Obama's candidates for Vatican ambassador failing 'simple standard'
Doug Kmiec not in the running
![]() President Barack Obama
Related articles:
.- The Obama administration has seen three possible candidates it floated for the position of U.S. ambassador to the Holy See sunk due to their views on abortion. Additionally, a source at the Vatican confirmed to CNA that Professor Douglas Kmiec will not become the ambassador due to his stance on life issues. With the President traveling to Rome in July, when he hopes to meet Pope Benedict XVI, not filling the position would be a major gaffe. The news that the Vatican has balked at Obama's first three nominees was first reported by the Italian journalist Massimo Franco. According to Franco, a columnist for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, papal advisers told Mr. Obama's aides privately that all three nominees failed to meet the Vatican's most basic qualification on the abortion issue. "The informal dismissal of the first names whispered in the Obama inner circle is a signal," Mr. Franco told the Washington Times' Embassy Row in email. The well-connected Mr. Franco also explained that the rejection of the Obama candidates "would suggest that, at least so far, none of the potential Democratic diplomats were considered fit to 'improve relations' with the Holy See." Neither the Vatican Embassy in Washington nor the White House would comment Monday on the appointment of a new U.S. ambassador, according to the Washington Times. Mr. Franco, whose new book, "Parallel Empires: The Vatican and the U.S.," explores U.S.-Vatican relations over the past 200 years, said Mr. Obama's predicament underscores a deeper problem the Vatican has with the Democratic Party and its anti-life positions on abortion. He also noted that the lack of a U.S. ambassador "could become embarrassing" for the White House, if the position remains vacant when Obama goes to Italy for the G8 meeting this July. The White House is trying to arrange a time before or after the summit for Mr. Obama to meet the Pope. CNA contacted a Vatican official from the Office of the Secretary of State who said that he could not elaborate on the names that have been proposed so far by the Obama administration, but confirmed that the name of Professor Douglas Kmiec “never showed up.” The official told CNA that “there have only been informal exchanges of opinions, not direct, official proposals,” from the Obama administration. “Obviously, the exchange has not been fruitful in finding a mutually satisfying candidate, otherwise, at this point, there would have been an announcement, and there isn’t one.” Asked if pro-abortion Catholic Caroline Kennedy was on the short-list proposed by the administration, the official said he had “no comment.” An April 2 article in Panorama, an Italian news magazine, journalist Carlo Rossella predicted that Kennedy would be considered for the Vatican position. Rosella explained that after Sen. John Kerry was passed over in favor of Sen. Hillary Clinton for the position of Secretary of State, he asked two favors of President Obama, one of which was to name his former brother-in-law David Thorne as the ambassador to Italy. Kerry's second request was that Kennedy, herself aspiring to Clinton’s vacated Senate seat in New York, be appointed the administration’s Vatican ambassador. While some observers of the Vatican-Obama diplomatic debate have said that the Holy See is being too demanding, the Secretary of State official contacted by CNA dismissed the notion. “The Holy See has always set a very simple standard: the person should not be in opposition to fundamental teachings of the Church that belong to our common shared humanity. He or she may not believe in Catholic dogma if he or she is not a Catholic, but we could not accept someone who is in favor of abortion, or (human) cloning or same-sex unions equated to marriage,” the official said. “That is a fairly simple principle that governments like, say, Spain and Cuba, or Mr. Clinton’s administration, have been able to understand without a problem.” The official said that the debate around the chances of Prof. Kmiec to become Vatican Ambassador “is closed.” “He nailed the last nail in the coffin with his latest “disappointing position on embryonic stem cell research." It's the former. This president is an avowed Marxist who kept it well hidden while he was campaigning. He is a pathological narcissist.

Kmiec is pro-life. as far as I know, his views on life do not differ from that of the Church. Some conservative catholics are angry with him because he supported Obama despite their differences.

A pattern seems to be developing with the Obama administration. Their refusal to accept or inability to recognize traditional protocol continues to be exploited by those with whom they deal. In this case, I take great heart in the fact that the Vatican is being given the opportunity to publicly characterize as unacceptable, the celebrity, pseudo-Catholics being proposed for this position. To Free Thought: The decision to accept the credentials of an ambassador is up to the receiving head of state; meaning it is up to the Vatican to decide whether to accept a proffered ambassador. The Church has minimal requirements; if you are Catholic you are obliged to accept Catholic teachings, if you are not Catholic you are are least obligated to accept the Church's positions on abortion, euthenasia, marriage and embryonic stem-cell research. Frankly, if one is asked to do this job and doesn't at least accept these positions I'm at a loss as to how that ambassadorial candidate would think that he/she could even begin to be an effective amabassador to the Vatican. Your position represents frankly what has come to be known around the world as american arrogance; that becasue it's what we believe everyone else must accept it as true. Only one institution can lay claim to possessing the fullness of truth on issues of faith and morality; that is the Catholic Church.

Thank God some of our Catholic brethren were not duped by the likes of Doug Kmeic and other liberal progressive elitist and used a little common sense and research of the facts before casting our ballots in November. Campaign rhetoric delivered with pomp and style by media selected celebrities was not the template we used to measure our choices.
We pray those who were swayed to select Obama are by now ware of what a mistake it was to set in place such an anti-Catholic agenda in Washington. It’s been nothing short of a blitzkrieg of social progressive attacks on every prominent element of our most closely held values related to the culture of Life. Moreover Obama has broken promise after promise he had made during the campaign. No earmarks, no new taxes on the middle class, transparency in government, bipartisanship, and an end to deficit spending have all been cast aside in an unprecedented spending spree by over zealous victorious democrats who were able to “stimulate” and pork themselves to the limit without any resistance. Now we are coming to Easter Sunday with the Obama’s not sure where to go to worship? One could wonder if the hesitation and indecision on where to go to worship on Easter Sunday by THE ONE is somehow related to a notion homage in his mind should be an inbound flight.

Obama, with the help of American Catholics who voted him wrongly into power, can indeed foist his egotistic vision of a culture of death on this country, but he is insane if he thinks he can export this to the Vatican.
Great judgments await America, and this is because Obama and his pro-abortion administration are leading us to a doom that lurks to devour us. No country that kills its own children has any future, and this tragedy hasn't even begun to unfold yet.

Access to abortion is a constitutional right in the United States. The US Ambassador to the Vatican, whether or not Catholic, should reflect American values, not Catholic dogma. Caroline Kennedy is a fine choice.
The USSR and other communist states never refused an American ambassador because the US choice was not a Marxist. Why should the Catholic Church be permitted to impose an ideological litmus test on the Ambassador that President Obama appoints. The US Ambassador should be urging a change in backwards Catholic dogma. If the Vatican refuses Caroline Kennedy, it will embarrass the Pope, not Obama. If the Vatican refuses to accept Kennedy, Obama should leave the post vacant or appoint a foreign service officer as charge d'affaires who will defend the pro-choice policies of the United States.

Kmiec thought he had a chance and he has done everything to defend Obama's indefensible anti-life record. Kmiec is disconnected from reality and from how the Vatican really operates. They would never have accepted him as ambassador. What is stunning here is the Obama administration's blatant disrespect for the Church in floating names of candidates who clearly do no measure up with regard to Vatican standards and basic respect for the Church's fundamental teaching. Related to this slap is Obama's acceptance of Notre Dame's shameful invitation to speak at commencement.

Mr. Obama is a President who is trying to make an impact. In his sense of conscience he means well. He is a democrat and a rubber-stamp for every democratic position that their platform stands for. The democratic party in my country stands for many of the positions that the Catholic Church stands against. I now can't vote for any democrat because their party platform is that of the party of death. The mission of the party is to ignore the republican party vote. They are doing this because of a majority in the senate and congress. America has a dictatorship that has an agenda and the whole world not just the Catholic church is supposed to think it acceptable. Any Ambassador from the Obama administration must stand for democratic party positions. This party is wrong and the scope of damage that they are capable of has been demonstrated in a very short time since the new administration has taken over. Partisan politics is still the power play with this new administration. The democratic party platform is in direct opposition to that of the Catholic Church.

It is silly for the United States to have an ambassador to the Vatican. The Pope seems to have no problem meeting people (Obama, Speaker Pelosi) who support embryonic stem cell research, gay rights and abortion rights. The special treatment of one world religious leader is not in keeping with the American principal of not giving special consideration to a specific religion. Imagine the furor if we had and ambassadore to the Muslim religion. To let the Pope discriminate against a particular person due to their moral or religous beliefs is a attempt to impose a religous test for public office which is a violation of the Constitution.

There is NO justifiable reason for the POTUS to not have found a suitable candidate for this position. MA is solid
Democratic state with prominent Catholics, for example. I would contend this is a thinly veiled embargo on the Vatican by the administration. Not unlike what the USA has had on Cuba.

Obama's standard: If it is OK with you to kill your baby, it is OK with me. Democratic party's standard: Obama is our kind of guy.
Kmiec's belief: Obama is pro-life. Kmiec is confused. If Obama is pro-abortionist, so is Kmiec. Any question?
