Obama picks Cuban Liberation theologian as U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See
![]() Professor Miguel H. Diaz, PhD
Related articles:
.- In a surprising move, President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday evening that Miguel H. Diaz, Ph.D., a 45 year old lay Liberation theologian born in Havana (Cuba) is his pick to become the United States Ambassador to the Holy See. An associate professor of theology at St. John's University and the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota, Diaz, a strong Obama supporter and father of four, earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla., and his master’s and doctorate in theology from the University of Notre Dame at Notre Dame, Ind. He taught previously at Barry University, Miami Shores, Fla.; St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, Fla.; University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio; and the University of Notre Dame. He also served as the academic dean at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary and is fluent in Italian, Spanish and French. Diaz serves on the board of the Catholic Theological Society of America, is past president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States, and is a past member of the steering committee of the Karl Rahner Society. He is also a theological consultant to the Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics and was appointed to the task force overseeing the review and revisions of the accrediting standards for the Association of Theological Schools. Diaz is author of the book "On Being Human: U.S. Hispanic and Rahnerian Perspectives" (Orbis Books, 2001); Co-Editor of "From the Heart of Our People: Explorations in Catholic Systematic Theology" (Orbis Books, 1999;) and author of numerous articles and book chapters inspired in the Latino and Black liberation theology, such as the forthcoming “The Life-Giving Reality of God from Black, Latin-American, and U.S. Hispanic Theological Perspectives,” “Otherness in Black Catholic and Latino/a Catholic Theologies and the Otherness of God,” and “Outside the Survival of Community there is no Salvation,” in Building Bridges, Doing Justice: Constructing a Latino/a Ecumenical Theology (Orbis Press, 2009.) Diaz is currently working on two future books: "Cuban-American Catholics" (Paulist Press) and “Migrating Across Theological Borders: The Essentials of Theology from U.S. Hispanic Theological Perspectives" (Orbis Books.) His body of work, which includes some controvesial positions on “inclusivity,” has gained him significant praise from the Catholic left, and his nomination was immediately hailed by pro-Obama Catholics such as “Catholics United” and “Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good,” as well as Prof. Douglas Kmiec. Diaz's election seems to be the first return that Catholics who have unconditionally supported Obama's policies and appointments have received for their investment in the ticket. Diaz, in fact, is listed as a member of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, although he explains his relationship with the pro-Obama group founded by Democratic activist Alexia Kelley as “a response to an invitation to become a theological advisor.” In a brief statement, Diaz said that “I wish to be a diplomatic bridge between our nation and the Holy See, and if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I will continue the work of my predecessors and build on 25 years of excellent relations with the Holy See.” Miguel Diaz served in 2008 on the Obama campaign’s Catholic advisory board. Also in 2008, he donated $1,000 to the Obama Victory Fund. Although he claims to be a “defender of life in all of it stages,” Diaz was among 26 Catholic leaders and scholars who signed a statement supporting the nomination of staunch pro abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius as Health and Human Services Secretary. “The College of Saint Benedict is enormously proud that Miguel has been nominated by President Obama for this important post,” said MaryAnn Baenninger, president of the College of Saint Benedict. “Miguel is a highly-respected theologian and scholar, and an excellent teacher. Most importantly, he has a deep commitment to Catholic social justice and to inclusiveness in the Catholic Church. He truly lives a life of faith. He is the ideal candidate for this post.” He and his wife, Dr. Marian K. Diaz, are the founders of "Companions on a Journey" at the College of Saint Benedict, an organization aimed at promoting the involvement of young Catholics in public life and social justice activities.Subscriber comments:

Refresh my memory but "Liberation Theology"is how God is to serve me and not how I am to serve God. Sin is the cause of poverty and capitalism is the root cause of this sin and if this is so than President Obama's "Change is A socialistic world of a secular humanism.{essentially Godless}! God is not served by faith so much, but in a redistribution of wealth. In the end all become poor and the ruling class are the rich ones.

This is very disappointing, yet after reflecting...who are our politicians. In many cases they are our neighbors etc. The leadership we have in many respects is what we deserve. We have allowed immorality to run rampant and not cared about many things until it stares us in the face place then we place the blame on the church etc. when we are responsible because of our mediocrity in so many ways. The church does its best to provide a situation in which we can adore Christ with freedom. How many of us have actually done anything to actively support our faith and morals.
However, the liberals gay and lesbian communities are marching all over the place and coming up with new strategies to implement their agenda's. All the while we Catholics sit at home hoping for the best and allowing many things we know are wrong to continue without doing anything about it. The liberals are so active and we are so re-active, then we ask why the liberals are making so many gains. They are organized and work together and we all sit back and do nothing to protect our religious freedoms, spending our time bickering vs. coming up with solutions to this problem that work. Nothing is pure coincidence, however if we return to placing our Faith and Christ and come up with a plan to return Him to His rightful place that will be a first step. Lets stop placing the blame on our surroundings and focus on ourselves and what we can do to implement change starting with ourselves.

He's been appointed, by Mr. O, has the Vatican responded? From the "credentials" listed in the article, it would not appear (to me) that this person will be accepted by the Holy See. After all, some high profile personalities have been refused (Caroline Kennedy). It is clear that Obama wants to try to embarass the Vatican by constant refusals. This is just a part of Obamas plan to attempt to convince Catholics that being an abortion supporter is just a valid as not supporting abortion. And that being an advocate for killing babies should be acceptable by Americans and Catholics and by appointing a pro-abortion advocate to the Holy See Obama, can put a schizm between Cathoic teachings and beliefs.

Now you have really gone too far, CNA. You no longer have the right to call yourselves a "news agency" - the half-truths and misleading comments you make in this story are mind-boggling. I could cite almost every line in this "story" as either a half-truth or a lie, but here a just a few:
- "Liberation theologian" - what do you mean by that term? What writings of his are, in fact, part of "liberation theology"? Or is it just because he is Latino? Shame on you! - "controversial postions on 'inclusivity' " - meaning what? That he uses the word "catholic" to mean "inclusive"? How dare he! -Your slanderous treatment of Catholics in Alliance and Catholics United shows your contempt and ignorance of Catholic Social Teaching - a proud and unique aspect of our Church magisterial body of doctrine. Please explain to everyone how your rejection of this magisterial doctrine doesn't make you "cafeteria Catholics". I used to be able to rely, at least somewhat, on your reporting for actual "Catholic News" as your name implies. Apparently, I will only be able to count on your "reporting" for your exclusively anti-abortion, anti-social justice, anti-diversity and anti-"anything that doesn't look like the pre-Vatican II church". What a shame that you have lost your mission and your objectivity. Even worse, you are leading readers to believe that you speak for "the Church". Shame on you.

It seems the vast majority of comments here are completely focused on the abortion issue. They seem to be unable to discuss the multitude of issues facing the world today beyond this topic. I do understand the importance of the legality of abortion yet this all or nothing position of most here today is myopic. The man in question is more than qualified to represent the office he is nominatied for. His views on the legality of abortion were not even mentioned in the article. Your singlemindedness will get you nowhere in the political arena. The politics of abortion will not sway enough voters to determine an election. With this type of thinking the Democrats are assured easy reelection in 2010 and 2012.

Over the years I have read Pope John Paul II's and Pope Benedict's warnings about Liberation Theology. If Prof. Diaz is somehow still stressing this in his teaching then he would not be line with what Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict are teaching. I do not know what the truth is about Prof. Diaz on this issue. Also, I would like to hear how Prof. Diaz reconciles giving money to President Obama's campaign when the stance of the United States Bishops and the Catholic Church's teachings on the primacy of the issue of protecting life at all stages and opposing abortion are in direct opposition to President Obama's campaign promises and actions he has taken so far in not advancing the protection of the lives of pre-born human beings. I'm struggling to discern what basis the Catholic News Service has for calling the nominee for US Ambassador to the Vatican, Miguel Diaz, a liberation theologian. Nothing in this article elaborates on that question, except to point out that he his a Latino and has written widely about Hispanics and the Catholic Church. Where is the evidence for this claim? Without any, I must conclude that this is a racist assertion based on the fact that he is Latino and the assumption that this means he identifies more with liberation theology (which has had more influence in the Latin world).
As far as I can tell, Miguel Diaz is a serious theologian who will be able to communicate on a unique level with the Vatican. From other articles I have read, it's clear he is pro-life, his support for Kathleen Sibelius notwithstanding (because she has no jurisdiction on abortion policy). Finally, he has lived out the Catholic ideal in his life. What more could we expect from the ambassador to the Vatican? Finally, any assertion that Pres. Obama or anyone else is pro-death reveals utter stupidity on the part of the poster making that claim.

His appointments of Daschle and then Sebelius - dissident Catholics -to carry out his extreme pro-abortion policies at HHS,, Biden- another dissenting catholic for VP- his speaking at Georgetown (with the name Jesus covered at his request) , his pro-abortion candidates for Ambassador to the Holy See- now a dissenting Marxist "liberation theologian" who supports all the other pro-abortion cafeteria Catholics out there,, his recieving of the honorary doctorate from ND despite so many Bishops saying it wrong to. If the Vatican accepts this nomination, Catholics will be further confused, as they were by Notre Dame's invitation to Obama. If the Church does not draw a clear line on pro-life issues, Obama will be further emboldened to push his radical abortion policies. Perhaps CNA can elaborate on their choice of the words "Democratic militant" when describing Alexia Kelley. I get the impression that this "news" organization has a slight bias against the "liberal" Catholic social teachings. I also like the sentence that starts, "Although he claims to be a 'defernder of life...' Diaz.... [supported] the nomination of staunch pro abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius." The CNA is so classy!

This is disgraceful!!! This is another quiet under the radar attack on the Church and slap in her face by this arrogant president. Just as at ND last week Obama seeks to divide and confuse catholics. Obama is basically saying to the Holy See - "To heck with you. We don't care what you think about who we appoint to the Holy See."

Another slap in our Catholic faces with this nomination. A pro-choice "former Catholic" of Hispanic descent as an ambassador to the Vatican proves Obama's lack of sensitivity and respect for the Roman Catholic faith. We must continue our efforts in praying as this is the only way this nation and its people are going to change.

Liberation theologian? Please check your sources. As a former student of Professor Diaz, I think it's important to point out that he is a Trinitarian theologian, not a liberation theologian.

Yeah. Another pro-abortion Catholic representing the true Catholics. Whatever.
