Spanish rock band invited to perform at World Youth Day slams Pope Benedict
Related articles:
.- In an interview with a popular music website in Chile, the Christian rock band from Argentina, Rescate, which boasts of being “the only Hispanic artists that will participate in the closing concert for the XX World Youth Day,” criticized Pope Benedict XVI, who will be the central figure at the celebrations in Cologne, Germany. The 8-member rock band told the Chilean website “Musica123” that the group seeks “to spread the message of Jesus in a language that is understandable to every person.” “To me the Pope’s strength is more political than spiritual,” said vocalist and band leader Ulises Eyherabide. “This Pope, who is so orthodox, so rigid and not very ecumenical in eyes of some, could turn out to be a surprise because of how he might be forced to change due to political situations from which he cannot escape.” “Replacing John Paul II obviously has more of a political than a spiritual significance,” he added. Asked about their own religious identity, the band members said, “We are followers of Christ beyond any specific identity. You can define yourself as a Catholic and be…I don’t know… Today we have a Pope who in theory represents the entire Church. Nevertheless, there are those who say this is not the case. Therefore, why divide Jesus even more when in reality He came for all of mankind? Religion is responsible for creating these differences.” Not only will Rescate represent the majority Catholic Spanish-speaking peoples of the world at the closing concert for World Youth Day on August 21, the band’s song “Quitamancha” will be included on the official WYD CD entitled “Building One World,” which will remind young people for years to come of the largest Catholic event in the world, with Pope Benedict XVI being the central figure in attendance. Doug Archer, co-founder of the Catholic music website CatholicMusicNetwork.com (Reddemusicacatolica.com), said he knew little about the Argentinean band. “In any case, I am aware of many excellent artists from the Spanish-speaking world who are very well-known and completely Catholic, and who could have a great impact at World Youth Day.” Subscriber comments:

Rescate from Argentina is not a catholic band. It came from the evangelistical north american kind churches and are against the Ecumenic way. Why our Pope doesn't invite to Daniel Poli, or other catholic muscicians? In Brazil we have a lot of catholic bands in a lot of generes.

Hello everyone...
I agree with the comments that this group should be uninvited to World Youth Day, if they haven't already been. Catholicism is under attack on many fronts. We hardly need to invite dissenters to entertain us at our own events! There are so many who would nibble away at who and what we are, and what we believe. Let this group fade into obsurity, like all those before them, who have not loved the church, and our Holy Father. Peace... Kathleen

I'm glad Rescate were un-invited to WYD. I agree with those who question why they were invited in the first place. Most Catholic youth are rather ignorant of the faith; why not make WYD a time when they could discover who _they_ are as Catholics and who the Church is for what _it_ is? Why water things down by promoting what can only be a least-common denominator unity with other denominations -- or worse yet, with other religions? It seems to me as though the Church has lost a great deal of her own identity, so busy is she in trying to appeal to non-Catholics.

Eyherabide sounds exactly like the neoliberals that then Cardinal Ratzinger wrote about in his book, "Called to Communion."
Eyherabide also seems to have no true opinion of his own. He constantly refers to what others say about the Pope and his role in the Church.

I am not a Roman Catholic. But, if I was invited to teach, speak or work with the Catholic Church I would NOT say or do such insulting things anywhere, no less at the event I was invited to participate in as a guest of the Church.
That is rude, ungracious and arrogant at best. For the sake of your church, get Seven Sorrows, a Roman Catholic group that honors Our Lady and promotes purity and the love for the Blessed Sacrament. Or get John Michael Talbot. Just because he's not a kid, doesn't mean the youth doesn't love him. My teenagers in our church certainly do! They love "rock" music, yes, but they also love the quiet stuff that promotes thought and meditation. Young people aren't always into noise, noise and more noise. They CAN think and meditate too. Just give them a chance. Give them all kinds of music to love God by; such as Gregorian Chant, Seven Sorrows, John Michael Talbot-get in there and help them to become truly Catholic in their hearts and souls. For what it's worth, that's what I think. BT+

The invitation is for the band to "come and see."
"Do not Be Afraid" that they will overshadow or drown out the voice of Christ. This is the biggest gift we could give them: to come and be converted. Don't take that away from them, just as you would not want your opportunity to know Christ taken from you. Read Job and take refuge in the confidence that the Holy Spirit is guiding His church, even when it seems to be against all human logic. If you have attended WYD remember the awe that always ensues the community at such an event... whether they receive the grace being showered down upon them is an act of humility and conversion that only they can make. They will not prevail against the Church. Do not make room for Satan to distract you from making a genuine prayer for mercy, "ask and you shall receive" for the public conversion of Rescate... be not afraid.

Be not afraid. The members of this band are simply misguided -- like, I might add, so many younger (and older) Catholics who will be attending WYD in Cologne. This is God's territory -- let him weed the grain from the chaff. In the meantime, I don't see Pope Benedict taking any s#$t either. Relax -- Christ will protect his church from the enemy as he always has. Maybe the members of this band will hear the voice that St. Paul heard - "Saul. Saul. Why do you persecute me?".

Yes, Christ did eat with sinners, and we should invite the band members to come to participate in WYD. Release Rescate from their public role. Confine their participation to listening to other bands who proclaim the True Faith. Their erroneous ideas reek of pride. And we know who is the "King of Pride". The lyrics of their songs would promote false ideas. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If you are not with Him, you are against Him. The band Rescate from South America should be rescued and not permitted to perform at World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. The fact that they are not Catholic is not the issue in this case. The issue is that they disagree with the way Pope Benedect VXI is handling his papacy. Pope Benedict XVI is the right man for the right job at the right time in world history. Sitting on the see of Peter, who was the first Pope who got his mandate directly from Jesus Christ, over 2000 years ago. Pope Benedict XVI, is the current sheperd of the world Catholic flock who represents Christ and the Holy Body of Christ through his church the Holy Roman Catholic Church. If the band Rescate cannot accept this Catholic truth, their perfomance at World Youth Day should be cancelled immediately! We need peace and love and not disunity that will cause deep and serious divisions at an event like World Day, which is to bring youth form the four corners of the globe together and rally around this remakably, theolocially, and wise Pontiff in Cologne, Germany.

Pope John Paul II, out of respect for other religions, and to show that all religions teach some good in them,on June 21,2004, kissed the Koran and on February 1, 1986, he allowed a Hindu priestess to mark himself with the sign of the Indian goddess Shiva. I like rock music, but I think for a religious celebration, WYD should focus on the trueness of Catholicism and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Only Catholic bands should have been asked to perform. Young people can be so impressionable and vulnerable - I pray that, if this band is allowed to go ahead and perform (and I sincerely hope not) the young people will hold on to their faith and have the discernment to dismiss their remarks.
