U.S. Bishops respond to the 18 Democrats who tried to correct the Pope
![]() Related articles:
.- The 18 Democrats who recently criticized Pope Benedict XVI when he answered questions about Mexico City’s legalization of abortion, both misrepresented the Pope’s remarks and defied freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has issued a statement in response to the allegations of the 18 Democrats who attempted to correct the Pope. A great deal of noise was made about Benedict XVI and a bishop of Mexico City allegedly excommunicating the lawmakers in Mexico City who voted in favor of legalizing abortion. However, no such formal decree of excommunication was ever issued by the Pope or the bishop from Mexico City. “The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision of society.” (United States Catechism for Adults, p. 442) Consequently, every Catholic is obliged to respect human life, from conception until natural death, including lawmakers. Ironically, the suggestion by the U.S. lawmakers that the Church not speak out on the matter, was a violation of the freedom of speech as well as the freedom of religion. “The Catholic Church always will and must speak out against the destruction of innocent unborn children. The right to do so is guaranteed by the Constitution that all legislators are elected to uphold. Speaking and acting against abortion is not a matter of partisan politics. It is a matter of life and death.” The bishops concluded by urging “all Catholics, especially those who hold positions of public responsibility, to educate themselves about the teaching of the Church, and to seek pastoral advice so that they can make informed decisions with consistency and integrity.” Subscriber comments:

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
People who support in any way the mass murdering of children, old and sick people, don't belong to the Holy Church of Christ, which is based on LOVE for God and our neighbors! Personally I don't understand why such people would dare to call themselves any longer Catholics! So not the Holy Father should correct his statements, but all those decadent Godless politicans! God bless all true Christians! With regards, Brother Luke

To Mike McCaffrey in MA -- You're in denial about who opposes the Catholic Church more often than not in Congress. It is the Democrat Party, and it was 18 cultural Catholic Democrats lawmakers who spoke out against the pope. If there were 18 Republicans who spoke out against the pope, the article would have said that, too. Unfortunately, most Democrats are Democrats first, Americans second, and Catholics third. In Illinois, Senator Dick Durbin a cultural catholic and Geogetown grad, was elected to the Senate because he was a Catholic and opposed abortion. Now he votes in favor of abortion, just like cultural Catholics Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, and other leaders in the Democrat Party. Their positions are ammoral, and I'm glad the article outs them for their positions.

I so wish our Bishops here would re-iterate the teachings of the C.C. and remind everyone - that promotion of abortion means automatic communication. Lawmakers - congress & senate need to be shamed in public, for their public enforcement of murder in the womb!

It seems most sad that this story is about "18 Democrats" rather than "18 politicians." Does this mean that God is a Republican? It makes you look partisan and stupid.

I'm glad to see our Bishops finally being forthright about their, and our, right to speak out against abortion and remind all citizens, including legislators, of their obligation to fully live out their faith and adhere to Church teachings on life.

Nice to see the Bishops handle the situation with such finesse and loyalty to the truth. I love the Holy Father. He speaks very clearly and simply, so that anyone reading his words 'gets' his message which is Jesus' message.

Bravo! USCCB
It needed to be said, and you did. Now it's time for All Catholic Voters to correct this problem at the Polling Booths. Time for All Christians to stand-up, and vote in representatives willing to go against 'Political Correctness', and Vote as Christ would want them to vote. PRO-LIFE!!!

It's frigtening that our members of the U.S. House of Representative don't even know what religion they are.
The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. He is infallible regarding faith and morals. Our representatives, as we all are painfully aware, are not. They might be under the delusion of having more power than God, but they needed a wakeup call from the Pope. Either they are Catholic or they are not. It's like being pregnant. Either you are or you are not. There is no gray area. Either you are a heretic or you are not. It's their choice. Does the Pope have the right to speak out against abortion? Is it his duty to speak out against abortion? Of course!!!!!

Being a christian should be the first and foremost important substance of our lives. We are to have the mind of Christ. How can anyone still believe in killing innocent babies and think they are compassionate. Their minds are not equipped to make good judgments on any decision. Get out of the public arena if you are smart enough to make informed decisions using a Christ-like mind. Then and only then you will be prepared to help in society.

It is about time that the bishops exposed the hypocracy of liberal "Catholic" legislators, whose god is power and public adulation. I hope for more of this in the future!

I totally agree with thePopeBenedictXVI.Godcreated the first man&woman and they inturn genarated the entire Humanity. Its only through pregnancy. The death comes in the natures ways as per God's Wishes. But not as per human's ways, as in the case of Abortions Which is now being legalised By certain Law makers in their countries, which against the God's creation world And can be termed as killing or murdering (Abortion).Hence the stand taken by 18catholic Democrats in the US House ofrepresentatives is misleading the Humanrace andare contrary to God's Creations.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the USCCB to take a stand for the Catholic Church and it's teachings but alas, they dropped the ball and did not say what they should have said and put the feet of these politicans to the fire. Another example of why the modernest Church fails.
