Rep. Maloney: Obama to resume funding of U.N. program implicated in forced abortions

.- Supporters of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are confident that President-elect Barack Obama will reverse the Bush administration’s 2002 decision to stop the $40 million it received in U.S. funding. The policy was instated because of UNFPA’s support for China’s one-child policy, which includes coercive abortion practices. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D – N.Y.) said the funding will be approved by the Democratic majority Congress. Her comments came while speaking Wednesday at a press conference at the National Press Club where the 2008 U.N. report on world population was released. “You know the president will have to do nothing,” said Maloney. “He will just have to let the will of Congress go through. One of the changes is that UNFPA will be funded,” CNSNews.com reports. The Bush administration in 2002 had stopped funding the organization, citing the Kemp-Kasten Amendment which prohibits funds from being available to organizations or programs determined to be supporting or participating in coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization programs. In July of 2008, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte announced that for the sixth year in a row, the government had determined that “UNFPA provides support for and participates in the management of the Chinese government’s program of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization.” Rep. Maloney reported that she discusses UNFPA funding controversies in her book “Rumors of Our Progress are Greatly Exaggerated.” She said the UNFPA was founded “with American leadership” and “was supported strongly by George Bush’s father.” The new UN report, “Reaching Common Ground: Culture, Gender and Human Rights,” calls for “cultural sensitivity” to “mitigate and overcome cultural resistance to couples and individuals using modern contraception.” It claims to prepare for the empowerment of women with control over their fertility. Nevertheless, Rep. Maloney claimed the U.S. will no longer “impose our own ideology” under the UNFPA funding changes. She said Obama “has already said his administration will change the way we do business in Washington and that improving the role of women around the world is going to be one of his prominent priorities. “I am thrilled with this report, and I am really thrilled at the new direction of our government,” Maloney said, according to CNSNews.com. I find it hypocritical that a man that was abandoned by his father and partialy raised by his single mom (and i'm sure he was a burden at times but she still gave him life) and went to the finest colleges and later became the first partialy black president is for abortion. Imagine if his mother did. 52% of Americans wouldn't have a super star idle of a president!

It was/is never overpopulation. It's greed, selfishness, control, and the list goes on.

Back in the mid '80s, Mother Theresa said of the USA, "You prolong the life of the elderly and kill the unborn." Amen

I know that Jesus would not advocate the killing of an unborn child, even if it dose add a burden to the world. He makes it clear that every life is precious and worthy of love, no matter what! The people he ministered to the most were the unwanted- the burdens on society. He didn't kill them to try to make life easier for everyone else, He loved them. Furthermore, when I look to see who is helping the unloved, and unwanted in the world, most often times it is the Christian Church. And Mother Teresa is a wonderful example of the way Christ is using the church throughout the world. Therefore, Fransisco's argument is deeply flawed, and if he wants to use the term "WWJD" then he should think through its implications to their full extent.

Sadly, in an era of enlightment there is more confusion than ever. Roe vs Wade was intended to end back alley abortions, not to enable abortion on demand for those who chose to live dangerously. It has gone too far already and we will all have to answer for it in the end. Live birth abortions are truly horrific and we shouldn't have to pay for it. Why aren't we all marching to Washing ton.

Please define murder. Travel to Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Phillipines etc etc most countries in Africa and SEE -poverty, prostitution, high crime rates, lack of good education, infrastructure, parental despair, desease, etc etc. All these could be attributed to OVERPOPULATION.

Coercive or not, abortions are not the answer to overpopulation. Not only that, the reversal of the decision no imposes a moral issue for Catholics; since now taxpayers money will go towards countries that force abortions.

If the dems are going to use tax money of our pro-life citizens to include payment for coercive abortions, then we have surely fallen to the lowest level of disenfranchisement.

Francisco - Jesus would NOT murder unborn children. The world's population is not excessive, only the greed of some people.

I would like to ask the direct person involve in this evil proposal,if he still have conscience left, not to fear such kind of proposition."The means can never justify the means." Please think SO HARD if such an action will ever be justified before GOD. I'll continue to pray for your service to your country by not be an instrument to an unforgivable action. May God bless you, Mr. Obama and your family.

If a government allows the deliberately killing of one innocent human being, what will stop it from allowing the deliberate killing of them all? Barack Obama says repeatedly that women should not be burdened, not just by unborn children but also even by newborn children. Who else might come to be considered "burdens" - prisoners, the elderly, bad students, bad workers, the sick?

We must not despair,Our GOD is waiting for us to stand up for our BELIEFS,and not stand by wringing our hands in
"what can I do" attitude. We must pray daily and often, work for "life" in all it's stages. We must pray for our goverment and Leaders.

Reversing another of
Bush Jnr's decisions is generally welcome and this particularly so. The greatest evil in the world today is OVERPOPULATION - the catholic church should wake up and do it's share in solving this problem. Popes and priests lack for nothing and so do not seem to care that others are suffering and in pain. What would Jesus do?

If you want peace and no more disasters, then stop abortions. Offer the girls an opportunity to provide a home for their baby if they do not want it.There should be a recipient list for them to choose from.
