Reuters has reported that Pope Francis is one of the nominees this year, along with Edward Snowden, a Russian newspaper critical of President Vladimir Putin, and a Catholic priest helping African migrants.

The final nominees for the prize will be announced in early October.

If Pope Francis were to win, he’d join the ranks of some other interesting Catholic figures who have won in the past:

Fr. Georges Pire (1958)

Bl. Mother Theresa (1979)

Lech Walesa (1983)

Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo (1996)
