Pope Benedict announces next Assembly of Synod of Bishops in 2008 about the Word of God in the Church

Vatican City, Oct 6, 2006 / 12:00 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI has called the 12th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, dedicated to the theme, “The Word of God in the Life and the Mission of the Church,” to be held at the Vatican, October 5th – 26th, 2008.

The announcement was made through a communiqué of the press office of the Holy See, this morning.  

This newly announced Assembly of the Synod will be convened three years after the last one, which occurred October 2nd- 23d, 2005 on the subject of the Eucharist.

The Synod is group of bishops who have been chosen from different regions of the world and who, according to cannon law, “meet at declared times to foster a closer unity between the Roman Pontiff and the bishops, to offer the Pope with their counsel in safeguarding and increasing faith and morals and in preserving and strengthening ecclesiastical discipline, and to consider questions concerning the Church's activity in the world.”

In a Synod the gathered bishops exchange ideas and share particular experiences with the common objective of seeking pastoral solutions that have universal validity and applications.

The Synod of Bishops became a permanent institution created by Pope Paul VI in 1965 “in response to the desire of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council to keep alive the spirit of collegiality engendered by the conciliar experience.”  However, although it is a permanent institution, the Synod meets and operates only at the invitation of the Pope.

My 'Catholic education' was based on 'jealosy' for what others seemed to have since my First Holy Communion 63 years ago. Through the events of my life, Catholic Mother, Protestant Father, and the search for authenticity and "the Truth" since my childhood, Sacramental Marriage, 13 children, Vatican Two, Marriage Encounter, Igmatius Retreat, etc. I only felt more phony and worried that someone might uncover my true confusion.
Finally, through the grace of the Spirit and a Pastor who believed in us, a Men's and a Women's Bible Sharing group formed in our Parish and has continued for the past 30 years.
Personally, it is a diciplined search through Sacred Scripture that that answered my deepest longings. I believe I now have what I was jealous of as a child....the knowledge of Who Jesus Is. I truly wonder how anyone can know Him unless they know Him through His Word. I wonder how anyone can know Who it is they receive in the Eucahrist.
Even when I "don't feel like it", the discipline of reading and reflecting on daily liturgical readings and Daily Mass on EWTN, puts me back on track to minister where I perceive a need. (At present my husband is at home with advanced Alzheimer's. I am his primary care-giver.) Until I can attend daily Mass, again, with the grace of God, I will turn to Holy Scripture to reveal my life, God's Holy Will, His Love, His forgiveness, his MercyI screamed with great delight when I heard the topic of the next Synod of Bishops. Maybe the Pope , if not before ,Oct.2008 - after two Looong Years- will "finally" -OBEY- "God's" request through The Blessed Virgin Mary - Our Lady at Fatima - that "the Pope , in union - Formally - with "ALL" the Bishop's of the "WORLD" will consecrate "RUSSIA" ( ONLY ) to the Immaculate Heart of Mary." Something which all Pope's - since having known this "specific" request - have IGNORED or changed on their own .

maybe this Synod of Bishops will help to bring salvation and conversion to the whole world.
