Speaking of the tremendous value of the organ as a liturgical instrument, the Pope reminded a group of his native Bavarians today that music and song are “themselves part of the liturgical action,” which makes us more capable, “of transforming the world.” Subscriber comments:

What does Robert Mosby mean when he refers to the "New Rite" and the "Old Rite." I believe these terms are sometimes used by people who do not really know what they mean.

I think the Holy Father's words about the place of music in the center of the liturgy rather as an embellishment to it are exactly on targer. This is particularly true for children who may not yet understand certain aspects of the spoken or read word but can easily absorb the power of the chord organ and the harmonies of singing voices. This builds the cultural underpinning of our faith and I am convinced leads to many religious vocations as children get older.

Has the Pope and the Vatican made any real moves toward modifying the New Rite and bringing in significant elements of the Old Rite?
