Catholic bishops condemn Tiller slaying
![]() Bishop Michael Jackels / Cardinal Justin Rigali

.- Several Catholic bishops have denounced the shooting of the abortion doctor George Tiller, offering their prayers for Tiller and his family while reiterating that the pro-life position can never serve as a justification for crimes. “It is my prayer that the Tiller family find consolation, that Dr. George Tiller find mercy and the fulfillment of the great hope of Christians, and that all will find peaceful and legal means to resolve differences,” Bishop Jackels said. Archbishop of Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali also responded to the crime. Speaking on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) as chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, the cardinal said the USCCB and its members “have repeatedly and publicly denounced all forms of violence in our society, including abortion as well as the misguided resort to violence by anyone opposed to abortion.” "Such killing is the opposite of everything we stand for, and everything we want our culture to stand for: respect for the life of each and every human being from its beginning to its natural end. We pray for Dr. Tiller and his family." Archbishop of Denver Charles J. Chaput, a Kansas native, was joined by the Kansas-born Auxiliary Bishop of Denver James D. Conley in a Monday statement on the murder. "The violence at the heart of every abortion and the abortion industry itself will never be ended by counter-violence. The killing of George Tiller is an inexcusable crime that cuts against everything pro-life Americans, and especially religious believers, stand for,” the two prelates said. "We pray for Dr. Tiller and his family and for an end to the culture of violence that this country seems unable to escape. We ask Catholics across Colorado to do the same." Subscriber comments:

Althought it is a sad thing when someone is murdered, this man murdered thousands of innocent babies. How fast the bishops are to condemn this murder, yet how slow they were for even one fourth of them to condemn Obama's with Notre Dame. I think our Bishops in general have been asleep at the switch. I keep hearing articles in praise of the Bishops, let be honesty they need some condemnation.

Pro-life means pro-life for everyone. Although I strongly opposed Dr. Tiller, taking a life at any stage of one's life is absolutely wrong. I do hope that one day all life will be respected and this debate will end.

I entirely agree with Ms.Catherine Kennedy herein above. The strong condemnation by the Catholic Bishops and Cardinal only reflects the ever living mercy and forgiving tennets of the Christian faith which was first demonstrated on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ. No one has any right to take away the life of another creation of the Lord and whatever the depth of the sin committed by a person, it is the promise given by the merciful Lord that if he repents deeply and comes back to the right path, he will be saved. Therefore, I, as a true follower of Jesus Christ from India, join the Catholic heirarchy everywhere in strongly condemning the incident and pray that the soul of Dr.Tiller rest in peace.

I'm saddened by some of the responses from the original story breaking on how this killing can be justifiable.
In NO way can the murder of a human life be justified no matter how many other lives that person took. Pro-lifers are not pragmatists. The irony of such a pragmatic approach is that now 10 more late term abortion doctors will crop up just like him. We were so close to bringing him to his earthly justice legally as one of the last late-term abortionists. Armed now with sympathy, the abortion lobby will create a fresh demand for late-term abortionists. This is a disaster for the pro-life community and it will put us on the defensive for years to come. Tiller's killer is NOT PRO-LIFE and neither are those who are heartened in the slightest by this terrible news.

i in agreement with Mrs. Kennedy! Life no matter what, young or old should never be taken away but this simple fact should not stand in the way of punishing the criminals who committed the crime of taking the innocent man's life - so justice is done and his family can have closure.

The Class, Compassion and the Grace of the American Roman Catholic pro life clergy is so truly on display here!
No one ever ever condones nor excuses such an act ie murder! We accept every word that the eminent Clergy here said! We too affirm that others are aware of such incidents but please lets NOT FORGET that people of the pro life side often get threatened too!even far worse at times! So everyone should work for peaceful outcomes to this fundamental issue! No one should ever stoop so low as to take a life even that of a late term pro abortionist like Dr Tiller! Life is not just for the privileged, the planned, the perfect Dr Tiller was not perfect but no one had the right to take the life of this man even though he has taken the lives of so many innocent, voiceless, defenceless unborn Respect ALL Human life from conception onwards!Simple as that!
