.- Monsignor Paul Lenz has informed CNA that on Thursday, he will submit the Cause for the Canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha to the Vatican. Tomorrow, April 17, is the feast day of the Native American blessed. Bl. Kateri has been accorded the title of the patroness of the environment and ecology and is dear to the hearts of many Native Americans. She was born in upstate New York, near Auriesville. Both of her parents were Native Americans. Her father was a Mohawk chief and her mother an Algonquin, who was raised Catholic. In her lifetime Kateri was frequently afflicted with illness and became partially blind. In order for her to walk, she groped her way around as she walked. She was then named, Tekakwitha which literally means, “One who walks groping for her way.” Bl. Kateri was baptized when she was 20 years old after being catechized by Father de Lambertville S.J. After her baptism, Kateri was considered an outcast by her tribal community. Living on her own, she professed a vow of perpetual virginity. Poor health and the effects of small pox led to her death in 1680 at the age of 24. In 1943 Kateri was declared venerable and then in 1980 she was declared blessed by Pope John Paul II. She is the first Native American to be declared blessed and was the patroness of the 2002 World Youth Day. Subscriber comments:

I live on Lake Tekakwitha and was wondering if you have the prayer book Kateri read everyday?

My husband was cured of an unexplained painful foot. One night, in a dream, He heard Kateri's voice telling him to move his foot, left to right. In the dream, water came out of his foot. His foot was completely healed in the morning.
Our daughter was also cured of anorexia and bulemia when I dreamt of Kateri, telling me, "Now I will help." My story was published in "Lily of the Mohawks, Spring 1995. I have known and loved Kateri since 1945. Our Cenacle has donated a window in our Church to her. I am praying for yet another total Miracle for our daughter. May God hear our prayers through Blessed Kateri. Amen.

My granddaughter's middle name is Kateri, she was born July 14. I've loved Kateri for many years but the last few months I have entrusted to her the recovery of Bp. Pelotte from brain injury, my friend and I have prayed to her and his present condition tells us she is praying for him. Things could have been so much worse.

The best book I've read about Blessed Kateri is also the simplest. "Vignettes" - little scenes from her life told with the greatest sensitivity and insight. Available through the Shrine at Fonda, NY.

Blessed Kateri's feast day, July 14 is my birthday so I have always had a special place for her in my heart. About five years ago I had been on a spiritual retreat to Little Portion Retreat Center in Eureka Springs, Arkansas under the direction of Scott Hahn of Stubenville, Ohio. On my way home I found a poodle puppy I bought and named her Kateri. The date was July 14! I pray for the sainthood of Blessed Kateri. We have waited so very long. Is there an adult book out about her life? The only one I have found is written for children. I'm so happy to find this page.

How wonderful! We are blessed to have a beautiful, large statue
of Bl. Kateri in our church. My Catholic calendars, however, show her feast day as July 14.

328 yrs ago the Lily of the Mohawks died. It is about time this little "saint" is recognized for her sanctity and purity. I hope she will be the patron of young adults.

FINALLY! Thank You, Lord. My granddaughter will be ecstatic. She was just confirmed last Saturday, and took the name of "Kateri". Thank you, Msgr. Lenz and Kateri. God bless you.
