Summorum Pontificum
Pope establishes the full return of the Roman Missal from 1962 with new letter
![]() Related articles:
.- Today marks the historic issuance of Pope Benedict’s apostolic letter on the use of the Roman Missal of 1962. The much talked about letter begins with the Pope giving a history of the use of the Roman Missal, and then provides, among other things, an explanation of the purpose of this Motu Proprio. In order for his new letter to be understood correctly, Benedict XVI gives his readers some historical context. Liturgical History Some have argued that since no new norms were given for the use of the old Missal that it was de facto discarded. However, the Pope responded that, “At the time of the introduction of the new Missal, it did not seem necessary to issue specific norms for the possible use of the earlier Missal. Probably it was thought that it would be a matter of a few individual cases which would be resolved, case by case, on the local level.” “Afterwards, however, it soon became apparent that a good number of people remained strongly attached to this usage of the Roman Rite, which had been familiar to them from childhood.” Benedict also mentioned Archbishop Lefebvre, who led a breakaway group from the Church called the Society of St. Pius X. Amongst this group, “fidelity to the old Missal became an external mark of identity; the reasons for the break, which arose over this, however, were at a deeper level.” Pope Benedict then described the turmoil surrounding the reform of Vatican II and the struggle of many of the faithful who wished to preserve the pre-conciliar Missal. “This occurred above all because in many places celebrations were not faithful to the prescriptions of the new Missal, but the latter actually was understood as authorizing or even requiring creativity, which frequently led to deformations of the liturgy which were hard to bear.” On a personal note, the pontiff mentioned his own experience of the Vatican II “period with all its hopes and its confusion.” In addition, he said, “I have seen how arbitrary deformations of the liturgy caused deep pain to individuals totally rooted in the faith of the Church.”
Pope John Paul II’s Reforms Given this painful context, Benedict XVI explained that John Paul II felt obliged to provide guidelines for the use of the 1962 Missal which came in the form of his Motu Proprio Ecclesia Dei (2 July 1988). This document did not give specific instructions for the use of the Missal but only provided general guidelines for Bishops to allow this usage of the Roman Rite. At the time, the Pope primarily wanted to assist the Society of Saint Pius X to recover full unity with the Successor of Peter, and sought to heal a wound experienced ever more painfully. “Unfortunately this reconciliation has not yet come about. Nonetheless, a number of communities have gratefully made use of the possibilities provided by the Motu Proprio.”
Reason for Benedict’s Motu Proprio The main purpose of this Motu Proprio is to “provide precise juridical norms so that the Church can attain fuller unity” and “to free Bishops from constantly having to evaluate anew how they are to respond to various situations.” The full text of the Motu Proprio can be found in our Documents section or by clicking here.

The headline of this story, with its reference to "full return" is a lie. The Pope did no such thing. The "return" still depends on the whims of pastors and bishops, and the latter still have the final say.

I praise the Pope for his courageous stand. This is long overdue and may pave the way for more vocations, better church attendance and more meaningful worship. I can vision this Mass becoming the "in" thing among Catholics. We must pray that the Pope's will is not sabbatoged by Church officials, particularly those in the United States who have their own agendas.

This is a step in the right direction. There was an effort with the new Mass to help the faithful better understand the Sacrifice of the Mass, but it does not seem to have worked. I don't get the sense from watching first communion classes in today's parishes that the children understand the gravity and sublimity of what is going on. May many avail themselves of the traditional form of the Mass so they may have a better clue as to what is going on.

Western civilisation has now been saved. You don't know it yet, but that's what Benedict XVI has done. It will take some years, but the Church has now been saved too. I shall be asking our Bishop in Moscow for one Sunday Mass to be said using the Tridentine Rite.

Those comments above that speak of the Missal of Pius V re edited and promulgated by John XXIII as more holy, obviously are not in communion with our Holy Father Benedict XVI. Read the letter, and the motu proprio. Neither Mass is holier than the other. and neither mass produces a holier church. The failure could be laid at the hands of parents, clergy and religious who did not fight against the secularism of the West by remaining faithful to and forcefully teaching the moral and doctrinal tradition of the Church. A change in the form of the Liturgy is not a magic pill.

I PRAY THAT IN AMERICA WE DON'T MAKE SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY ORDINARY (THE 1970 RITE) AS THE 'EXTRAORDINARY" RITE.
IT WOULD BE A DISOBEDIENCE.

It is wonderful that the Holy Father has brought back the use of this most holy and inspiring missal. But I would like to point out that the novus ordo Mass in equally valid and, if done correctly, is possessing of a beauty and dignity all it's own. The new Mass being valid, has always poured forth the blessings of the saviour with each and every celebration. Do not expect the use of the 1962 missal to restore the Church to the height of it's earthly glory. We still have a lot of work to do for that to happen.
Let us all strive to be of one mind and heart with the Vicar of Christ.

To those of us born in the post vatican 2 era this is a way to connect with the Latin Mass. However, in reading some of the comments I am particularly shocked that some of the writers have such a negative view of today's Mass. Understand this, the Church by accepting Mass said in the vernacular enabled us to understand the Mass, now that we have a clear understing of the Mass, the person in rural Africa or South America can now understand and most importantly participate in the Latin Mass. So hurray to Pope Benedict for doing this, there is now the ability to participate in the Mass in a new and historic way.

I don't think that we should be critical of those who worship in the vernacular or in Latin. It is the MASS either way. We now have the choice that we want. We should not shove our choices on others. I do remember the Latin Mass, but I don't think that I will rush to attend one. I feel that the Mass I attend is a Mass. Just because it is in English doesn't make it less. The ritual cannot be changed.

Speaking from the perspective of a traditional Anglican priest whose parents left communion with Rome subsequent to the Second Vatican Council due to, among other things, liturgical innovation. I praise the Holy Father for this move, and submit that it may be the catalyst for a return to communion by those of us who know we are adrift. Pray for the Pope, and for all who desire to maintain traditional Catholic faith and practice.

What is really the big thing over which mass to have? Really? Are we following and living the gospel the we are called to? Are we by being so demanding and adament about having the Tridentine mass? It seems that so many people have such a problem with Vatican II. I don't. I live in peace and accept what God has planned for the Church. We never should as "what" or "when" because God decides all of that. I simply follow what Jesus asks me to do and not get all wrapped in which mass should be celebrated. St. Luke's gospel has a theme to his style of writing. He presents God's kingdom as big banquet that all are invited to attend. Christ who is the Eucharist is the center of it all. All are called. All peoples of all languages are God's children. No one should judge anybody. That's entirely God's decision. The first will be last and the last be first. The Pharasaic mentality of having things done, with no love is not what God wants, for He said Mary Magdalene's sins were forgiven because she loved great. This is what counts, to go and receive the Lord in communion at mass with love not with criticism and judgmentalness of the Church. What the Church implements, is what the Holy Spirit inspires. Amen

The Lamb is the Light of the City of God:
The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI is reigniting the rite of the Mass traditional in the Church for 2000 years. There will be two Mass Forms of Our Roman Rite, which will include the present Rite. There is a secret within the Tridentine Rite that demonstrates God's promise to save the World. This return to the more ancient Rite is a tremendous sign. Young people have not experienced this, and may at first find it difficult. But the Holy Spirit present in the Mass, will guide their souls to experience the deeper secrets of God.

Thanks be to God and Pope Benedict. The church can now regain her spiritual footing. Regardless of the acceptance or frequency of the Tridentine Mass it will be THAT Mass that represents us as God's Church. The "deformations" and "creativity" that Benedict mentions in the Mass used since Vatican 2 will be history as the pure and faithful celebration of our faith takes hold in the unchanging Latin Mass. It may take time but I am convinced the Latin Mass WILL become the Mass that faithful Catholics, young and old eventually identify with.
