Vatican analyst examines reactions to Cardinal Martini’s statements on condom use

Rome, Italy, Apr 27, 2006 / 12:00 am (CNA).- In an article entitled, the “Day After Carlo Maria Martini”, set for publication in English on Friday, Italian journalist Sandro Magister of “L’Espresso” analyzes the reactions to the controversial statements by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini regarding the morality of condom use.

Magister’s article will include both public statements as well as reactions from inside the Italian Bishops’ Conference to the proposals of the former Archbishop of Milan who, among other things, told “L’Espresso” that life does not begin at the moment of conception; an issue considered “non-negotiable” by the Catholic Church in terms of its defense of human life.

Magister will also include reactions by sociologist and former member of the Socialist Party, Paolo Sorbi, who is now head of the Pro-life movement of the Archdiocese of Milan, and Bishop Dante Lafranconi, who heads up the Italian bishops’ Committee on Family and Life.

Cardinal Martini could NOT BE papabile in this concleve, because of his AGE, though he voted.

The Church is a THEOCRACY not a DEMOCRACY. Works out differently.

The Church has always expressed that She has a sweet yolk. But it is still a yolk. Depending on how you wear it, makes it sweet or not.

Of all the issues in the Catholic church, this is the only one I see differently than church doctrine. How can you tell a poor person from Africa that they should NOT use contraception and risk having another child they can ill afford. I don't think it's ethical or even sensible. I'll be the first to line up behind the church on any issue, but contraception does not destroy life the way war, capitol punishment, artificial insemination, or abortion does. I just think the it is UNREASONABLE, and even unjust, to expect third world nation people to not use the gifts God gave them to prevent pregnany.

Please note that cardinal Martini entered the last conclave as a leading "papabile" and came in second, behind Josef Ratzinger, in the final tally.
If such a man-of-the-cloth cannot express his opinions then the Catholic Church is nothing but a dictatorial religious sect which offends the Lord Jesus greatly.
