Mary Ann Glendon refuses to accept Laetare Medal from Notre Dame
![]() Fr. John I. Jenkins / Mary Ann Glendon
Related articles:
.- Less than a month before Notre Dame’s Commencement, the former Vatican ambassador Mary Ann Glendon has written President Jenkins to refuse the university's Laetare Medal, rebuffing his claim that her acceptance speech would somehow “balance” the event. Mary Ann Glendon, a pro-life feminist and Harvard professor, today released an open letter to Notre Dame President John I. Jenkins, in which she told Jenkins that she could not speak alongside President Obama at the May 17th Commencement exercises. In her letter, Glendon related that she was initially “profoundly moved” at the news that she would receive Notre Dame’s coveted Laetare Medal. After hearing the news, she said she quickly began crafting an acceptance speech that she “hoped would be worthy of the occasion.” In March, Glendon said that she received a phone call from Fr. Jenkins informing her that she would not be giving the commencement speech, but that instead President Obama would fill that role. Upon learning of the change of plans, Glendon said that a “task that once seemed so delightful” had now been “complicated by a number of factors.” The first factor Glendon mentioned was her work as a “longtime consultant” to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which caused her to become “dismayed” that Notre Dame “planned to award the president an honorary degree.” This action, she said, would “disregard” the U.S. Bishop’s “Catholic’s in Political Life” document. Glendon also rebuffed the idea that the teaching “seeks to control or interfere” with a Catholic institution's “freedom to invite and engaged in serious debate whomever it wishes.” The former Vatican ambassador also took exception to Fr. Jenkin's “talking point” that awarding the Laetare Medal to her would “balance the event.” Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop John D’Arcy also criticized Jenkins’ “talking points” by calling them “wrong” and a “flawed justification.” “A commencement,” Ms. Glendon wrote, “is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.” She also worried that Notre Dame’s decision is having a “ripple effect” that is encouraging other Catholic institutions to ignore the U.S. Bishop’s teaching. “It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony,” she concluded. President Jenkins responded to the criticism by saying Notre Dame is “disappointed” with Glendon’s decision and that the university intends “to award the Laetare Medal to another deserving recipient.” Notre Dame said they will make the “announcement as soon as possible." Maryanne Glendon to be the person in charge of running Notre Dame suggestion give that Fr Jenkins some seriuos counselling, another job or send him back to school to learn the basic tenets of the Catholic faith!
Now Ms Glendon here has the moral integrity Maryanne is true to the faith on the pro life issue not a sycophantic panderer to the pro abortionists who all so lap up life and then use their own lives to work against the innocent voiceless defenceless unborn, our future , the next generation. Che brava encore Mary Ann what great names you have too Mary the mother of our lord st Anne too a prominent saint You dont need any awards from such fickle people at Notre Dame Mary Anne, as you so convincingly stand on your own Catholic faith well done to you from so many pro life people that like you too so respect the right to life of the unborn! Thanks for respecting the unborn over any award for that you deserve many honors, not Obama who has turned his back on the unborn! there is no honor in that at all! Deserting the most vunerable of all doesnt say much about anyone so Obama shouldnt be speaking at Notre Dame, let alone getting any award he Obama has no credibilty at all on the pro life issue!

Virgilijus Kaulius,
"Our role is not to attack a sitting President for "our" doctrinal reasons" In case you haven't been paying attention, 50 million innocent lives have been destroyed by abortion. This is an evil that can be known by any thinking person. You need not be Catholic to see the obvious. "Naked Public Square is NOT conditioned on OUR mere opinion! And an opinion it is" Please clarify. It's my opinion (and that of any clear thinking person) that killing children in the womb is a grave evil. Multiply that evil 50 million times....and YOUR opinion of this is?

Virgilijus of Vancouver - The Catholic Church is not being triumphalistic when it proclaims the truth. And in case you haven't been following along, the admonishment has been toward ND and Fr. Jenkins, not President Obama. Finally, the Church's teaching regarding abortion is not uniquely a doctrinal issue requiring divine revelation to understand. That abortion is wrong is known through reason and natural law, which is precisely why the Church can rightfully challenge even non-believers on this issue. So, quite the contrary - the only SAD behavior I see here is ND's and Fr. Jenkins' disobedience to truth and Obama's promotion of killing unborn children. Yes, what a sad state of affairs.

Mary Ann Glendon's courageous action brings memories of St. Joan of Arc. We don't burn at the stake but we do try to sear our humanist/Catholic? Faith in to the minds of true Catholics. The use of false doctrine such as “the Church's stand on life is not resolved” is a lie! To call those who are devout Catholic's "Right Wing!, Gasp! is stunning! Church doctrine and teachings are all right and conservative, very conservative, example: no homosexual "marriage", no abortion and no female priestesses, divorce not allowed.
Dr. Glendon’s actions are a perfect example of one who defends her faith. As a kid growing up in the 40’s and 50’s Notre Dame was the best example of Catholic, but today it wants to recognize and reward an individual who is the antithesis of Catholic! Notre Dame is a perfect example of our church’s weakness. That is to go along to get along with politicians in hope that government project funds for the weak and poor among us will get funding. This is made to sound like charity but government funding “charity” is not charity. If Obama had been turned down by Notre Dame because he does not represent the basic beliefs of this once great Catholic learning institution there would have been uproar for not having the “messiah” speak to the fold. But it would be a perfect example to all that we will stand and defend our faith! Our religion trumps politics! After all the Sacrament of Confirmation makes us all “Soldiers of Christ” and isn’t this exactly M

Mary Ann Glendon's integrity and deep Faith are truly a beacon for the rest of the Catholic world. May her example inspire our bishops and clergy to be more bold in their stance against the modern culture of death. I fully agree with Susan's suggestion (see comment on April 14, 2009 at 2:14 pm) that all graduating students show their support for Ms. Glendon by not attending the commencement ceremony, and requesting that their diplomas be mailed to them instead. Then Mr. Obama will have the audience he truly deserves at Notre-Dame University. Ms. Glendon's courage and integrity remind me of our own pro-life Catholics here in Canada who received the "Order of Canada" and then returned it when it was granted to Dr. Mortgentaler, the father of abortion in this country. God bless Catholics who love the Faith and stand up for it with courage and love.

R.P. Harrison from Elk Grove Village states that the Church's teaching on abortion is "a doctrine that is by no means settled in the Catholic Church." Will the ignorance never end? Even most non-Catholics know that the Catholic Church unequivocally opposes abortion and calls it a moral evil.
As for Niles from S.F., does Pope Benedict, the late Mother Theresa or Pope John Paul II make you proud to be Catholic, or do only dissenting and disobedient Catholics make you proud? BTW, God does not bless disobedience.

An important note to CNA-- I don't believe it was ever UofND's intention for her to give the commencement address-- she delivered it in 1996, and that is what she was referring to in her letter. It is not as if UofND took it away from her in March or something.
We need more women like Mary Ann Glendon. She is a woman of class and poise and is unafraid to stand up for the truth. It is not that she has "succumbed" to "siliness" but that she has taken a stand for the Truth of Christ in a country that is become so "open-minded" their brains have fallen out and so "tolerant" that they no longer stand for anything.

Our role is not to attack a sitting President for "our" doctrinal reasons: That is not justified theologically! It's time Catholicism grew up and behaved as a "community builder" of the New Millennium and not a community destroyer, which is just too easy to do! I pray Jesuit Discernment be better understood in grave matters as these when our presence in The Naked Public Square is NOT conditioned on OUR mere opinion! And an opinion it is! Mr Obama, Mrs Clinton and Mr 'Rosary beads' Biden are now exporting this murderous policy to other countries. One of the comments below maintains that Dr. Glendon is silly for refusing the Laetare medal. He is wrong. She is simply being principled and authentically Catholic. Abortion on demand, embryonic stem cell research, the conscience rights of Catholic health care workers, and the purveyance of abortion overseas by USAID is far from silly and far from merely "particular" issues. All of these issues strike at the very essence of human rights and the proper regarded to be afforded to human beings, especially the most marginalized. Moreover there can be NO SUCH THING as a Catholic fundamentalist because the our belief in sacred tradition. Hence, inform yourself, learn something new and lasting, and don't condescend to a person's principled stand. If Obama had an ounce of class he would not speak at Notre Dame because he does not believe in its basic belief and principles.

Dr. Glendon is a consistent Catholic who is unambiguous in her defense of the faith and the importance of the Church's mission to defend human life, which is NOT just one issue, but tens of millions of issues; for each human life murdered through this industry touches all those whom that one unique life could have touched, whether the two of us or all those graduates. Perhaps what people do not realize, is that to be pro-abortion means that you are willing to say to everyone born after 1973 that you are equally fine with their mother's choice to have murdered them in the womb as with her choice to allow them to live. Why should these students feel forced to honor a man who would have been complicit in their murder? A man who is just as content to have never seen them live -let alone graduate- as to see them alive? For the White House to use the word "inclusive" in their response is nothing less than hypocritical, if not condescending; especially when this man allowed the 'conscience clause' to fall by the wayside and promised to sign the FOCA which would force pro-lifers of any faith or of no faith to commit murder. No choice or inclusivity there, my friends!

Mary Glendon has made a foolish decision she will regret later. Her opposition to speaking on a platform with President Obama will ultimately detract from her place in academic history. Prof. Glendon's actions are exemplary. She has chosen the better part, i.e., she has chosen to be faithful to Christ and His Church. Too many universities have surrendered their Catholic identity for the sake of approval from a society oriented to a culture of death. When did the President of the United States become "persona non grata" at Catholic venues merely because of a postion he espoused on a particular issue?
