Vatican paper calls Nobel Prize for Obama 'premature,' highlights his abortion stance

President Barack Obama

.- The semi-official Vatican daily, L’Osservatore Romano, has called the decision to award President Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize premature and more of an invitation to choose peace through politics. The award is also questionable because of his position on various bio-ethics issues, especially abortion.

The article points out that “the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama has taken everyone somewhat by surprise, first and foremost the U.S. president himself.”

“During the last 90 years,” L'Osservatore noted, “the prize has never been awarded to a sitting U.S. president—when it was awarded to Jimmy Carter in 2002 he had been out of office already for some time—[but was] involved in politics and susceptible, therefore, to making a range of decisions related to peace.”

Perhaps for this reason, the newspaper said, “Analysts have almost unanimously interpreted his selection as a way of pressuring Obama to make pacifist choices as his administration continues forward.”

L'Osservatore also questioned the administratoion's actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying that the decisions seem aimed at trying to find a middle way between “fidelity to the pacifist statements made during the campaign season and a more realistic policy, which some have defined as a continuation of that of the ‘warmonger’ Bush.”

This back-and-forth policy, the paper observed, is very similar to the approach that Obama has taken to “the great bioethics issues, with abortion being first and foremost.” His way of doing things has generated great controversy among Catholics in the country, the daily added.

The Vatican newspaper also brought to mind Mother Teresa being honored with the Peace Prize in 1979, and said, “Obama ought to recall that in 1979 he was preceded by Mother Teresa, who had the courage to state in her acceptance speech that the harshest war with the greatest number of ‘fallen’ is the practice of abortion, legalized and facilitated as well by the international structures.”

Pointing out an inconsistency, L'Osservatore noted that Pope John Paul II was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for year but was never chosen for the award, not even in 2003 “after his condemnation of the war in Iraq.”

“Pope Wojtyla was considered by the members of the committee as too ‘conservative’ in other areas, and they feared that awarding it to him would been seen as favoring the Catholic Church over other religions. Their fears were evidently overcome in the much more controversial case of the selection of Obama,” the Vatican daily said, noting that the selection process has become mired in being politically correct.

Nevertheless, the article concluded, “at the same time, as the director of the Holy See’s Press Office has stated, we cannot help but rejoice at the recognition of President Obama’s efforts at nuclear disarmament and his personal disposition towards a policy that seeks peace more than the affirmation of U.S. power in the world.”

Please. Just RELAX. You do not have to be concerned about O'Bama; he is the Pres. of the United States. He Says what he says to get re-elected....not; to get to Heaven. If you at least, try, to get to Heaven, then you say, each day, The Apostle's Creed, and pray to the Blessed Virgin and the Saints to intercede for YOU. Easy....JUST DO IT. Eddie, from Port Orange, Florida. God Bless. It is not hard..It just takes a few seconds of your time.

After attending the very moving and spiritually-filled Day of Prayer and Healing at Sylvan Springs in Rome City, IN yesterday as part of the celebration of Our Lady of America's message to Sr. Neuzil on Oct 13, 1956, I can say with certainty that the only peace prize that will truly mean anything is the one that will come AFTER the US Bishops enthrone Our Lady of America in the National Basilica to The Immaculate Conception in Washington DC as Our Lady asked so long ago. I must ask the Bishops why they have not acted on this CANONICALLY-APPROVED apparition and the attending messages given by Our Lady in Rome City: "What's the problem?" We have images of Our Lady from practically EVERY OTHER COUNTRY on this globe but NOT ONE image of Our Lady from these United States in the National Basilica. Please do as Our Lady asks. To read the messages for yourself and learn about the ongoing efforts to save the property as a place of prayer and retirement home for priests in need, go to www.oltiv.org Please do what you can to help. The safety of our world may depend on this a lot more than on Mr. Obama's awards received after a few months in office.

So (the article said that) the Holy See rejoiced at Obama's "personal disposition towards a policy that seeks peace more than the affirmation of U.S. power in the world"? Historically, wasn't it US power in the world that saved the Vatican and Italy and other nations in World War II? There is both hypocrisy and thoughtlessness in assuming that peace always consists of not fighting. If someone attacks a child, it is peaceful for the child if we do not fight off the attacker? When Jesus said "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth," I do not believe He was referring to cowardly submission to evil, but rather about those who are meek toward the Almighty. If the US remains powerful in the world and true to the responsibilities thereof, that power will help prevent wars by not encouraging tyrants and terrorists. In this as yet imperfect world, it takes material power until spiritual power has done its work sufficiently.

This is a newspaper article not the words of the Vatican, so stop accusing the Vatican of the comments in the paper.

Firstly, who exactly is the "Vatican" anyway? I would like to know their specific names. Secondly, certainly many Catholics are wondering why the "Vatican" felt the pressure to comment when they could have remained silent on this one -- which would have been far more prudent.

The director of the Holy See's Press office better "pray" that Prez. Obama and the current American Admiistration does not have their way. If America does not remain the "World Power", no nation would be safe. How about Iran working on their nuclear weapons? Prez.Obama is doing nothing to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons and the United Nations is no help. Nothing but "lip service". Had France, Germany, and Russia stood together, with the United States, the world leaders would have gotten rid of Iraq's tyrants and other tyrants around the world. The United States would not have had to go to war. If the United Nations, including the current America Administration; had less corrupted leaders and leaders with integrity and courage, then and only then could peace be entertained and perhaps even achieved. (who is behind the terrorists around the world)? Pres. Obama's ideology along with his administration is not "peace" of the Mind and Soul. Forcing the Americans to pay for abortions around the world, sterilization, euthanasia homosexual education(as normal) to kindergardeners.More chance for AID's, is criminal. Taxing the citizens to the point of slavery, is not Freedom and without Freedom there is no "Peace".

Considering Mother Teresa said, 'the greatest destroyer of peace is abortion' and her warning that abortion would eventually lead to nuclear war, the abortion president's award is, at best, an oxymoron.

What the heck is going on up there in the Vatican??? It is unbelievable that our Holy Father has not CONDEMNED what Barrack Husein Obama stands for! Does he not know that this man supports abortion, even partial birth abortion? That even if an aborted baby is born alive, Obama does NOT want care for that living child since the intent was to kill the child in the first place! Does our Holy Father not know that Obama supports embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, homsexual 'marriage'? And Vatican 'officals' have the nerve to call Bush a 'war monger'! Bush kept us safe after 9/11. Bush did NOT act alone to retaliate against the bombing of our country (read SELF DEFENSE)- until the USA Congress and Senate voted to support the war. Don't think for one moment that this President will accomplish that. I am sickened over the confusion the Vatican officials have caused regarding Obama and there will be an enormous price to be paid for this. The flock is scattered and the Shepherd is no where to be found. Satan is alive and well.

I honestly do not get it anymore. It was one thing for the Vatican to come out last week when we were all surprised by the selection of Obama for the peace prize. But, now so many days later, why and how is the vatican still "rejoicing" in this award? They correctly point out that Obama has taken stands in direction opposition to core Catholic teaching and values in abortion and gay marriage, yet they still "rejoice". While I think Obama was not a good selection, I would have less of a problem if the Vatican said something like we are e\"encouraged" by teh selection of Obama as it MAY lead toward peace. But to use the word "rejoice"-to take delight in this award is incredulous! I have a hard time believeing that the Holy Father in fact is "rejoicing" over this award. This is why teh Catholic Church in America is fractured- with statemenst like this from the leadership of the Church-we simply do not have an organzied and understandable message to the faithful. This artcile and language is a grave diservice to the faithful.
