Article statement: “A few ardently pro-life Catholics, meanwhile, actually believe that what they call ‘silence and treachery’ from the bishops on abortion helped pave the way for Obama’s success.”” Even in this article from a Catholic News website, we who are faithful and crying out to our Bishops to be true shepherds for Christ are trivialized. Look how this article was written. “We are just a few who actually believe”---actually believe--what do you mean indeed, as if that is a foolish thing to do! It may be true that we are only a few, but, nothing escapes the light of Christ. NO, the silent Bishops and the Bishops complicit with the mortal sin of promoting Barack Obama will have on their conscience the blood of at least 4 million innocent children over the next four years. Woe unto all of us! Thank you Archbishop Chaput and Bishops in solidarity with your Rock Solid defense of life, thank you! Please remain on the Rock and fight the dead weight in the USCCB.

Some bishops spoke out very clearly about the moral issues involved in the presidential election. Others did not.
My concern is not that the bishops were "telling people how to vote." Rather, my concern is that their leadership had zero effect on how people voted, since Catholics were at least as supportive of the abortionists, if not more so, than non-Catholics. If the bishops teach and it doesn't change anyone's mind, do we have effective leaders? Does it make any difference if you are "Catholic?" Does that mean something about what you believe?

With a few notable and heroic exceptions, the Bishops have destroyed their own reason for existence by yielding their teaching authority to modernist staff members of the USCCB. Such malfeasance in the real world would mean removal from office. The lip service to Christ will continue but the love of His Word seems highly selective and decades of flawed teaching likely to continue. Mea maxima culpa.

We need everyone not just bishops and priests nor religious to be bold and to be zealous in our stand as Catholics especially on life issues. Families need to be reminded and re-educated. Educators need to be well-informed. Religious leaders need to be bolder in defining the issues. I commend bishops and priests who dared make a stand on the abortion issue.

Message to Bishops:
Clean out your chancery offices and religious education departments of the Marxists who are undermining the education of our children and adults! Get rid of "Generations of Faith" and put in "Faith and Life" as your religious education series. The four marks of the one true Church are sadly missing. Until you get unity back by putting everyone on the same page regarding Catholic teachings you are absolutely impotent in cleaning up this Church! And your meetings are a joke! Get some courage and clean house!

Fr. Reese is an intellectual who parses morality and life and death issues like Bishop Cauchon and the intellectual from University of Paris who burned Joan of Arc for what amounted to doing what God told her to do and telling the truth about it. Too bad many of the bishops and Catholic intellectuals fall into the executioners of truth, of saints, and of unborn innocents. Reese would essentially require the bishops to remain silent about the evil of abortion and concentrate on practical political engagement for “reducing abortions,” as promised by Barack Obama. What pharasitical lukewarm spew out of the mouth version of Christ's teachings. If bishops do not speak out about this evil for that is what it is, history may accuse THEM of what actions and inactions took place around the murder of Joan, as well as the murder of innocents in the millions, not by Hitler or Stalin or Mao but by men in robes, clerical and political, who stood by while it happened and paid lip service to the horror and evil of it.

If you educate yourself and your family in the teachings of our faith there would be no need to " look to the Bishop" No Catholic can vote for a pro abortion candidate. It's that simple. Obama didn't hide his record he was quite open about it.If you voted for Obama you voted for a man who was very much proabortion. Some day you may have to answer for what you did. But you can't say you didn't know.

This is interesting! Catholic bishops lose because they stand for life? A poll on how Catholics vote will determine the Catholic Pro Life position? If enough Catholics vote for Pro Choice (Abortion) then we should restrict comment and criticism! If we have 50% of the America Catholic population supporting and promoting abortion (The vote does this!) we better review the teaching efforts of the Church. Now is not the time to retreat! Now is the time to stand up and defend a tenant of the Catholic faith; protection of the most vulnerable and helpless in our society.
Hope the bishops continue to support life. They must emphasize that a candidate or an individual who professes to be Catholic and promotes voting for Abortion should not participate in the sacraments; it is their choice. They cannot be seen as Catholics who set their own doctrine. There are many churches around where these “Nominal Catholics” can find a home. If only one person on earth supported Pro Life that would be the only correct person. The "nominal" or boomer Catholic does not trump the tradition, doctrine, teachings, scripture and magisterium of the True Roman Catholic Church! Peter Steinfels and Fr. Reese, the bishops didn’t loose in this election millions of unborn innocent babies did! Aren’t you proud!

We need our Bishops to be leaders, to regain authority and not be afraid of offending those who choose not to follow the bishops suggestions. We need to return to a culture of life. We have had good catholics out in the public for over 30 years who have fought for the rights of the unborn and have had little support from their church and their clergy. This is an important subject and if some parents are not teaching the evils of abortion at home, then the youth needs to hear it from the altar. Please continue to teach and lead God's people without fear.

Catholic bishops are successors of St Peter who was given by Christ, keys of the kingdom of God, and they must stand up and fight for what Christ instructed to proclaim to all nations about the kingdom of God on earth.
American voters and Obama may have won a war on abortion, but Christ already won victorious an everlasting battle where those who are against His teachings through his Church will be judged accordingly. Remember we are not of this world, but we must continue to fight for as many souls we can save (born and unborn)for the kingdom of God. I will continue praying for this long battle to save God-imaged spiritual beings kill by the pro-abortionist before they have a chance to live their human life fully as God intended. How many presidents, vice presidents, doctors, lawyers, clergies, catechists, scientists, etc. who were killed in the 50 millions destroyed in the last 35 years? This is also a constitutional issue and hope the Catholic lawyers will do their research and stand for the rights of the unborn human beings. You know, they can kill the unborn body, but they cannot kill the God-imaged spiritual beings who returns to God and wait for their killers in the end of time.

Note to Fr. Thomas Reese: The issue isn't between partisan and non-partisan bishops. It is between those bishops who are willing to stand up for the faith and those who are not. The election results clearly show that the failure of bishops to defend the faith clearly, consistently, and continually, results in Catholics who don't apply the teaching of the faith to their lives. I have nothing but praise for those 50 bishops who defended the faith; other than to say it was too late to make an impact.
What they need to do now is come forth with a united front against those "catholics" who deny articles of the faith and follow the teaching of Rome that, due to their public and obstinate refusal to accept a non-negotiable teaching of the faith, pro-abortion "catholic" politicians will be formally excommunicated on top of their automatic excommunication that already exists. Praise be to God and God help America in the times that are to come!

this article was much needed. so many people I spoke to felt that the Catholic Church fell on it's face prior to this election by not speaking out about the Freedom of Choice Act and the amendments Obama plans to enact, which are tax payers paying for abortion, allowing partial birth abortion up to 9 months of pregnancy for any reason, no parental notification of minors having abortion, and forcing the 38 stated who banned partial birth abortion to have to do it. as well as forcing nurses and doctors who refuse to do it on matter of their own conscience and the Hippocratic oath to be penalized.
Some Catholic Churches in my archdiocese were very brave and bold (Bishop Serratelli) in discussing this at homilies while some remained strangely silent. Many of my friends and family find it very disturbing, especially when certain pastors will publicly endorse Obama from the pulpit now that he is elected. where are our Catholic Leaders>??

Voting on abortions issue or politicians who support abortion is NEVER problematic. What is now evident is that the Catholic faithful is poorly catecized. And further confused because of the wishy washy response of most of the bishops to these politicians.
This election is a wake-up call to begin TODAY with a cohesive plan to combat radical abortion. Take a had look at the Gay activist attacking church that upheld legitimate marriage in California. We can no longer look to our bishops for instruction in the faith. What a waste of travel expenses, time and breath. There are too few with courage, and they are not encouraged by their fellow bishops. Sometimes its hard to tell the R.C. Church from the Episcopal church. Looks and sounds the same to me.

It looks like the bishops have for far too long focused way too much on "social" issues and not enough on FAITH and WORSHIP. The secular media has been controlling peoples thinking on social issues while faith and worship has been so liberalized it blends together to form Catholics into a false faith. We need a return to penance, piety, sacredness, etc. and the social will then fix itself. People of REAL FAITH can't help but act properly in society.

It is time for the Bishops to focus more on educating the people, specially those who are thinking of aborting their babies, the the consequences of their action, that they are truly the ones who will answer to God for their action. I liken this to the Gun Law. It does not mean that because you are licensed to carry a gun, then you can just start killing people. We all know that you will surely get a jail term for your action. Same with abortion, only those who abort their babies will answer to God for their action. This is a clear disobedience of one of the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not kill.
If people are made aware of the consequences, I believe that we can stop abortion but we need to pray harder for the enlightenment of all, both the people and the political leaders. C. Robinson

That the bishops are divided is not surprising. It will continue unless more of them develop a backbone. A good start would be for Cardinal George to become more vocal in his role as leader of the USCCB and in his own backyard on what the Church expects of Catholic politicians. Chicago and Illinois are at the top of dissidence, tolerated for years, in the guise of the 'seamless garment' hog wash. The fruits are powerful locally groomed politicians like Durbin, Daley, Blagojevitch, Madigan and a host of others that go widely unchallenged on the national stage, like Plegosi, Kennedy, Biden, et all. Meanwhile poorly catechized pewsitters vote for these bozos because they claim to be 'catholic!'

The bishops have fumbled the ball for more than forty years and can't seem to recover it. It will take more than ONE sudden push to get Catholics to think and act like Catholics again. It will also take following the Vatican (which they have not done much of)especially concerning the Sacred Liturgy. If the Liturgy is the "summit", as pope John Paul II said then this past election shows that we have been climbing the wrong mountain, because of poor liturgy, music, catechetics, etc. (most)Catholics have lost the TRUE faith. It's time to listen pope Benedict and follow his lead. It's time to get back on our knees, and learn how to restore our old practices of penence.

That those Bishops who clarified the USCCB document on voting before the election have lost one iota of authority is ludicrous. I have MUCH more respect for these men than I had before they confirmed the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. I for one, am hoping they speak out many more times, loudly and clearly, emphasizing that to be Catholic does not mean one can pick and choose what one believes and supports and still be a Catholic in full communion with the Church. The Church teaches ABSOLUTES and in this society of Relativism and Materialism some cannot stomach them. Objective Truth EXISTS and those Bishops who spoke out against INTRINSIC EVIL are very intelligible for those who want to hear those truths.
