.- Johnson & Johnson’s funding of Planned Parenthood is “antithetical” to its “best corporate interests” and should be stopped, said Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, president of Human Life International yesterday.

The Catholic priest addressed the corporation’s board of directors, executive management and shareholders at their meeting April 27 in New Brunswick, N.J. Human Life International is a stockholder in Johnson & Johnson.

“Human Life International is particularly distressed that any amount of funding should be given to a so-called ‘charitable’ organization that undermines the very consumer base of Johnson & Johnson,” Fr. Euteneuer told them.

“It is antithetical to your best corporate interests to be donating 'charitable funding' to an organization that eliminates babies and hurts mothers,” he said at the meeting.

He noted that Planned Parenthood Federation of America performed 255,000 surgical abortions last year, and 3.8 million abortions since 1970.

“To avoid further boycotts by other conscientious organizations and individuals, Johnson and Johnson should completely disavow any association with Planned Parenthood and any other group that profits from such drastic human rights violations,” he concluded.

HLI's ownership is not hypocrisy. You and I should disinvest, but HLI shoud own at least one share so it can attend the Board meetings and complain. We are not meant to wash our hands of the imperfect world, but to be the leavening mthat transforms it.

HLI is to be commended and encouraged to invest in other publicly owned companies so it may be the voice of conscience and the Gospel light in the business world.

Christ's Church is always a sign of contradiction in the world.

HLI was given a gift of stock in J&J, so this cannot be considered a traditonal form of investment, and they are using it in a most creative way. Raising this issue in resolutions informs stockholders that their money is being used for evil. Good show, HLI!

I believe the reason HLI invests in a company like J&J is to afford them the right to speak at the company's AGM as a shareholder. It might only be one share, but they are entitled to attend the AGM and speak to the captive audience.

I applaud the courage of Fr. Euteneur to directly confront the corporation, heighten the awareness of the fact that Johnson & Johnson is promoting the killing of human beings. I for one will do everything I can to support the example of our brother Fr. Euteneur. If more of us follow his example and speak up, we will be active in helping bring an end to this charade that is killing us. Also, it isn't that hard to find the the same products made by different companies.

If Johnson & Johnson enjoys being a corporate outlaw it should ignore the pleas of HLI. This sounds like an excellent boycott issue. How can they hold themselves up as responsible corporate citizens?

Why does HLI invest in an organization that supports abortion in the first place? If HLI thinks it can effect a change, then fine. If not, disinvest.
