Order of Canada to be awarded to abortionist

.- The Order of Canada Advisory Council has voted to award the Order of Canada to abortionist and militant atheist Dr. Henry Morgentaler. Some Members of Parliament and others are reportedly moving to attempt to stop the bestowal of the award, calling the decision inappropriate and unpopular.

The award is scheduled to be bestowed on Morgentaler on July 1, Canada Day. Morgentaler is sometimes referred to as “Canada's Father of Abortion” and “Canada’s Father of Secular Humanism,” according to LifeSiteNews.com. He is responsible for Canada’s elimination of laws restricting or regulating abortion.

In February LifeSiteNews.com reported that a group of abortion supporters were trying to force Dr. Morgentaler’s nomination for the award in a “last ditch effort.” A public furor resulted, ending quickly when a February 20 press release from the office of the Governor General, who is responsible for the award, showed Morgentaler was not on 2008’s nominee list.

A June 28 e-mail from the organization 4MYCANADA reports that the normal Order of Canada award advisory process may have been changed. According to 4MYCANADA, the approval committee normally awards the honor by unanimous consent.

“From what we understand at this point,” 4MYCANADA says, “this committee, headed by Chief
Justice Beverly McLachlin, PC, decided to over-ride that protocol and take this one to a democratic vote on the committee. The majority of the committee voted in favor of Morgentaler's nominee and so, for (what we understand) may be the first time in history, the committee appointed someone without their normal unanimous consent - someone who millions of Canadians would not consider a hero in our nation."

Many pro-lifers have critically responded to the selection of Morgentaler for the award, the announcement of which comes over Canada’s major annual holiday weekend.

"It is dreadful that this honor should even be considered for a man who's only claim to fame is that he is a professional killer of defenseless babies in their mothers' wombs," said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. "Those who have received this prestigious medal should return it because it will have been devalued and disgraced.”

"If Morgentaler had any integrity he would refuse the medal", said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of CLC. "This presentation should be given to people who have made Canada a better place to live and the elimination of thousands of human beings who would have contributed to the future of Canada is a disgrace not an honor."

Columnist Douglas Farrow, in an article in the National Post, reports "the decision, which is to be announced in time for Canada Day, is clearly not driven by popular demand. For example, an online poll by the Globe and Mail, with over 300,000 respondents, went 92% to 8% against giving the award to Morgentaler."

Mass murderers welcome in Canada.

This hypocrite who kills preborn women claims to be fighting for their rights.

What utter nonsense.

Our politicians are spineless. He was convicted of a felony, and according to the order of canada rules - is not even eligible.

Now we have abortions in BC taking place when they discover they are carrying female babies.

That REALLY helps women's rights doesn't it? It specifically targets women.

How sad that people would rather that women were forced to have children, rather than that every child was born into a loving family that wanted them. I am saddened for my nation, but not because Morgentaler is to receive the Order of Canada.

How sad that a senior citizen of this country would applaud a man who is responsible for over 100,000 abortions in this country...

Why must the article point out that Morgentaler is a "militant atheist"? What does that have to do with the issue of abortion? Since atheists are a minority in Canada, who do you think is having the most abortions anyway?

I'm an atheist. I also happen to be against abortion and disagree with Morgentaler being awarded the Order of Canada.

Canadian apathy prevails again! We cannot blame anyone but ourselves. As perverse and shameful as it is, it comes as no surprise."...in the last days, good will be considered evil and evil will be counted as good". Wake up 'moral MAJORITY' & cry out! It's OK to be passionate!

Even though I regard Dr. Morgentaler as an evil man and abortion as a crime against humanity, we Catholics in Canada are as responsible for there being a Dr. Morgentaler as anyone else. Many years ago, when abortion was restricted, the economic and social prospects of numerous young woman who got pregnant before wedlock were doomed. Catholics and other leaders of society would (i) treat her like a social leper and (ii) act like she got pregnant by herself (the guy rarely had to share the responsibility). These things produced the desperation that led to amateur abortions and other horrible consequences.

This huge historical injustice produced the pressures and the sheer rage among many women that led to the social acceptance of abortion. Two huge wrongs do not make a right, but we Catholics should hang our heads in shame before anyone else we point our fingers at.

Well...i guess insults can be almost anything, so let me try to bite my tongue...i believe as a good catholic, that the authors of this site have no right to make other catholic people, especially women, feel that they are somehow "bad" if they have to have an abortion. You can have an opinion on dr. morgentaler, but even some of your own converts disagree with your opinions on him, and a whole lot of other doctrines you preach. leave a dying man alone, or should we all start to criticize all the outdated, dying catholic doctrines, too ??:)

I am baffled! Morgentaler broke the law in his campaign to change it. He was never made accountable for his lawless approach to change and now he is actually being honored for it.
O Canada!!
In my profession as a psychologist I have seen in theory, research, and in my private practice how detrimental permissive parenting and mixed messages are to the development of a healthy identity--what does this award do to our country's identity?

How can the State honour Dr. Morgentaler, a man, who is responsible, through abortions for the elimination of many thousands of its future citizens? At a time, when Canadian deaths are outnumbering Canadian births by a large margin? Shame on the members of the Order of Canada selection committee. I am happy that I will never be on their list and would refuse this distinction should it be offered to me.

As a senior and a lifelong Roman Catholic I believe that Dr. Morgentaler is very deserving of this award. My church, mired as it is in the 12th century, will not agree, but it is slowly disappearing under the dead weight of its own stupidity.

To think that an actual murderer is to be awarded the Order of Canada. This will now mean the redefining of what type of person is considered for this award, as Morgentaler is the antithesis of 'enriching the lives of others'. This will be a most shameful day for the majority of Canadians. That's right! Majority!
