Obama's pro-abortion executive order creates first clash with Vatican

.- The first sign of Vatican disappointment with the Obama administration came on Saturday, when Holy See officials reacted to the President’s executive order reversing the Mexico City policy, thus making federal money available to promote abortion internationally.

Obama signed the executive order canceling the eight-year-old restrictions on Friday, the third day of his presidency.

In an interview published Saturday in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Archbishop Rino Fisichella said that "among the many good things that he could have done, Barack Obama instead has chosen the worst."

"What is important is to know how to listen... without locking oneself into ideological visions with the arrogance of a person who, having the power, thinks they can decide on life and death," he added.

"If this is one of the first acts of President Obama, with all due respect, it seems to me that the path towards disappointment will have been very short," Archbishop Fisichella said.

He concluded by pointing out that "I do not believe that those who voted for him (Obama) took into consideration ethical themes, which were astutely left aside during the election debate. The majority of the American population does not take the same position as the president and his team."

Another Vatican official, Archbishop Elio Sgreccia, joined Fisichella in his criticism to Obama’s pro-abortion decision.

Although retired as former President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Sgreccia's is still one of the most sought after opinions on bioethical issues in the Roma Curia.

"This deals a harsh blow not only to us Catholics but to all the people across the world that fight against the slaughter of innocents that is carried out with abortion," Sgreccia told the Italian news agency ANSA .

Unfortunately, many Christains believe that the secular world should be held to the same moral standard as the Church, but we fail to realize that God has always judged His house first without political wrangling; he affords humans the ability to chose thier on fates. Furthermore, it would be ignorant to suggest that the government can signifacantly decrease the number of abortions by restricting aid. If the argument is that the government should not fund abortion, one can clearly argue that our tax dollars are spent on many evils, but becuase they are in our interest we refuse to consider. The abortion issue came to a head as a result of its clandestine nature and the procedure was legalized in the attempt to improve the womans health after many realized that the government was ineffective of legislating morality. Sounds like Prohibition. Listen folks, infanticide has always existed, even during the days of old. Such a horendous but yet pervasive act should be treated, unfortunately, as any other sin. Most people on this blog probably could care less about a remote individual drowning his problems away through alcholism. What makes abortion different? Most of us hold contempt for the poor and the widow, especially if they are of a different ethnicity. The real power of Christians is our connection with God through prayer not through superficial laws that mask the real problems of our world.

It is a tragedy.
The abortion was legalized in Hungary at the early sixties. Since that we have over 5 million children lost.
This is the begining of the collapse of the atheist human civilization.
The next step is the euthanasy.

I agree that any Catholic who voted for abortion should feel shame.

However what has Obama done for the economy? Left wing governments don't have a good track record with economies so I don't share your expectation. Even Obama seems to be talking up the negatives as if he lacks confidence in his own ability.

I have been a prolifer all my life. Not because of my Catholic faith, but because it's logical to support the unborn.

All of us were once in the womb. So if we decide to support policies against the child in the womb, it makes us ungrateful and inimical to life generally. President Obama should respect life by reversing his stance on abortion.

People living in developing countries looking for free monies can easily accept pro-abortion stands just for the monetary benefits and butcher their young from the womb. we do not want to end up messing the gift divinely given to us by God. We are here not by our own accord, so whay must we terminate others coming after us. Abortion is evil and must be prevented using every possibility available.

I love the stance of the Catholic Church since Humane Vitae was published in 1968. Life is sacred and only God has power over it not any president.

One of the countries that will now receive funds from us for family planning is China, which has a policy of forced abortion and sterilization. I am not disappointed in Obama because he stated publicly many times this was what he was going to dom I am more upset with the huge number of Americans including Catholics and others against abortion who couldn't or wouldn't have awareness as to what this man believes in. I expect to hear of more surprise when he overturns the ban on federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. And when we have Universal Health Care and rationing,

I agree with Heidi, where were the Catholic voices during the Campaign? I will say, though, that our Archbishop and many of our Priests in Kansas did speak out., after all.. we have the misfortune to have Dr. Tiller's Abortion Clinic in Wichita, Kansas that murders our babies daily. The fight continues daily with the Sidewalk counselors trying to save the children. It sorrows me to know that so many of my brothers and sisters in the Catholic church voted for Obama! If this principle can be invoked in defence of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay then it should be invoked even more strongly in defence of the unborn child. What future can any country have when the killing of its future children is sanctioned by Presidential decree?

According to a survey by the Washington Post: less than 1.5 percent of the estimated 60,000 or more men who have served in the Catholic clergy have been accused of child sexual abuse

The data on the Protestant clergy . In a 1984 survey, 38.6 percent of ministers reported sexual contact with a church member, and 76 percent knew of another minister who had had sexual intercourse with a parishioner. In the same year, a Fuller Seminary survey of 1,200 ministers found that 20 percent of theologically “conservative” pastors admitted to some sexual contact outside of marriage with a church member. The figure jumped to over 40 percent for “moderates”; 50 percent of “liberal” pastors confessed to similar behavior.

Finally, in the authoritative work by Penn State professor Philip Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests, it was determined that between .2 and 1.7 percent of priests are pedophiles. The figure among the Protestant clergy ranges between 2 and 3 percent.

CONCLUSION

The issue of child sexual molestation is deserving of serious scholarship. Too often, assumptions have been made that this problem is worse in the Catholic clergy than in other sectors of society. This report does not support this

conclusion. family members are the most likely to sexually molest a child. It shows that the incidence of sexual abuse of a minor is slightly higher among the Protestant clergy than among the Catholic clergy, and that it is significantly higher among public school teacher

It's easy for people who "are living" to be for abortion. The church needs to fight the policies of the Obama administration with all its strength.

In the US, we had 54 per cent of whom I call "Sometime Catholic" vote for Mr. Obama. So, the church has a high road to climb. We are thankful for such great men as Archbishop Chaput who is the most outspoken.

Obama is not the legitimate president of the USA. The USA constitution requires that president be a natural born citizen (two parents being US citizens). Obama Sr. was not a US citizen.
The Vatican should immediate call this action as illegal and void. Call for the arrest of Obama on international crimes against the church and the innocents.

Moral theology teaches if we aware of an evil committed, we can end up guilty of sinning as well if we participate either directly, or indirectly--sin of omission. There are several ways of becoming an accomplice to sin.“Silence”and
“Defense of the Evil Done” are two of the ways in which we cooperate.

We are called to defend God’s laws. Murder of the innocent is always and in every case wrong.

Whenever someone within the Church states a truth that bothers people, they bring up the abuse crisis rather than respond directly to the issue at hand. That is a separate issue that has been addressed extensively. Study all of the policies and responses of the Church and ask what else it should be doing to

To Kate & Rick, I need not to seek the wisdom from the Catholic law or the Cannon law that are made by men and men only. I had the previlege to see the real human fetus from Body Exhibit. A 9 week old baby is a life that fully form with fingers and eyes in details. Doctors perform abortion at 12 week old and i don't even want to tell you the glory details, but i can tell you this. It is a premeditated murder by the doctors, the parents, and the advocates of abortion. Who gave the pro-choice people the right to murder? By the way, not all the church officials are demons. I have been some humble priests such as the Boston Archbishop, His Eminence Sean Cardinal O'Malley and many other priests who lead the March for Life for years regardless their busy schedule. They are truly good men. Other church officials just do a little talk but never walk the walks.

Despite several uninformed comments here, the Vatican has every right to condemn President Obama's position. I find it ludicrous (and hypocritical) when we have a president who wants to worry about protecting the "rights" of known terrorists who have in many cases committed serious offenses against humanity, while at the same time he has so little regard for the lives and rights of innocent unborn children. I am not a crazy radical here, simply pointing out the hypocrisy. Why is it acceptable to punish innocents who have yet to be born, and to defend those guilty of heinous crimes who will in all likelihood return to those ways once released? It's funny how comments of religious leaders are treated with some degree of respect...unless they're Catholic. Then it's all right to make fun, bash, and otherwise disrespect these views. There are many American Catholics, I am sure, who don't truly understand what it means to be Catholic, because they voted for Obama in spite of his pro-abortion policies. And as to the pedophile priests, while these are indeed serious offenses, let's examine fact. The number of priests in that category is dismally small compared to the number of good, holy priests. Second, it was the American bishops, who have long thought themselves subject to their own whim, who dealt with this poorly, not the Vatican. And statistically instances of such abuse occur more often among Protestant youth ministers! Thank you liberal media for your keen reporting!

I am shocked at the ignorance of some of the comments here. Apparently, many Catholics do not have a clue as to authentic Catholic teaching on the dignity of human life. PLEASE read Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life) and then reconsider the idiocy of saying that the living have more rights than unborn babies. The right to be ALIVE is paramount to all others. Killing an innocent life can never be excused. The poor of third world countries need just governments who do not cause their own people to suffer in order to line their own pockets and stay in power. Most impoverished nations have corrupt governments who profit from the suffering of their people. They accept aid from us and spend it on civil wars to stay in power while their own people starve or die from a multitude of diseases, including aids. It is imperialism at its worst for us to tell people how many children to have. They need our support for democracy and true education, so that they have the right to decide for themselves what is good for them. By giving foreign aid to support abortion all we are doing is helping their governments and abortion promoters to exterminate these people. Shame on us for allowing this to happen. Please pray for the conversion of our president and other leaders, and the misinformed citizens who have voted for them in a pro-abortion culture of death.

Pope Benedict is providing us with the proper attitude and actions to deal effectively with this issue. (Notice how he and the Bishops send letters to President Obama?) I would like to encourage everyone to practice the Christian principles when dealing with this.

I would like to encourage everyone to write to your representatives and to President Obama. They need for us to share and teach Catholic values with them. There are many websites online which make it very easy to contact your representatives. Catholic Charities USA, and Congress.org are places where I recommend to write from. Being brief, and showing respect is important in making a positive impact.

Can anyone think of other positive suggestions on how to effectively deal with this? This is a good place to list them.

Please be truthful, is the title correct? Is it "The Vatican" making official negative comments, oris it two people affiliated in some way with the Vatican, who are expressing a personal idea?

I bring this up because I believe that many, either purposefully (to air a political bias) or naturally (because they really believe it) try to infer that Obama is somehow "for" abortion.

The opposite is true, in that Obama believes that far fewer abortions will happen using the approach of education, counseling, economic elevation, and re-socializing some segments, rather than the criminalization approach.

Since I cannot do the research required to fully understand the whole issue, I rely on two paths of information. One is the opinion of the Catholic law professor (a former republican in Reagan's cabinet support group)who wrote a book which defended Obama's thinking on abortion as the most likely to succeed. Secondly, Obama's decency and smarts lead me to trust his approach.

I have never seen an official message from The Vatican which in any way refutes the professor's book, or Obama's approach. Have you?

Those that voted for Obama here in America know exactly what he believes and this was actually brought up during the campaign. Dear Sir,
The catholic church certainly has a right to their opinion. However, in America, we have a democratic process set by our constitution. The people voted for President Obama in a majority that hasn't been seen in a long time. Mr. Obama's campain platform was publicized and Mr. Obama made his positions clear. All of us voted for him knowing that. It is an insult of our citizens to say that ethics wasn't a part of our consideration. Furthermore, it is an insult for the catholic church to call our newly elected President "arrogant" for performing his duty, promise, and citizenry. This is a democracy and not a theocracy. Our president serves our country and not the Vatican. I for one am very insulted by the Vatican that owes no allegience to noone but themselves and their agenda.
