When Jenna and Dan Hadley learned their son would not live long after birth, they decided to start making memories with him right away.

The couple created a “bucket list” of things they wanted their child to experience in his short life, even if it meant experiencing them womb-side.

“We understood…that our time with our son could be very limited, so we wanted to make the most of the time that we had with him,” Dan told a local news station in Pennsylvania.

Shane was diagnosed with anencephaly, a neural defect which causes babies to be born without parts of the brain and skull. As a result, many newborns with the condition die soon after birth.

His parents created a facebook page, Prayers for Shane, where over 100,000 people followed along as they checked off places to visit and activities to do during Jenna’s pregnancy, including baseball games, a trip to the¬†Shrine of St. John Neumann, and multiple sights in New York City¬†. The couple completed the last item on their list Sept. 6, a little over a month before Shane’s Oct. 12 due date, but the couple is continuing to treasure the time they have with their son.

“We truly value every minute that we have with our son,” Dan said, “and we thank God every night for blessing us with such a special little boy.”

And while Shane might not have been able to visually experience his bucket list, according to WebMD, babies in the womb experience the smells and taste of food, the conversations around them, and changes in light and temperature.
