Diabolical possession should be handled by exorcists, Vatican official says

Bishop Gianfranco Girotti

.- The regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, said this week that when a person believes he is dealing with a case of diabolical possession, it should be handled by an exorcist instead of a confessor.

During a seminar the bishop said that in cases of visions, “diabolical, mystic and supposedly supernatural phenomenon,” the “confessor should be particularly prudent and experienced.” However, he recommended “the intervention of an exorcist” as these are “complex and delicate cases.”

Demonic phenomena include “possession, obsession and vexation,” and he said in cases of “mysticism, hysteria and other syndromes,” experts should be consulted.

Likewise, Bishop Girotti spoke of the crisis of the sacrament of reconciliation and noted that according to recent statistics, 30% of the faithful in Italy do not see the need for confession and 20% find talking about their sins with others difficult.

PART 2:
When a young child writes or draws horrific illustrations, with captions "there's a monster on my head," and complains in terror of "hearing voices," and this is a bright, well-functioning child, raised Catholic ... is this a likely indication of potential demonic or satanic activity ... or of telepathic or clairvoyant activity? When such occurances happen more than once, and strange comments or remarks are made by more than one child, and one is in the US, where exorcism and belief in the traditional rituals and values of the Catholic Church are not as firm as were one in Europe, or the MidEast, how does one obtain help, for these situations? How does one obtain help for a child terrified of "voices," who has no indications of mental illness, in a nation where the US Dept of State, and NASA, and other intelligence entities fund psychic research, and maintain databases of psychic abilities; and psi research, such as telepathy is well-accepted in some entities, and speculated as being used as a "tactic of torture and abuse," in some interrogations, and aboard some flights ... and innocent children are displaying the symptoms, of such abuse, such "communications," or such potential possessions. (Possession of person, place, or object). When taken in combination with repeated unexplained phenomena experienced by more than one person, some Catholic, some openly hostile to the Church, with several incidents occurring inside churches, how is demonic distng. from psychic?

Is there a difference in the universal Catholic mandate favouring exorcism, US Catholic constituency, to European constituency? Or is this merely a cultural difference? Is it common for children to speak of "hearing voices," or be caught on tape making statements such as "don't get out," to allegedly invisible entities, (in response to a suggestion to "get out," to the alleged entity); for phenomena, sometimes captured, again, on tape or camera, such as water appearing, inexplicably, around crucifixes; objects moving about (on camera); alleged voices out of a tabernacle, heard by more than one individual; open and routinely practiced satanic rituals, held in areas where children live; professionals, incl. doctors, openly supporting satanism, or openly condemning Catholicism; landlords ordering a Catholic window decal to be removed, lest it offend "the satanists" living there? Would open satanism be tolerated, in Europe, by the Church? Would alleged "psychic" abilities, or occult practices, be openly tolerated? When is a child on tape, responding to an unseen entity, or terrified, or banging their head, and speaking of "voices," liable to be viewed more as injured by satanic or demonic activity, under Church teachings; and when by alleged "telepathic" or "clairvoyant" activity or research, taking place in their same geographical area (SF Bay / Oakland / NASA / Sunnyvale, CA / Livermore). Where priests vanish 2 days before Xmas mass, other priests die, other priests Xfer?

I've always read that possession is extremely rare. I'm not referring to the evangelical stuff but the hardcore R.C. phenomenon. I'm not convinced that it's purely diabolical in nature. Could there be other (paranormal) reasons? Or a natural cause? If one does not believe in the devil, then what is it?

It's good that the church is again realizing that there is a need for exorsists. It seemed just a bit ago we were hearing that possession didn't happen any more and finding one would have been tough .Wouldn't it be neat if the small simple exorcisms like St Michaels prayer said at the end of Mass was brought back and having holy water in your home.

Dear Fr Girotti, you are right in saying that possession should be handled by an exorcist and it is good to know that Fr Amorth is recommending that all parishes around the world have one as well. We will need them more and more as more people blindly follow satan's evil plans of destruction rather than following God's plan for the world.

I agree with Bishop Girotti. True diabolical possession is a serious problem. Going only to a confessor for it is like going to a regular M.D. for an operation rather than a surgeon.

I have to admit confession has always been difficult for me. It seems priests are not so confident in their own approach to confession. We need to hear of the benefits and the good confession does from enthusiastic priests. Not to mention availability of priests.

Dear Bishop Girotti,

Somethimes the healing is as simple as confessing ones sins, other times it is much more, as our Lord did with some exorcisms, one needs to fast and pray intensely. Is this not so? Our society has become so sophiticated and so intellectual that we have forgotten the simple things Christ taught and the very need to look inward and find the demons within. This takes courage! Pray that this world will realize this, before it is like leaven overflowing the whole lump. The leaders especially the Bishops need to realize this in this country. GOD BLESS your work!
Bernadette
