Cardinal George Alencherry was born April 19, 1945 in Thuruthy.
He was ordained Priest of Changanacherry (Syro-Malabarese), India on November 19, 1972. He was appointed as Bishop of Thuckalay (Syro-Malabarese), India on November 11, 1996, and was ordained Bishop on February 2, 1997.
On May 24, 2011 he was selected as Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly (Syro-Malabarese), India, and confirmed in that role the next day, May 25, 2011.
He was elevated to Cardinal on February 18, 2012 and appointed Cardinal-Priest of San Bernardo alle Terme. He was installed on October 14, 2012.
