European bishops back proposed EU law on Sunday rest

.- The secretariat of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community has welcomed a proposed EU law that would safeguard Sunday as a day of rest from work.

According to L’Osservatore Romano, the secretariat issued a statement praising the measure proposed by five EU parliamentarians to recognize the value of “Sunday rest as part of the ‘cultural patrimony’ and ‘European social model’.”

“The current economic and financial crisis has made it even more evident that not every aspect of human life can be subject to the laws of the market,” the bishops stressed.

“In fact, consumerism is not a model either for a sustainable economy or for healthy human development.”  Sunday work, they continued, “puts those who work on Sunday into a socially disadvantageous position, affecting everything from family life to their own personal health.”

The proposed measure, which would need 394 votes to pass in the EU parliament, would call on member states and EU institutions to “protect Sunday as the weekly day of rest” in order “to improve the protection of workers’ health and the balancing of work and family life.”

Ok, seriously Mike B. Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus changed that for Christians on the day of His Resurrection. "Behold, I make all things new." Even the Sabbath gets a new day.

I am 100% convinced by the overwhelming Biblical evidence that Saturday the seventh day is God's Holy Sabbath Day ... I will however contend that God is merciful to those who keep sacred "another" day , based on their understandings , However , once you decide to FORCE your beliefs onto others through civil legislation , and ultimately criminal legislation and penalties , that include severe punishment , you will be on the side of the Dragon , you will receive the Mark of the Beast , and you will receive the seven last plagues ... God winks at ignorance , but He does not wink at persecution ..... Read the story of Cain and Abel ... Cain was merely chastised by God for his erroneous worship , but he was condemned after he murdered Cain .... God's true Sabbath does matter , but God is merciful in that regard ... However , God will not tolerate enforcement and persecution towards those that wish to honor the 7th Day Sabbath ... That is "crossing the line" , and no human has any God given right to do that .... None ... " The day will come when those that kill you think they are doing God a favor " John 16:2

The sentiments are not anti- catholic, but one would be foolish after its years of persecution to give it even a step towards having the same authority over our lives. Sunday worhsip is not biblical, but pagan in origin, and for those who keep the biblical seventh day, this law will greatly affect their ability to buy, which is for many done on sunday since they are usually working throughout the weekdays. This claim of tradition is but a pretence, as if that was all it was, it would be merely suggested rather than having the force of law. This infringement of liberty in a very influential country must be curtailed before it deepens and spreads.

This is quite an old item of news, but I didn't get to see it until very recently and noticed that the last comment was dated 8th June 2010. However,my attention is drawn to the fact that the comments made seem to reflect an anti-Catholic sentiment, because the Church upholds Sunday as the Christian Sabbath. I don't intend to justify the Church's stance on this point here, because that will be too lengthy. On the other hand we have had Christianity for over 2000 thousand years and it has been a force that has helped to build up Europe and countries of Western cultures, as well as countries which have been influenced by Christianity. Perhaps, those who are 'against' the Catholic Church could take some time to, really with charity in their hearts, learn more about the Catholic Church. You will see therein what great treasures you are missing out and knowing it well could bring you not only happiness on earth, but assurance for happiness in eternity. Don't let us be prejudiced by centuries of misunderstanding. The Lord loves us and He wants us all to travel safely to port - He has sent us one ship with one captain. Do we still want to grope about in darkness on our own - to each his own way? What will that be saying to the Lord Himself? Jesus has said that the Sabbath is made for man and not man for the Sabbath and that He is the Lord of the Sabbath. May there be love among all of us.

I agree with many of the comments already made. Those who love God obey HIS commandments, not the commandments of men. God, blessed and sanctified the seventh day which is NOT Sunday. We can talk about this Sabbath and that Sabbath, but God has only one Sabbath and that is from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. NO man has the authority to change the day God set aside for a holy purpose. When man tries to dictate WHEN and HOW to worship God that is what prophecy refers to as speaking like a dragon (satan). When man tries to legislate (create laws and enforce)people to worship, particularly that are CONTRARY to the law of God, that is satan's work. I respect that everyone is free to worship how they want to, God gives us free will. We either choose to follow and obey Him or we choose to reject Him. But we are given the freedom to choose whom we will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!

the Word of God calls us to study to show ourselves approved unto God. deceit is what it is because it is usually a distortion of truth. usually the strongest critics of this issue don't even study the Word. yes Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday but He made no declaration blessing and sanctifying the day. the Sabbath is a question of worshiping the true God. do u think satan likes that? so he hits at the Law of God and says it doesn't matter. the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord.not the first day.Bible-believing Christians, the time is very, very near.when state starts legislating the observance of a day of worship, look up for Jesus is near. the true day of rest as stated in the bible is the seventh day. and to the views of the day that is on saturday. And no man should stand agains God and his will. if this pass and we know it will because it has been prophised the world will go into more turmoil and pain.

This has already been predicted in the scriptures would happen. It is a matter of time and you sabbath keepers, know that you will be persecuted for your sabbath beliefs. May God HIMSELF give you the strength to keep your faith at defense. Everything, from Pres. Obama's election to the charisma the world holds for his election as president to the movement in the catholic faith paramounts to the end of time and persecution of the people of the word

There is a main problem in acting like this!Every Church and state working together brought only persecution in history.A day or way of rest is not a problem of the parlament and of votes.Every problem should be solved by its own department. The Church should be able to solve without the parlament the problem of rest without the state, and reverse.USA is the best example of an institution which had its foundation in the separation of church and state. Will this principle dissappear religious freedom will be also lost.we have also the example in Europe in the middle age.Was it really possible to have religious freedom for the most of the time?

Mr. Rob, Catholicism has no Chrsitian heritage for they are not Christian. They set aside the word of God for their own made up traditions and dogmas.

God blessed the 7th day sabbath, sanctified it and rested on it, so enforcing a law on any other day is contrary to the word of God. God never made Sunday holy, it is just like any other day. Remember, we have to obey God rather than man.

The 7th Day sabbath is the only one autorized by God. Sunday is pagan and Vatican mark of the beast. When governments pass religious laws to make the Vatican happy, remember the inquisitions.

Historically, Europe is Catholic. If they seek to preserve their Christian heritage who are you to tell them they may not? In the name of tolerance many who claim to be tolerant and open minded are the most hypocritical and intolerent. So in the face of those who are trying to preserve the traditional day of rest all the previous commenters are saying that they may not choose a day of rest since it may offend someone. According to that idea no one may choose a day of rest (even personally) since it may offend someone. True tolerance states that yes there are differences between people and so long as those differences are not harmful to others and society they are permitted. However, in the name of multiculturism all legitimate diversity is wiped out. Now that is is more than paradoxical- it is contradictory. It is also strange for those who say it is wrong for the majority to decide upon this issue to give the power to the minority to do it. How is that equitable?

There is great danger whenever we by law enforce religious preferences. Sunday or Saturday or Friday rest days are religious preferences, according to ones individual beliefs. To suggest that the state, via majority affirmation can dictate matters of belief will follow down the track that led to state-controlled environments, however well intentioned those desires may be.

If some people of "different faiths" want to stick to their Sabbath then they will get two days of rest. lucky for them.

What about persons of other faiths that have different Sabbaths or days of rest? Won't this put them at an economic disadvantage if they want to rest on their Sabbath and are forced to rest on the Christian Sabbath?
In an age of diversity and multiculturalism, isn't this a bit paradoxical.
