Margeot, Jean

Cardinal Jean Margéot, Bishop emeritus of Port-Louis, was born on 3 February 1916 in Quatre-Bornes (Mauritius Island).

After having studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he was ordained priest on 17 December 1938. Immediately thereafter he returned to his native country and was very involved in the pastoral activities of his diocese.

In 1956 he was nominated vicar general and in June 1968 he was elected vicar capitular. On 6 February 1969 he was nominated bishop of Port-Louis. He was extremely active in the formation of the clergy and founded the Foyer Monsignor Murphy. Along with his involvement in the formation of the young and catechists, he provided spiritual guidance for the Chinese and Indian communities within the diocesan territory. He was also very active in the fight against drugs.

He served as president of the Episcopal Conference of Indian Ocean 1986 - 1989.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by John Paul II in the consistory of 28 June 1988. Titular church, St. Gabriel Archangel all’Acque Traversa.

Attended VIII Ordinary Assembly of World Synod of Bishops, 30 September - 28 October 1990.

Bishop emeritus of Port Louis, 15 February 1993.
