The Shrine of Knock

.- Despite Archbishop Mike Neary's recent warning that alleged apparitions at the Shrine of Knock risk “misleading God's people and undermining the faith,” crowds of people swarmed the shrine on Saturday Oct. 31. Close to 10,000 people from all over Ireland came to the shrine in hopes of seeing an apparition of Mary which was predicted by self-proclaimed visionary Joe Coleman.

Pat Lavelle, manager of the Shrine of Knock, explained how the situation unfolded in a phone interview with CNA on Friday.

“Our basilica was left in a terrible state after.  Chairs turned upside-down; food, drinks spilled. The basilica was closed for three days.  Every one of the 5,000 chairs in the basilica had to be lifted in order to clean the floor and [be] put back into position.”

According to Lavelle, the clairvoyant Joe Coleman had predicted that Our Lady would appear inside the basilica at 3 p.m. that afternoon. The basilica has seating for 5,000, however, Lavelle said that he and private security allowed 7,000 inside. “I was afraid, actually, that if we stopped at 5,000 the other 5,000 would charge the building,” said Lavelle.

At around 2 p.m., Joe Coleman walked into the basilica and prayed a Rosary, and then prayed in front of the altar. Minutes passed and nothing happened.

As time worn on, the crowd became restless and began to trickle outside. “I was viewing [the crowd] from our sound room which looks down into the basilica, because I was concerned about safety,” Lavelle told CNA. “The atmosphere was like a social occasion. People were talking, people were on the phone, taking photographs. There was no sense of dignity in the building at all. There was just a sense of anticipation, people were waiting for something to happen.”

At 3:30, a loud bang from outside sent the people indoors into a frenzy, all stampeding to get out. Lavelle revealed that the private security guards found someone had let off a small firecracker on the grounds outside.

Shortly after this, the “visionary,” Joe Coleman, left the building and ran in the direction of the museum. Lavelle told of how Coleman was being mobbed by the crowd and how people were falling on the ground in efforts to reach him. “It was very dangerous,” continued Lavelle, who explained how his security guards had to lead Coleman to safety.

Coleman has since claimed that Mary appeared to him privately that afternoon and he has predicted that another apparition of Our Lady will take place on Dec. 5.

When asked by CNA if the Shrine of Knock will prevent Coleman from returning, Lavelle said that they will not intentionally close the basilica on that day, as people are welcome whenever the shrine is open. However, “as the manager of the shrine I am concerned about safety,” he said. “Joe Coleman can make his predictions and stand away from it. If something happens to someone here, he's ultimately not responsible.” The shrine manager added that discussions have taken place among the staff about ensuring that stricter safety measures are taken on Dec. 5.

Although the spectacle created by Coleman's predictions has been largely negative, Lavelle revealed that he has had a flood of very positive responses from the “real supporters of Knock.” Letters and calls have come in from people who have been “disgusted” and “distraught” at how the basilica  was left.

“People who come to Knock are not looking for signs,” said Lavelle, who concluded, “Our Lady is here everyday. She responds to everyone who comes here quietly and gives people a lot of hope as she did in 1879.”

scituate Mass 11/17/2009 06:47 PM EST
If you want to encounter Jesus Christ directly body, blood, soul and divinity than go to Mass every Sunday or every day,as he is at your local Catholic Church in the Holy Eucharist. Going to Church regularly is the greatest sense of your faith pilgrimage. No one ever needs to go any further than their own Parish and that is the miracle of the Eucharist. At confession,is a direct encounter with Christ and oneself. Christ is not in a shadow somewhere,he is alive and found in any edifice that can be called The Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church! God has truly blessed us all! May the Holy Spirit be with you all!

I can assure Dan Merklin that Knock Shrine does more than its level best to discourage disrespectful behaviour within its domain. It is true that irreverence has become the trademark of Catholic Churches and shrines, having witnessed this myself at Lourdes last year and as a regular Mass-goer. Respect for God's House should begin with ourselves setting a good example. I'd be guessing that the lack of manners and reverence before, during and after Mass is discouraging people from returning to practise the Faith. Ironically, those who are mostly responsible for this lack of manners and reverence of late are the old folk. Strange but true. I remember one young man, so angry at the noise in the church before Mass began that he actually walked up to a loud group of older women in the congregation and told them to shut up because he could not hear himself think never mind pray before mass started. I silently applauded his guts and zeal. A firm hand is needed not only at Knock Shrine but at all churches. Respect is long overdue.

I feel extremely sorry and upset for Pat Lavelle, the people who look after Knock Shrine and the locals. What happened at this sacred place 130 years ago is holy and unique amongst all the recognised Marian shrines in the world. We NEED to urgently catch ourselves on and ask this question: Are these 'appearances' really from heaven? From my research into the story of Knock and experience of being a pilgrim there, Our Lady offers peace, comfort and tranquility to pilgrims, a place to be tranquil. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the primary focus of the shrine whereas, recently, people have been left hurt and distraught at the way the Basilica has been treated - and left - by the 'curious', which means that God's House has been disrespected. It does not add up! The sooner peace is restored to Knock, the better. If anyone is to turn up at the next 'spectacle', the real test is to come armed with Holy Water and throw it in the direction of the alleged 'vision', just as Saint Bernadette did at Lourdes - then we'll see if the phenomenon is from heaven...or not.

Further to my previous mail. It seems that Keith Henderson is also a false prophet that works closely with Mr Coleman: Reported October 11th 2009 Message Keith Henderson received from Our Lady at Knock on October 11th 2009, “I want to thank all my children for coming to Knock today especially those who come with an open heart. I want all my children to convert back to my church. There is only one religion and that is my religion...” Firstly, Mary does not have a church or a religion other than a false one if she does. In addition, she is called Queen of Heaven, not 'heavens.' as claimed by Henderson in a vision. These are false messages, from a false Mary to false seers.

This whole thing is a sad state of affairs. Having checked some sources, I am concerned that Mr Coleman is a false visionary that functions as a pyschic. Until Mr Coleman and his alleged visions have been discerned as legitimate by competent authorities, people would be wise to heed Archbishop Neary. Mary does not have the power, right, or authority to close the gates of heaven as threatened in anger through Coleman, and this alone should alert people to false prophets and their messages. If they really want to know the mind of God, then they should read their bible.

Such disgusting behavior! I guess my questions are: Is food and drink normally banned inside the Shrine? Is a reverent atmosphere encouraged? Are there signs discouraging cell phones use? Irreverence has become the trademark of too many Catholic Churches and Shrines. I don't know the answers, but I do know that I don't like what I see in far too many instances.

I think they should close the basilica every time this nimrod makes a prediction. Lock it tight. The shrine is house of prayer not a social hall, if our Lady is to appear to anyone she can do that any place anytime! Amen!
