Saraiva Martins, José C.F.M.

Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, C.M.F. was born on January 6, 1932 in Gagos de Jarmelo, Portugal.

He was ordained a Priest with the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on March 16, 1957, and on May 26, 1988 was appointed Titular Archbishop of Thuburnica and Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education (for Seminaries and Institutes of Study). His ordination as Bishop took place on July 2, 1988.

On May 30, 1998 he was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and just three years later, on February 21 2001, he was appointed Cardinal-Deacon of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore and elevated to Cardinal.

On April 2, 2005 he ceased to be Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and on the 21 of that same month he was confirmed as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

He retired as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on July 9, 2008, and on February 24, 2009 he was appointed Cardinal-Bishop of Palestrina. His installation took place on April 19, 2009.
