Dr. George Tiller, killed on Sunday morning in Wichita, Kansas

.- Prominent voices of the pro-life movement have repudiated the murder of the late-term abortion provider George Tiller, who was shot and killed Sunday morning at a Wichita Lutheran church.

Tiller was shot dead by an unidentified assailant shortly after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Wichita. The 67-year-old was one of the few U.S. physicians who still performed late-term abortions in the country.

Troy Newman, President of the Kansas-based Operation Rescue said in a statement that his organization “has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List -a nationwide network of Americans dedicated to representing pro-life women in politics-  also condemned "this anti-life act in the strongest of terms."

"The heart of the pro-life movement is one founded in love. Without this driving powerful center no justice can possibly be achieved. Authentic progress in women's rights has always encompassed the protection of human rights of every person across the board. The rights of one human being can never be honored by diminishing or ignoring the rights of another. This week as we gather for our annual June Tea event, themed Love Lets Live, we will lift up George Tiller's loved ones in prayer," Dannenfelser said.

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, expressed his sadness at hearing of George Tiller's murder.

"At this point, we do not know the motives of this act, or who is behind it, whether an angry post- abortive man or woman, or a misguided activist, or an enemy within the abortion industry, or a political enemy frustrated with the way Tiller has escaped prosecution. We should not jump to conclusions or rush to judgment."

"But whatever the motives," Pavone emphasized, "we at Priests for Life continue to insist on a culture in which violence is never seen as the solution to any problem. Every life has to be protected, without regard to their age or views or actions."

Shaun Kenney, executive director of American Life League, explained that leaders within the pro-life movement "often discuss justice in connection with our mission to end the tragedy of abortion. Today, Dr. George Tiller's life ended in an act defying those principles."
"With genuine sorrow, we reflect on today's events in prayer. Justice for all human beings includes the lives of those with whom we fundamentally disagree as well as the victims of abortion. We firmly hope the perpetrators of this act are apprehended, that the facts be made known, and that justice according to the law is preserved and dispensed," Kenney said.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney, a former national spokesperson for Operation Rescue  who had just completed leading two weeks of prayer vigils in Wichita during the latest trial of Dr. Tiller, also denounced the shooting, and said that he and other pro-life leaders will hold a news conference in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday "to discuss the impact the shooting of Dr. George Tiller will have on the pro-life movement and the Supreme Court."

Tiller began providing abortion services in 1973 but during the 80's became one of the most prominent and vocal late-term abortionists.

In 1991, his abortion clinic was the center of the "Summer of Mercy" protests organized by Operation Rescue. The protests drew thousands of pro-life  activists to Wichita for peaceful demonstrations marked by civil disobedience and mass arrests.

After the protests, Tiller kept mostly to his heavily guarded clinic, but remained prominent in the news. In 1993, Tiller was shot in both arms by a protestor.

Tiller was a significant donor to the political campaigns of the former Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius, the  pro-abortion Catholic recently appointed as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Tiller contributed to Sebelius directly and to political action committees that he controlled. During Sebelius' tenure as governor, Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann declared that Kansas had become "infamous for being the late-term abortion center for the Midwest."

Sebelius repeatedly vetoed legislation that would have affected Tiller's business.

According to the Wichita Police Department, a 51-year-old suspect was arrested three hours after the shooting about 170 miles from Wichita.

I find it interesting that all these pro-abortion folks are so tolerant of abortion, but have so much hate for Christians. Or so much sympathy for Dr. Tiller, but no compassion for the dead babies. Over 50 million babies have been murdered in this country. So our country permits the sacrifice of babies because of a woman's choice, give me a break. I bet the baby wouldn't have chosen death, if he/she had a choice. Could you have been pro-choice when it comes to slavery & not be pro-slavery. That is how ridiculous the arguement is of pro-choice people who say they are not pro-abortion. I was adopted and if my birth mother would have chosen death for me, my three kids would not be on this earth. Abortion is a selfish act that is interfering with God's plan for that child. And people seem to forget the tragic consequences that come after abortion.

While I certainly don't condone the execution of monsters like this, I cannot help but to feel that the world is somehow a better place now that he's gone.

I find it very interesting that someone who wants to protect life instead chooses to take it. I get so sick of the "moral" issue. When does someone elses life become your business? This woman had the legal right to abort her baby the doctor was following the law. There was only one person here breaking the law. Where exactly do you get the right to enforce your morals on others? I think its immoral to enforce your beliefs and morals on others.. does that mean I have the right to go kill someone trying to enforce their beliefs or morals on another person or does that just make me as big of an idiot as these pro lifers?

For so long, the anti-abortion right has done everything BUT call for murder of doctors who perform abortions. Now they want to take the moral high ground and claim "it was not us".

The machine continues their daily attacks on all abortionists as "murderers." Randall Terry, the founder of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue said today: "George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God... Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder....Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God."

If you take these words literally, you might pull the trigger to "make America safe" or to protect "babies". After all, "Murderers" should be punished, right? An eye for an eye? And once in a while someone DOES do "something"about it", and then all of these "Christian" Hate Mongers says that they were only speaking metaphorically or "spiritually" when they call for violence or when they say things like "abortionists are murderers like Hitler!" Today "pro-life" leaders are busy ducking any personal responsibility for people acting on their words. These people who make a living by stirring up the extremists never take responsibility.

It is a shame anytime someone is murdered. It is a tragic loss of a human life. I cannot say I feel sad for who was killed as terrible as that may sound. I don't condone murder. I'm personally against murder. But if someone chooses to murder George Tiller the late term abortionist, who am I to impose my beliefs on that person. I believe that this is a perfect example of pro choice. The killer "chose" to murder Tiller. He knew the facts and made a choice. Same as abortion. Now, if we lay Dr. Tiller's body next to those dismembered, ripped and torn bodies of all the baby victims he murdered in the womb of their mothers. Which would make you more sick? The fact that Tiller was considered a person while the many thousands of babies he killed were not, says a world of differance. Now Tiller will face eternal Judgement. His killer may face legal judgement. Fear more for Tiller.

Dr Tiller has been evaluated by his peers, and his records checked. He did late abortions only if it saved the mother's life or health or if the fetus was abnormal and not viable such has having no brain or having a malignant non-treatable tumor: the private records of the patients were rightly not revealed to the public. This tragic assault and murder of a medical provider is a good example of the results of fanatic pressure on this single issue cause. What will happen to this cause now? What if the defenders of their rights start to believe they must fight back violently? Maybe it is time to cut back on the rhetoric.

Being pro life must mean exactly that. Murder is an evil act; it cannot be justified in Tiller's case. There is a just outcry against his murder, but similar public outrage must also be directed against the killing of pre-born innocents, whose brutal deaths are sanctioned and promoted by governments worldwide.

From the posts on this article, it would seem that the pro-life movement supports the targeting of American citizens with whom they disagree theologically,. I think this is support for terrorism and should be investigated just as we do with Islamic fundamentallists who reject the rule of law.

i pray for dr. tillman's family. judgement should be left to God. here on earth, too many times, we feel the right to play God...don't! bottom line, "love one another as i have loved you". you can't call yourself a Christian and take innocent lives---from conception to natural death!

You are at the abortuary. You see an abortionist preparing to kill another unborn or partially born child. You know that if you try to protest the police will be called, you will be jailed and the child will be killed because it is YOU who are breaking the law, not the abortionist. Do you walk away
or do you stop the killing by killing the abortionist, because if you merely disable the abortionist you will only delay the abortion and again, YOU will be breaking the law.

This example is not to suggest that George Tiller's killing was (legally or otherwise) justified, or that similar violence (i.e. shooting abortionists) should be used to stop abortion. However if a "just war" (or capital punishment) scenario of protecting the innocent by killing the enemy if necessary is used, what then is the difference of wars that society (and the Church) accept where killing is justified, and a war to protect the innocent of innocents by preventing the innocents murder?

The answer seems to be evident, the difference is between man's and God's law or rather how that law of "Thou shall not kill" is applied.

The solution is to stop the killing of babies. The ongling holocaust is what gives rise to ancillary disorders, like vigilantism.

If you can base your argument for “legal” abortion on the fact that a mother has the “right to terminate” the life of the infant in her womb because she does not want it to exist any longer, is that any different from premeditated murders?

Is the pregnant mothers “ownership” of the person to be terminated that authors the “right”?
Could the same mother ‘eliminate’ her two year old child?
What’s the difference?
Is the two year old part of society and there by protected by the “state” who could take the child from her if they knew her intentions?
Then who actually “owns” our children?
When does the ownership take place?

If it’s at conception then exactly what is it that the mother “owns”?
What is it that mothers and fathers are so concerned about and law enforcement, medics, hospital personnel, and doctors use every medical technology available to track and care for that is in the womb during a woman’s pregnancy?

Well if it isn’t a human life them what’s all the fuss about?

But if it is, then abortion is just and another kind of premeditated murder and no different than the terrible killing of Dr. Tiller in Kansas yesterday.
The ONE question that MUST BE ANSWERED for society is; when does life begin?

Unfortunately, like our president, no one in government wants to answer that question but they are perfectly willing to make laws based on their “assumptions” regarding it.

Live a life of intentional killing and one has to realize that they might die the same way.Abortion spells DEATH.This isn't to say that murder is okay.Wouldn't it be easier to live a life without abortion being a rally cry. No wonder someone gets sick and tired of it all and reacts rashly. The whole deal is miserable any way you look at it. God intended that life be a celebration of love and not the continual dispute over issues of morbid death scenes.Abortion, war, capital punishment, man's inhumanity to man or woman, when will it all stop!Humanity is it's own worst enemy!!!

Despite his chosen profession, Dr. Tiller was a child of God. My prayers are with his family, and may the Blessed Virgin intercede for him to our Heavenly Father. Lord Jesus, please look with mercy upon Dr. Tiller.

To say Tiller was not the villain of the pro-life movement would be dishonest. It is unfathomable how a seemingly educated, church-going Christian could do more harm to the unity of the Body of Christ than did Tiller, who seemingly had no reservations about slaughtering thousands of innocents. He did not get what he deserved. He deserved to be treated with human dignity, as did the countless number of individual human souls that no doubt, as part of God's justice, will now confront him.

May his soul and the souls of all those that he robbed of their earthly journey rest in peace.

While the justified war theory certainly can be applied to the war over abortion, we have not exhausted the means of nonviolent prayer and fasting. I am convinced that if all Catholics prayed and fasted we could win this war through non violence and end abortion in this Nation.

The anti-abortion groups denegrate their opponents, accuse them of mass murder, and then shed crococile tears when a Doctor is murdered. Their statements reveal that their real concern is for the fall out it may bring to their movement.
