Oscar winners take swipes at Proposition 8

.- Same-sex “marriage” and homosexual rights advocacy played a part in the Academy Awards when the movie “Milk,” about the murdered San Francisco homosexual politician Harvey Milk, took two Oscars. Actor Sean Penn, who won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Milk, said supporters of California’s Proposition 8 should reflect upon their “great shame” while Lance Black, the film’s writer, claimed that churches, the government, and families had diminished young homosexuals. Last November, the success of Proposition 8 generated protests from Hollywood after the ballot measure overturned the California Supreme Court’s decision imposing same-sex “marriage” on the state. Upon receiving his Oscar, Penn commented on some Christians who lined the street in protest of the acceptance of homosexuality near the Kodak Theater, where the Academy Awards ceremony was held. "For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think it's a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame and their shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that support," Penn said. "We've got to have equal rights for everyone." Black, after receiving the Oscar for Best Writing in a Screenplay written Directly for the Screen, commented: "If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he would want me to say to all the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than [sic] by the churches, by the government, by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value, and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours." Gary Stein, a writer with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, was critical of Penn’s actions, saying he was “pompously and hypocritically ripping into protesters who were lining the streets near the Oscar show.” “In his speech, Penn tried to shame these people, belittle them, and basically shame anybody who might have supported Proposition 8, which passed in California.” Stein argued that Penn’s own past involvement in activist protests made his comments hypocritical. “Stick to acting, Sean. The hypocrisy in personal politics is showing. And it's not pretty.” Subscriber comments:

People shouting "hate" and "homophobia". Predictable. Those aren't arguments. Where (specifically) is the Church teaching hate? The Catechism? An encyclical perhaps?
Is it hate when society tells a man that he cannot marry his daughter or his dog? Why do presume hate when it comes to so calledgay marriage? The arguments against gay marriage are quite rational and draw from from sources such as natural law, logic, anthropology, and religion. There is no hate involved. How about arguing against what the church actually teaches. Or is it easier to blindly shout "hate"? Start with the argument from natural law. Where is the "hate" in this teaching? I'm not asking for you to agree but I am asking for clarity in your accusations.

You Christian hippocrates! The Bible is up to the reader's and presenter's interpretation and teaching of it's contents. Things have changed in the last couple thousand years. Get with it! I'm so tired of people saying that homosexuality is a choice. Get off your friggin' religious high horse and pray for your ignorance instead.

You religious, holier than thou bigots make me sick. You say you have friends that are gay and you love them. You and bigoted, hateful, discriminating liars. There were some slave owners who had slaves and said they loved them yet they were still slaves. In the Civil Rights Era people said they had friends who were black and they loved but they still agreed with segregation. You are no different. Take a long, hard look in your dark hearts and admit the truth and the truth is you are bigoted haters who can's stand others to be happy and live their lives as they want. I wonder what God will think of you at your judgement day. He knows what is in your heart even if you are unwilling to acknowledge it. You are a shameful scourge to humanity.

For christians you don't know a thing about love. You are bigots who don't know anything about civil rights if it hit you in the face. You voted for bigotry and you won' t face up to who and what you are. God made gays and loves them just as much as you straights! Wake up and quite your hating and begin a real life as loving christians...

I like Sean Penn as an actor, but not as an activist. I sure wish the entertainment industry would act in a professional and respectful manner, not engaging in controversial moral issues. I don't think that I will ever be able to enjoy a Sean Penn picture again, unfortunately.

Sean Penn, it's a shame you just wasted your talent. Homosexuals are human of course BUT they can live a better life by being chaste and decent. This way they can contribute positively to a healthy society. They didn't choose to be like that since birth but they can decide to make the right choice and the right way of life. Think hard of what to say in public and be careful.

Kudos to Jason for your thoughtful comment &
BRAVO Sean Penn for your well-deserved Oscar! Homophobia is a sin, so I say to my fellow Catholics, Christians, Jews Muslims, Hindus and non-believers who have nothing better to do than spew forth hateful diatribes against gay folks, I say ENOUGH already! Think before you speak, as you too may have a gay parent, spouse, sibling, child, relative or friends. Contrary to what you may believe, being gay is NOT a "life-style" choice. Who would ever in their right mind "choose" a life where one if forced to face of life of discrimination and hatred by their own faith community? Civil rights=Equal Rights. +Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

The Catholic Church should be ashamed for teaching the bigotry that lead to the murder of Harvey Milk. There is no difference between the Catholic Church teaching hatred and justifying discrimination against gays and lesbians and the hatred taught by Islamic extremist - its just a matter of degrees.

Jason, a person is free to love or not love anyone. But, love is a verb - an ACTION. Love is what we DO, not what we feel. I mean, it's nice and all if romantic love is in your relationship, but more important is commitment to each other and a set of mutual ideas and principles. Don't act like you don't have the same God-given free will that the rest of us have to choose what is wrong and right. I'm sorry you are suffering - I hope your burden is lightened. God bless.

It's fascinating to see how the Hollywood liberal elite scream for democracy, free speech, etc. However, once the electorate speak and vote and the vote doesn't go their way then the electorate is ignorant, etc. This is why in the end they, and their ilk, have always been left to appeal to activist judges and courts to engage them in acting as a superlegislature and overturn the will of the people. Too many people today have completely confused the notion of being "free" with "license" to do whatever they want, whenever they want---that philosophy is a myth it doesn't exist, because in fact if it did exist civilization could not exist.
Lastly, as an aside to Jason in CA you are in error. Whom you choose tolove is in fact a choice. Being physically attracted to someone is NOT love; that is actually lust, an emotion or feeling. Being in love is an affirmative act of the will. Feelings come and go; if one decides to be in love they, by force of intellect and will stick to that choice in good times and bad. The fact that so many act out of feelings is why divorce rates are so high; no one will remain infatuated constantly with another. Hence, this is why though I may not always "like" someone I can, and must, (as Christ commanded), love my neighbor. Discrimination is wrong, but affirming our neighbors in their objective sin is not love; it is worse than discrimination---it is utter indifference.

Mr. Sean Penn and your followers, if you see your male dog having sex another male dogs, your male cat having sex with your male cat, your cox having sex with another cox, a male animal at the zoo having sex with another male animal and so on and you consider that to be normal, I will take my hat off for you. Given that none of the animals know anything about politics or religion, but they know the truth. Broke-Back-Mountain is wrong and Proposition 8 is right. Marriage is a prestigious privilege between a man and a woman. Don’t try to rob us. Please find your own things.

Fight Back!
Boycott all of these performers, none of whom are "stars"! They are overpaid, only because we the gullible public pay the exhorbitant price of admission to view their movies! A good movie is not worth more the two dollars ($2) at the most!!! The actors and directors and producers are all so poor at their jobs that it takes six (6) months or more to produce a movie of less that two (2) hours. Concerts are another stupid rip-off of youth. Two hundred dollars ($200) or more to witness lip-sinking and ear-drum damaging sound? BOYCOTT ALL OF THESE EXTRAVAGANZAS IN THESE ECONOMICALLY TRYING TIMES!!! Show the crap so-called entertainers what they are truly worth and what we thing of them! Stop purchasing the garbage type tabloids and magazines that hype this degrading life-style! DO IT NOW!!! Pass this on! IT COSTS NOTHING TO DO!

I think Sean Penn has a point. Look at the Broke Back Mountain, which also earned Oscar awards. It is fair to say the Holywood is trying to distort the true meaning of sexual activities. Very soon, actors will win Oscars by protraiting the preverts having sex with children and animals. They want to tell you that these are normal. Good job, Sean, but no thanks for your role model.

The real shame comes from Sean Penn's failure to recognize the Eternal Truth and his soon to be entirely insignificant promotion of grave sin in our land. True love is the light of the Truth shining forth from ones heart in both word and deed; it is not working to indoctrinate the youth into a lifestyle of mortal sin via homosexuality. I pray for you Sean to see the love of Jesus and all that he teaches- consider reading the Theology of the Body from Pope John Paul II. He is a true hero for us to follow, not Mr. Milk.

Marriage is not a right that can be created by the state for any two groups---it is Biblical and between a man and women, period. If the state sinks so low as to change the God given definition of marriage so be it, but it is not a marriage but rather a state created civil union only--which would be a fair compromise but one the radicals in the gay community and their shills will not support since their goal in essence is the destruction of 'marriage' itself. No civilization has ever had a state sanction 'marriage' between two men or two women, and for good reason. Similar to the killing of pre-born children it leads to the destruction of civil society and its institutions. Although the carving out of a new 'right' here will not result in the direct death of 50 million it nonetheless will be a leathal blow to marriage and the family as we know it today.
