  • December 13, 1969: Ordained as a Jesuit priest
  • May 20,1992: Appointed titular Bishop of Auca 
  • February 28, 1998-2013: Became Archbishop of Buenos Aires
  • February 21, 2001: Appointed Cardinal of San Roberto Ballarmino
  • March 13, 2013: Elected Pope when he was named the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church
  • March 19, 2013: Installed as Pope Francis
  • June 29, 2013: Released first encyclical “Lumen Fidei” 
  • July 22, 2013: First international visit to Brazil for World Youth Day
  • December 2013: Named "Person of the Year" by Time magazine
  • May 24, 2015: Released second encyclical “Laudato Si'”
