It started on Sunday with over 350,000 people attending Mass in Cebu.

Pilgrims have traveled from across the globe to participate in the 51st International Eucharistic Congress, Jan. 24-30, 2016, in the Philippines.

More than 15,000 participants from over 90 countries around the world are expected to attend sessions this week and more than 1,000 local families have agreed to open their homes to delegates.

Missing from that number is Pope Francis, who was not able to attend, although he did visit the Philippines during a special trip in January 2015.

In his place, the Holy Father sent Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, S.D.B., archbishop of Yangon, Myanmar, as a papal legate (from the Ancient Roman title legatus), or personal representative of the Pope.
