Planned Parenthood says U.S. bishops have ‘hijacked’ health care reform with Stupak Amendment

Serrin Foster / Cecile Richards

.- Planned Parenthood has condemned the addition of the Stupak/Pitts Amendment to the U.S. House’s proposed health care reform legislation, saying it would undermine private health plans that cover abortion. One pro-life leader said the criticism, which characterized pro-lifers as hijackers, was an ‘over the top’ attempt at self-promotion.

Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, claimed in a Nov. 7 statement that the Stupak Amendment to Congress’ proposed health care bill has further reach than the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funding for most abortions.

She also charged that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and “anti-choice opponents” have been able to “hijack” health care reform in their “dedicated attempt” to ban all legal abortion. Richards characterized the USCCB as a hijacker twice in her 700-word statement.

“On behalf of the millions of women Planned Parenthood health centers serve, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America has no choice but to oppose HR 3962,” Richards said, charging that the bill would violate President Obama’s promise that no one would be forced to lose his or her present coverage under health reform.

Saying the Stupak Amendment would eliminate private health insurance coverage of abortion, she claimed the majority of these plans currently offer abortion coverage.

Other sources have questioned this claim. In July, the Congressional Quarterly quoted Robert Zirkelbach, a spokesman for America’s Health Insurance Plans, the insurance industry’s trade association.

“Most insurers offer plans that include this coverage but most employers choose not to offer it as part of their benefits package,” he said.

Kathleen Sebelius during her confirmation hearings to become Secretary for Health and Human Services in April told the Senate Finance Committee that private plans do not cover abortion except in “limited circumstances,” the New York Times reports.

Richards’ attack on the Stupak Amendment continued by saying its allowance for a separate, single-service rider to cover abortion is illogical because women do not plan to have unintended pregnancies or pregnancies that “require ending the pregnancy.”

She said it was “telling” that most House members who supported the Stupak Amendment do not support the overall legislation, alleging that they have used health care reform to advance their “extreme, ideological agenda.”

“Planned Parenthood applauds the members of Congress who stood up for women’s health and voted to oppose the Stupak/Pitts amendment. We will work with those members to rectify this travesty,” she commented.

Feminists for Life President Serrin M. Foster praised the passage of the Stupak Amendment, saying in a statement:

"Thanks to Members of Congress who led the effort and the activism of thousands of FFL members, women will not have to face additional pressure to have abortion. We can refocus our efforts on meaningful, holistic solutions that everyone can support."

Speaking with CNA in a Monday phone interview, Foster called the Stupak Amendment a “huge victory for women.”

“We were very pleased to see the leadership in a bipartisan fashion, from pro-life Democrats and pro-woman Republicans, who banded together to say that women deserve better than abortion and that abortion isn’t health care for women and is not good for children, obviously.”

“Abortion undermines women’s reproductive health,” Foster charged, saying that women need maternity coverage but abortion undermines this effort.

Government-offered abortion puts additional pressure on women to have abortion, she said, because it discourages “social remedies” such as securing jobs and support from the baby’s father while also providing clothes, food, transport, and educational accommodations to pregnant women in need.

Government-offered abortion would also help discourage a birthmother from considering adoption over abortion, she suggested.

“It’s a real disservice to women when they don’t have resources to make life-affirming choices.”

Foster said that Planned Parenthood’s attack on the Stupak Amendment was “over the top” and contained “a lot of hyperbole.” She thought it was an effort to rally their supporters to activism and fundraising and also to press President Obama for assistance.

“Women who’ve had an abortion understand that it changes their lives. It’s not about freedom, but about a memory that won’t go away for rest of their life.”

She said that Richards’ accusation that the U.S. bishops and “anti-choice” groups hijacked the health care legislation was “ridiculous.”

“This is not about hijacking anything. The overwhelming majority of Americans and Congressional Members said no to abortion,” Foster told CNA.

Madame DeFarge sees it all with a VERY CLEAR EYE. No log in her eye. If you believe the "Middle Passage" (african slaves on the way from west africa to the new world) was bad, wait till you experience the slavery for all americans mandated by this so-called health reform bill. Live free or die.

Taxpayers are forced (anti-choice) to hand over 1 million dollars per day to PP. The ONLY thing PP cares about is $$$ - NOT women. Defund the prenatal hitmen.

"hijacked health care"? Sheesh the chanting choicist cultists are the most obedient little mindless sheeple! Whatever alarmist slogan the abortion industry defenders feed them is swallowed and ranted with such devotion no questions asked. Abortion is not health care - let alone essential health care. And having to behave responsibly (at the very least not fatally abusing innocent babies for the sake of 'free sex') is not exactly a crisis worthy of such alarmism. And hey if the choicer citizens really were a majority why would they even have to try to force pro-life citizens to pay their prenatal hitmen, eh?

It's bad enough that I know about women having 5-6 abortions before 30 years of age- being forced to pay for it would really make me sick. Sorry about missing a big money-maker planned parenthood (NOT)!

I applaud the courage displayed by Pelosi and the House to do the right thing despite incurring the anger of their base. For those of us who value life, we need to support the Health Care reform to ensure that mothers who chose life over death are able to provide health care for their precious ones. All children must be given the chance to thrive even AFTER birth!

Plan Parenthood you need to accept defeat. You have killed more than 50 million babies since abortion had been legalized & you made a lot of money of it. Enough is enough. Abortion is killing a culture & the worse is, it's killing a country. Stop abortion!!Long live U.S.A

Has anyone here actually read the Stupak amendment? To quote part of it: SEC. 265. LIMITATION ON ABORTION FUNDING (a) In General.—No funds authorized or appropriated by this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) may be used to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion, except in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, or unless the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest. (b) Option to Purchase Separate Supplemental Coverage or Plan [etc….] Notice the “except” loophole. Abortion in cases of rape or incest is not justified under Catholic doctrine nor is euthanasia, “sex education” (i.e., promiscuity education), contraception advocacy, etc., which the health care bill still covers.

Isn't it interesting that the majority of Catholic Bishops can't get up the nerve to refuse Communion to pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians, but they can get all worked up about abortion when it becomes part of a socialistic health care bill? Obviously they want to support this rotten bill wholeheartedly but know they can't unless abortion coverage is removed. That's why they got up the kahunas to press the politicians and voters. A Socialist America is their dream come true.

I wish Cecile Richards and other pro aborts would explain to me how on Earth abortion can be considered as health care. The pro aborts don't care about women but they do like the revenue that abortion generates. But please, could they give a rational explanation for labeling abortion as health care.

As I have stated before, we must fight abortion with one heart in Christ and one issue at a time. Now, we are getting close to win this little-one battle. We can't mix the stem cell research and contraception issues with the abortion and expect to win. We can't bring the name of God into the courtroom. We must not "use" God as our weapon to fight abortion and evil. The final victory always belongs to our Almighty God and we are His instruments but not the vice versa. Beyond the reasonable of doubt, it can be proven that abortion is a premediate act of murder of the voiceless defenseless innocent babies. The most civilized country on earth, The United States should ban abortion before they think to abolish the death penalty.

Abortion is the big con. The big lie. Women's health risks increase after abortion, both mental and physical. Everybody - and I mean EVERYBODY - picks up the tab not just in financial cost but at humanity's cost, too. Here in the UK, abortion is out of control and so is the moral fibre of society. The sooner the world wakes up to this hard reality, the better!

You are spot on, DLL. + Praise be Jesus Christ + Yes, the anti-Christ are those who defy God and force others to do the same. Planned Parenthood and all those propagating pro-choice and pro-abortion are Agents of the anti-Christ, Lucifer. Life is a Gift from God and no one, No Government on earth, has a right to regislate and endorse financial funding from American taxes for annihilation billions of our first neighbours. Abortion is what it is - MURDER MOST FOUL. The Catholic Bishops have highjacked the Bill? Oh, no. God stood up and said NO to destruction of His Creation, that which He creates in His own Image. He is the Author of Life and decrees that life be protected from the first moment of conception to the time He decides to call back His soul unto Himself through natural death. Pray for us all you faithfull American Catholics and people of goodwill that a similar Bill here in Kenya being pushed and financed by International Planned Parenthood due to be debated in our Parliament during the session which opened to-day, 10th November, does not see the light of day

Abortion is not healthcare, it does not save lives or promote health but does the exact opposite. Funding of abortion should not even be a consideration since abortion is not health care.

Nobody's hijacked anything! Planned parenthood thinks THEIR opinion is the only opinion, and forgets that the right to our opinions and beliefs are what this country was founded on. This is so silly. All they have to do is offer a rider to the policy that individuals could pay for if they wanted/agreed with those options. You see that with vision, and many other areas of helath care currently.

The devil hates any form of defeat. The devil is in the works that promote abortion. Who is the devil? Who is the anti-christ? It is those who willfully defy God and encourage others to do the same.It is those who are willingly disobedient to God especially one who calls themselves Catholic but teach others to defy the Churches teaching on Abortion. Abortion is a lie as it has nothing to do with the promotion of any woman's health. Abortion is a tragedy never a blessing. I have never heard a woman say to another "Oh wonderful you had an abortion and when? You must be so very happy! I'll have to send Planned Parenthood a lovely letter to congratulate them on their wonderful work. I can't wait for them to do one of their most wonderful abortions on me if I have an unwanted pregnancy". There are no have a lovely abortion cards that Hallmark or any other card makers make. Planned parenthood doesn't get it! Americans don't want to be a party to legalized murder and that is what abortion is! Americans don't want to pay for elective abortions. Morality is important teaching. The devil was a murderer from the beginning of time!

Planned Parenthood has to decide, is this a "health care bill" or a "death bill?" If the solution to all of the heath care issues are "kill them all", then we no longer need doctors or medical research. Seeing that Catholics started hospitals in this country, may be we should defer to the experts!

Yea right, I guess Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats must of told liberals like NARAL, Planned Parenthood and the feminists to decry the Stupak amendment so it will look good so people might actually believe that it has a chance to be in the final bill, which of course it won't. As a Catholic and as an American, I pray that this whole socialized "healthcare bill" fails.

As a Pro-Choice (the choice being whether to have sex, not whether to abort) I am pleasantly surprised by the support of the life issue. If we can't protect the little of our brothers and sisters, nothing else matters. If we would all think about someone else more than ourselves this world would be so much more peaceful.
