NASA goes ‘completely off-mission’ with LGBT Pride Month, critic charges

.- The Acting Administrator of NASA and the Equal Opportunity Programs Office at Goddard Space Flight Center have encouraged agency employees to take part in “LGBT Pride Month,” leading to criticism that the action takes the space agency “completely off-mission” and promotes homosexual activism.

An announcement posted at the website of Goddard Space Flight Center’s Equal Opportunity Programs Office began by referencing President Bill Clinton’s 1999 declaration of June as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.” The announcement said the first “Gay Pride parade” was held on June 28, 1970 on the first anniversary of the “Stonewall Rebellion.”

The Stonewall event marked a New York City riot in which patrons of a gay bar resisted police who were attempting to enforce liquor laws at a Greenwich Village inn.

A contemporary New York Times report characterized the patrons as going on a “rampage” and said four policemen were injured in the initial violence.

The NASA announcement characterized the police as “harassing and arresting gay and transgendered persons.”

“The patrons fought back in a protest that lasted for the next three days,” the announcement continued. “For many gays and lesbians, this protest marks the first organized effort in the United States by gays and lesbians to openly gain equality under the law, and gave birth to the modern gay civil rights movement.”

“During Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, we focus on our efforts to embrace acceptance and welcome diversity in communities regardless of sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian groups celebrate this special time with pride parades, picnics, parties, memorials for those lost from HIV and AIDS, and other group gathering events that attract thousands upon thousands of individuals.”

The announcement then described “symbols of LGBT pride” and referred employees to internal sites for more information.

Christopher J. Scolese, Acting Administrator for NASA, also mentioned the Stonewall riots in a message about “Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month” sent out to agency employees. He characterized the “celebration” of LGBT Pride as a commemoration of the riots, which he said were an act of “rejecting discrimination and standing up for the American values of fairness and equality.”

“This month-long observance gives all of us an opportunity to appreciate the accomplishments of LGBT Americans and celebrate the many contributions members of the LGBT community make daily to the fabric of American life,” Scolese continued.

He mentioned “LGBT people” such as Todd Hawley, co-founder of the International Space University, and atmospheric scientist James Pollack.

Scolese encouraged employees to take part in “LGBT Pride Month” activities planned at their NASA center or to organize an activity if there is no planned event.

“Take time to learn about the contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans, and celebrate the diversity that has helped shape and strengthen NASA and our nation,” his statement closed.

John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council, said Scolese’s announcement was “stunning” and charged that it promoted activities which “‘celebrate’ aberrant forms of sexual conduct.” He called the action “completely off-mission” and counterproductive to the best interests of children, families and “the common good of society.”

“NASA's work is critical, exacting and if not done properly, life threatening. With all the challenges, and tragedies that NASA has had in its past, it is unconscionable that its administrator would promote this type of a distraction and internally divisive social activism.”

He said the action breeds “bad internal morale” and disrespects the consciences of “tens of thousands, if not the vast majority, of NASA’s own 300,000 employees” who object to “the promotion of sexual activism.”

“Promotions of specific sexual orientations over others clearly is outside of NASA's mission and is being paid for by taxpayers’ dollars,” Stemberger said. “NASA should be for advancing scientific space research objectives, not engaging in homosexual activism.”

The hatred and intolerance that these commenters are showing toward gay people and the rights they deserve is the reason why I left the Catholic Church. Jesus said love everyone, no exceptions. Hatred and intolerance is NOT Christian. You people should be ashamed of yourselves and the church needs to get OUT of politics.

Hi Amy, you obviously haven't read my post, or you just picked and chose what to read, just as you how you probably read the bible. I didnt say you HATE people, I said this is how hate is bred.

Then you go about stereotyping all gay people into having only 1 kind of behavior. This is ignorance at best, and my point is proven.

LGBT sex makes sense only as an urge to perform a sexual act with no intended purpose, except ones own personal satisfaction. LGBT people are no ethnic group. They are not black or white or oriental, indian, hispanic but the variation of this behavior is just that and this behavior is in all ethnic groups. Heterosexual is also a part of a more common form of behavior that also exists among all people. This distinction in a behavior pattern doesn't merit any special rights or special recognition. There is nothing cleaver or special about LGBT people or heterosexual ones. There is not anything to be considered "Civil Rights or Equality Issues "regarding this whole issue. Recognizing "Common Ground" is tolerance for the differences in behavior and in learning to be kind to each other,is a lesson in getting along with each other. Marriage is a Catholic understanding of it on this website, and as it is proclaimed to be between a man and a woman,so that the whole church is to be obedient to this teaching. This is all a part of being one mind in the Catholic understanding of what Christ taught. What "Our Society Teaches" is strictly inferior to Catholic teaching.

Jimmy: Your misuse of the term "hate" is part of the reason why people aren't gung-ho about jumping on the "tolerance" bandwagon. "Hate" does not mean disagreeing with one's behaviors. Surely you have family members who do and say things you disagree with but, in all likelihood, you do not hate them for their actions and surely your disagreeing with their actions does not lead you to acts of violence, right? No rational or honest person will say that there's absolutely nothing their family/friend do that doesn't irritate them in some way. So if that standard applies to you, why not those of us who disagree with homosexual behavior or, more over, the notion that we must unquestioningly accept it as the source and summit of all that is good and noble?

We get more than a little fed up with people accusing us of "hatred" when we're doing what is our God given right to free expression of religion AND speech.

I have no problem with people who have same-sex attraction. But I do have a problem with homosexual behavior because it is objectively disordered and a sin, just as premarital sex or extramarital sex is a sin. It is NOT the orientation that's the problem, but the BEHAVIOR. Christian teaching on that standard is equitable to all persons in that all are called to refrain from sexual activity that is not in the context of a heterosexual marriage.
The inclination to same-sex attraction may not be a choice, but those BEHAVIORS are.

Enough already. Perhaps government can legislate homoseuality, now they legislate that we must approve of this behaviour. Now it's a crime to deny gayism is right behaviour. By logical extension soon it will be a crime to support a religion that opposes any aberrant behaviour. Our church is being systematically marginalized.

From a secular viewpoint the reason that marriage between a man and a woman is recognized as a special legal situation is for the perpetuation of our society. That is the only union where new citizens can be created ensuring the continuity of our society. From a religious standpoint it is recognized as the only viable marriage covenant again as the commandment to be fruitful and multiply. Once your break away from these basic principle then you can not draw the line anywhere because anything goes including polygamy, getting married to your dog, children, etc.

My response to Bard Thom: Marriage is a holy union between a man and a woman. It is not solely an economic issue. As far as contract law is concerned, gays can work out their own contracts regarding property just like any business partners can. They do not have to marry to do so. My response to Jimmy from Canada: No one hates Gays here. As Catholics we cannot morally condone homosexuality as normal. It is inherently abnormal and un-natural. Additionally you mention that being gay isn't a "choice". I can say the same thing about a serial killer, a rapist, or for that matter a neurotic. It isn't their choice. They were born a serial killer. Does that excuse their behaviour? Finally, the little item about Jesus loving everyone and everything. Not true. Jesus does not tell the adulterous woman go. He tells her to go and sin no more. He does not tell the money lenders in the temple its ok. He whips them and drives them out of the temple. Read the Bible. It is not all love and joy. There is plenty of punishment and admonitions to go around. This fantasy theology of an all loving, ever loving God is just that. Fantasy. There is right and wrong. There are consequences for wrong, immoral behaviour.

Did these scientists and engineers make their contributions as scientists and engineers, or as “gays”? Did any of the heterosexual scientists and engineers make their contributions as “heteros”, or as human beings? What is the source of “merit”? That is the main question which the “LGBT community activists” want to blur. Does one who is excellent at chess, and who makes a contribution to science, do so as a chessmaster, or as a scientist? Be specific.

Our tax dollars at work!

Imagine the reaction to Christian Month, Jewish Month, Conservative Month, Traditional Marriage Month...

We are told by our Lord that when these outrages happen, and continue to get worse, we are to look up, for our Redemption approaches.

I noted the approach of the active homosexual agenda in 1981. The Republicans were in the White House then and they couldn't and/or didn't hold it back. Since this is a Catholic site I guess I can say that we have the unchanging command to love those who offend and persecute us, given by the One who does not change. At the same time, my husband and I supported Proposition 8 with money and votes, as is our civil right.

I hope posters will pay special attention to the contemporary account by the New York Times of the Stonewall incident.

David Larsen, did you really just say blacks, Jews, Catholics, and homosexuals have OCD because they want basic civil rights? OK, I actually have OCD, I don't think you know what it is. And these people aren't trying to assert themselves "over" others... they just want equal rights, they want to be considered as equal to everyone else-- and why aren't they? Yeah, I know, "homosexuality is unnatural"; well, it's true you can't make a baby that way, but so what? The world has enough babies as is, better to adopt than make more people anyway; and who are they hurting? We don't force straight couples to procreate, they can marry purely for love, so why can't gay couples do the same?

I wonder if Mr. Scolese's statement also shared that those who practice homosexual acts die 20 years earlier than those that don't since the mechanics of anal sex are one of the most efficient ways of spreading disease and cancers. I wonder if he shared that homosexuality goes against the natural order and denies the complimentary design of men's and women's bodies. He should have announced that there has been no evidence that shows that a 'homosexual gene' exists. But there is evidence that homosexuals belong to the larger group of people genetically predisposed to risk-taking...those willing to 'go outside of the boxs' for satisfaction. This would explain the fact that 75% of homosexuals interviewed have had over 100 sex partners in their life. We should not think of sexual gratification as a 'right'. Not all sexual expressions are equal, despite what Mr. Scolese wants you to believe. His announcement should have been to warn of the life-shortening effects of homosexual activity, it's disordered nature and the promiscuity that accompanies it. Those with same-sex attraction should be encouraged to resist and come to terms with the fact that not all sexual expressions are acceptable, healthy or ordered. He should also have announced that all people possess equal dignity, including those with same-sex attraction. As a christian, I can treat people with love and kindness without condoning disordered and damaging sexual acts.
Now, how about THAT for an announcement!

Discrimination against homosexuals is not equal to discrimination by race or salary, for instance. In all human races, males and females have clear differences with the sole purpose of perpetuating human race. There is no room for sexual orientations, because homosexuas would violate actual purpose of sexs. Than simple.

We need to organize a response to NASA and to Congress protesting this action. This was a breech of faith with the taxpayers. If the gay event were instead a religious one, like a veneration of the the 10 Commandments, there would be wide protests that the division of Church and State had been violated.

Here, the celebration of homosexuality is a form of faith system, one premised upon violation of another faith system. NASA overtly violated its obligations to the citizenry.

Somewhere in some right-wing intolerant book I read this:
Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

An obsessive compulsive disorder is when one group of individuals tries to assert itself over all other groups of individuals. Not very long ago homosexuality was taught in psychology as a mental disease. Now it is normal. Many people were taught that it was abnormal so it will take along time for these individuals to find acceptance this way. The issue is a forced one when any group is recognized because of some basic difference. Blacks suffered because of color. Jews and Catholics because of religion. Homosexuals because of sexual preference. It is some times the emphasis on the difference that causes the discrimination. All these groups could be accused of some obsessive compulsive disorder. They seem to be pushing themselves on society in some way.
As a Catholic I think everyone should worship God and believe in Jesus Christ and live lovingly through the power of the Holy Spirit. I wish there would be a month to honor God. This would be imposing "Religion" on others and as a separation of church and state issue it would be intolerable! I would have an obsessive compulsive disorder and would be psychologically disturbed and labeled "Religious Fanatic"! Sound Familiar?

I am reading your site, due to the NASA article concerning gay people. I am from a Greek orthodox family, I am not gay, and I clearly understand NASA is just reaching out to people who are victimized by backwards thinking, simply because they don’t want a relapse of what was done in prior generations to different ethnicities.
I was just wondering what you have against gay people? I thought it was a crime to hate anyone, according to Jesus himself. These are the kind of articles which breed hatred and hate groups, and create extremists who shoot up museums.
Being gay isn’t a choice, and maybe if you actually listened to what the brilliant minds at NASA say, you would understand that.

Economic issues matter and marriage is an economic issue. Studies show that married people are slightly healthier (less costs) and wealthier (pay more taxes) than their single counterparts and this is true for gay people as well. That is because the contract of marriage comes with thousands of rights and responsibilities. And gay people deserve the right to contract.
