the Archdiocese avoided an affirmative statement in support of the School.
