Bl. Fr. Jerzy

This week, on June 1-2, ┬álocal PBS stations in many U.S. cities will be airing the documentary of Blessed Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko, the chaplain of the Solidarity movement in Poland who strove for freedom from the Communist regime through non-violence in the early 1980’s.

The trailer for “Messenger of the Truth” shows Bl. Fr. Jerzy telling someone off screen, “The role of the priest is to proclaim the truth and suffer for the truth, and if necessary, even die for the truth.”

In 1984, he gave his life for the truth when he was murdered by the Communists after years of harassment, threats and imprisonment. An estimated one million people came to Warsaw for his funeral.
