Amato, Angelo

Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect Emeritus for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, was born on June 8, 1938 in Molfetta, Italy.

He was ordained a Priest of Salesians of Saint John Bosco on December 22, 1967. On December 19, 2002 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Sila and Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. His ordination as Bishop took place on January 6, 2003.

On July 9, 2008 he was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

On November 20, 2010 he was appointed Cardinal-Deacon of Santa Maria in Aquiro and elevated to Cardinal. He was installed on February 11, 2011.

On February 28,  2013 he ceased his role as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints upon the retierment of Pope Benedict XVI.
